do the albums have to be ones that were released this year?
Winning $700 at the CD store let me buy alot of older CDs that I didn't have.
Anyways, of the ones that I bought...
Smile Empty Soul
Green Day - American Idiot
Finger Eleven
Relient K - mmhmm
Queens of the Stone Age - Lullabies to Paralyize
30 Seconds to Mars - A Beautiful Lie

With some money left over and a birthday present gift card for the store I plan on buying:
Offspring Greatest Hits
Seether - Karma and Effect
Foo Fighters - In Your Honor

The only album I've gotten that was released this year was SOAD's Mesmerize and it was definitely worth it. I probably won't buy another new release until 311's Don't Tread on Me is released 8/16.

1. Avenged Sevenfold - City of Evil
2. Dream Evil - The Book of Heavy Metal
3. Soilwork - Stabbing the Drama
4. 3 Inches of Blood - Advance and Vanquish
5. Damageplan - New Found Power

I will eventually get the new albums by Judas Priest, Devildriver, and The Agony Scene.

ONLY 5 I bought this year...

Diary of Alicia Keyes
U2 - Disassemble Bomb
Brittany Spears - Greatest Hits
Gipsy Kings - Roots
Brian Wilson - Smile

All of them have one or two songs I like and the rest of the disc is garbage filler.

I understand Pink Floyd is re-grouping for the G8 concert. I'mm buy that CD in a heartbeat.

You're kidding, you've heard of 3 Inches of Blood? That band is rediculously rare. (I cant seem to find CD's in store). I love their one song "Ride Darkhorse Ride". They're a pretty good band.

I'm seeing the new System of a Down album in a lot of lists, and I gotta agree. Mesmerize is a really good album, stands out, and provides a lot of variety. System of a Down is a terrific band, they seem to put out a great album after album.

Yeah, I totally agree, and I am so psyched I get to see them live with Mars Volta, which is one of my favorite bands. I can't belive not many people are including Frances the Mute on any lists. The whole story behind the album is really good.

Does anybody have a date on when SOAD's Hypnotize will be released?

I na few months. I'm glad SOAD came back from the atrocious Steal This Album goofy vibe, and put out an album worthy of their self titled.

I finally got it yesterday. I really like it. Haven't listened to the softer side too much yet but I will at some point.

I found Francis the Mute to be highly overrated. In no way does it compare to Deloused. Maybe its just me, but it seems that the album lacks the power and emotion that was captured with Deloused. It seems much more contrived.

If you want to hear a truly exceptional album, go out and buy This Station is Non-opperational by At The Drive In. Both Sparta and the Mars Volta pale in comparison to their original form, At the Drive In.

----------

I have bought only 4 CD's so far this year and they are all female R&B. Only one is recent.

1.) Destiny's Child-The Writing's on the Wall: I bought this album simply because I bought "Say my name" as a ringtone on my Hiptop2, so I had to buy the album and I love every song on it.
2.) Amerie-Touch: This album is surprisingly good. Most of the songs I like. I got it originally just for the hot single "1 Thing." Too bad it has sold horribly. She seems never to get too much attention. I'm surprised her single blew up as much as it did. But it went away as fast as it appeared.
3.) Ciara-Goodies: I bought this for "Oh." After three hot singles I couldn't resist anymore and had to buy it. Though I only like a couple of songs on the CD, it is pretty descent. Very predictable.
4.) Lauryn Hill-The Miss Education of Lauryn Hill: I had this CD years ago but lost it and wanted to hear some of its old singles badly! She is a very talented artist, but the CD didn't really connect me back to how much I liked it before. Only the old singles that I new and another song or two on there I actually liked. The others are blah.

They both fall short of the EP. I own all the three and the EP is the only one I listen to on a weekly basis. If you bootleg at all, try and find some live mars volta shows. That is when they really shine. Albums, especially the new one, dont do them justice.

And yes, At the Drive-is were far better than Sparta or the Mars Volta will ever be.

I wrote this for another board...my top 15

Rank. Band- Album Title, Label, Release Date
1. Andrew Bird- Andrew Bird & the Mysterious Production of Eggs, Righteous Babe, February 8
Talk about out of nowhere. Andrew Bird has toiled around in obscurity for years but even his biggest fans could not have foreseen the unbelievable quality of this album. The human body should not be able to produce sounds this beautiful.
Best Song: Nervous Tic Motion Of The Head To The Left
2. Sufjan Stevens- Illinois, Asthmatic Kitty, July 5(pre-release was leaked back in March)
Sufjan Stevens is set to make it into my top 20 albums of the year list for the third year in a row(Seven Swans was 12 last year, Michigan 8 in 2003). If not for the absolute jaw dropping quality of the Mysterious Production of Eggs this would be a runaway winner. Phenomenal.
Best Song: Come On! Feel the Illinoise!
3. The Decemberists- Picaresque, Kill Rock Stars, March 22
The Decemberists also are a recurring theme in my top album lists with Castaways and Cutouts appearing in my list in 2003. The Decemberists nailed probably their biggest issue with consistency in Picaresque. Every song on the album is simply fantastic including 3 of my top 10 for the year.
Best Song: The Mariner's Revenge Song
4. Architecture in Helsinki- In Case We Die, Bar None, April 12
The best way to describe Architecture in Helsinki is two parts Fiery Furnaces and one part Arcade Fire. Now if that's not a winning combination I don't know what is.
Best Song: Maybe You Can Owe Me
5. The Boy Least Likely To, The Best Party Ever, Import Only
Soft, fuzzy, and sickeningly cute are three words that can describe this album. The Boy Least Likely To walk a very dangerous line brilliantly. One of the biggest surprises of the year...now if only the damn album would come out stateside.
Best Song: Paper Cuts
6. The Silver Mt. Zion Memorial Orchestra & Tra-La-La Band- Horses In The Sky, Constellation, March 22
Sure there's only six songs on the album but the shortest one clocks in at 6:38. This album certainly is not for everyone, it's an acquired taste that just gets better with every go around. God Bless Our Dead Marines is one of the best songs I've heard this year, which isn't going to be a rare feat in this list considering this is, after all, the best of the best so far...but you won't find many songs 11:44 in length getting that compliment. Just an absolutely amazing song.
Best Song: God Bless Our Dead Marines
7. The Fiery Furnaces- EP, Sanctuary, January 11
This isn't right. The brilliantly(sarcasm) named EP from The Fiery Furnaces is like any other EP out there. Re-issues of older songs and scraps that were cut from previous albums...but EP may actually be better than their phenomenal Blueberry Boat album which made my top 10 list last year.
Best Song: Here Comes The Summer
8. Of Montreal- Sunlandic Twins, Polyvinyl, April 12
The reception for Sunlandic Twins is a vastly varying one. Some call it a disgrace to the band while others call it their best work, there seems to be very little in terms of a middle ground. Personally I absolutely love it, some of their best work to date is found in it.
Best Song: Oslo In The Summertime
9. Caribou- The Milk Of Human Kindness, Domino, May 3
One of those albums that will either be loved by it's listeners or hated with almost no middle grounds. Caribou, formerly known as Manitoba, offer up some of the weirdest, unique, and strangely compelling songs of the year with The Milk Of Human Kindness. Just don't expect much in the form of vocals as the bulk of it is instrumental.
Best Song: Pelican Narrows
10. Bright Eyes- I’m Wide Awake, It’s Morning, Saddle Creek, January 25
On January 25th the then 24 year-old Conor Oberst released two albums simultaneously, the slow, country-esque I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning and the electric Digital Ash In A Digital Urn. Both are fantastic albums, I'm Wide Awake being more so, and both are so completely different. I'm Wide Awake is the more refined of the two and is stronger throughout.
Best Song: Road To Joy
11. Bonnie "Prince" Billy & Matt Sweeney- Superwolf, Drag City, January 25
Will Oldham’s best work since the classic 1999 “ See a Darkness.” The best collaborated effort I’ve heard in quite a while.
Best Song: My Home Is The Sea
12. Sleater-Kinney- The Woods, Sub Pop, May 24
Punk’s leading ladies best work in years is also their first album released on a label other than Kill Rock Stars for the first time since 1995.
Best Song: Let’s Call It Love
13. Stephen Malkmus- Face The Truth, Matador, May 24
Face The Truth represents Malkmus’s best work since his departure from the legendary Pavement. While not up to Slanted & Enchanted levels of greatness Face The Truth is one hell of a record.
Best Song: Pencil Rot
14. Nic Armstrong & The Thieves- The Greatest White Liar, New West, March 8
One of those albums that just comes out of nowhere to really surprise you. This is purebred unadultered rock and roll.
Best Song: Broken Neck Blues
15. Beck- Guero, Geffen, March 29
To put it simply this is Beck’s best work since Odelay IMO.
Best Song: E-Pro

I'm a huge fan of post-rock, and ASMZ are one of my favorite bands in the genre but come on...this album falls so far short of other stuff they have released. It's not a bad record by any means, its just disapointing..to me anyway, and not top 5 or 10 material.
