| Problem with my PS2
Hey has anyone else ever had this problem? When I use my PS2 as a DVD player it doesn't play past chapter/track/scene (whatever you call it) 18 of the DVD. Instead, as it should transition from track to track it pauses, then the screen goes black and the message "error: unable to read DVD" comes up. It has done this on all the DVDs I've used to test it. I think my system is still under warranty, but I thought I would check to make sure this isn't a common problem with PS2's that can be easily fixed. Oh, and I did buy the DVD remote just in case that's somehow involved. Thanks!

I had a seperate DVD player before the PS2 and a DVD-rom in my computer, so I probably will not come across that.

It sounds like a problem with the system, not the remote or DVD. have you tryed another movie?

Seeing as how slip said something, let me add my 3 cents... I was fine with Atari/Nintendo early on. The Atari never evolved into anything as big as what we have with the other companies. NES was cool...D-pad and "A" & "B". SNES added an "X" & "Y" plus "L" & "R" to the mix. Then Nintendo went to hell by making the controller so bulky, you didn't know whether to use the joystick or D-pad. Sega saw this and went from D-pad and A-B-C to the huge thing it was. Sony came out with Playstation. The controller slightly similar to the SNES, but two L buttons and two R buttons and was nicely compact. That did not change to the PS2 either. But the analog buttons you say...are in the middle and not in the way, do not (and in some cases ARE NOT) used in some games. PS came with both the regular (without analog and vib) and the standard PS2-like controller. X-Box followed the same route as N-64 and Dreamcast by making another bulky controller. As far as Gamecube or X-box...I think you need a special hook up or addon to play DVDs...and Gamecube has mini-discs so DVD play would not be permissible. If this is his only source of DVD entertainment (from the PS2) then I suggest he try to exchange it as Double T suggested.

Yeah...and why switch in a PS2 for an Xbox when you have to pay an extra 30 dollars to play DVDs?

PS2s have this problem all the time. They wont play certain DVDs at all, and sometimes they have your problem. Sometimes they wont play certain games. The problem-Your lens is most likely dirty. Depending on how long you've had the system, and saying you want to keep that system, it is time to do some open heart surgery. ONLY TRY THIS IF YOU KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING! 1. Open up the PS2. Find the lens. DO NOT TOUCH. 2. Get a q-tip and get a very small amount of rubbing alcohol on it. Clean the lens with this. be very careful. 3.Put PS2 back together. See if DVD works. You could also try a cleaning CD, but that didnt work for my friend. PS2s have some strange problem with dust. They seem to collect it and store it more than the others, and it hinders the proper operation of the lens. my GC hasnt had that problem at all, probably because it has a fan that brings air in and one that brings it out. Anyway, Nintendo did screw up with the N64, but they have done better with GC. They could do better if they put more online games in, but the controller is very comfortable and they do have some very good games. And with Sony saying they will be using a "cell" processor or whatever they call it, programmers arent sure how they will program to it. I suppose time will tell.

In all seriousness though, both PS2s and XBOXes DVD players are...well, pieces of crap and will most likely freeze, skip, or not play some DVDs> I own both systems and got so fed up I went and bought a cheap 60 buck DVD player. I suggest the same for you.

I have noticed on some DVD packages (namely WWE videos) that they have a little sticker that says "Playstation2 compatible". A lot of your Hollywood movies don't have that and which is probably the problem he's got.
