| More xp help
Ok after 6 system reinstalls i keep getting a message saying windows has to shut down. It counts down from a 1 min and switches itself off!!! I have no idea whats wrong with it. If a system reinstall isn't getting rid of this what could it be? Is my win xp copy (well actually its on a recovery disk) just messed up? A virus seems unlikely although iam on the internet when it works i don't think this is the problem. Last edited by Skye; 10-07-2004 at 12:49 PM. |

Never seen that before. Have you tried emailing Microsoft?

It's some sort of Virus worm. Microsoft has an update out for it. I don't know where to find it though.

I know that but in theory every old file shouldn't be used. with the reinstall the registry is new and all the startup settings so i'm not sure why/how the worm kept reappearing.

in order to possibly cure this, a format of the entire hard drive would be needed. I recommend it only in an extreme case.

| What you need to do is start the system in Safe Mode (press F8 before startup splash screen) and run an up to date virus program. You have some type of a worm, this happened to me before and I believe Norton Antivirus got rid of it. If you are unsuccessful with the virus scan, you need to format your hard drive. I suggest you start the computer up in safe mode with network support and transfer any important documents. Next follow these simple steps.... 1. Make sure your bios is set to boot Cd's. 2. Insert the Windows XP cd into your CD rom drive. 3. Just before the Xp splash screen your system will prompt you to press a key to boot from a CD. Hit whatever key you system tells you to. The most common keys are the spacebar and return key. 4. The XP cd will load and you will have to follow some steps. 5. When the system prompts you about your hard drive format select NTFS Full Format (or similar). DO NOT SELECT LEAVE CURRENT FILE SYSTEM ALONE. 6. Continue with the step by step instruction. 7. Enjoy your fresh copy of XP. |
