| | | Favorite Meteorologists Watching the news for years I have my favorite meteorologists. Some are attractive even.
Note:This is not meant to get racy, beyond PG-13 If it's not a national network, please remember to include television market.
As for favorites I've always enjoyed watching in the Philly market Dave Roberts, John Bolaris, and Glenn Hurricane Schwartz with that funky bow-tie.
The last few years in Philly they have kicked it up quite a notch and hired female meteorologists. It's funny how a bunch of them get pregnant and still do the weather. My favorite in Philly is Cicely Tynan. She works for WPVI ABC 6 which has one of the sharpest, cleanest images in the city so she's always prim and proper. What a blonde. It's funny that when she does the exclusive weather forecast on the jumboscreen at the LINC during the EAGLES games, she showing bare shoulders is her pushing the envelope at that station it seems.

| | | I should point out that most of the on-camera news weather people are actually not meteorologists, they are rather news reporters with degrees in broadcast journalism; they may have minored in meteorology, but as far as I know, they haven't had the in-depth scientific and mathematical background or the sufficient forecasting training that actual meteorology majors do get. There might be a very rare instance that the on-camera weather person may have had a degree in meteorology, but there are very few of those.
And I don't have a favorite on-camera weather person, since I don't really watch the weather on the local news.

| | Up here in Michigan, that is the exception for the most part. Since we tend to get it all (rain, snow, hail, tornadoes, wind, heat, cold, etc... they say here in MI if you don't like the weather, wait 5 minutes), our TV (and in some cases radio) meteorologists actually have degrees in meteorology, and those who have what Jimmy's got don't necessarily get the meteorologist title.
My personal favorites are:
George Lessens - WZZM 13 (he went to Penn State, does have a science background)
Linda Paige - WZZM 13 (Penn State, Air Force Meteorologist, even helping with one of the first Northeastern NEXRAD radar sites)
Peter Chan - WXMI Fox 17 (University of Wisconsin - Madison, plus he worked for the NWS - I remember listening to him on weather radio and I met him on a tour of the Grand Rapids office)
Tom Skilling - WGN (UofW - Madison, he can go over viewer's heads easily)
John McMurray - WJRT 12 Flint (NY State Maritime College, US Air Force)
Kevin Goff - WJRT 12 Flint (Texas A&M/Western Michigan)
JR Kirtek - WJRT 12 Flint (University of Michigan - didn't know they even had any sort of program til now) |

He really seems to know his stuff and generally seems to love his job. He just comes off very friendly and likeable. He would be my favorite.

| | | Broadcast meteorologist I believe tend to get more of a rudamentary training compared to an actual degree in meteorology. A primary degree in meteorology requires courses like differential equations, atmospheric thermodynamics, synoptic meteorology, and fluid mechanics, and gets trained on all the scientific and technical terms and lingo that almost no one outside the department ever hears about.

| | | I've heard about Penn State Meteorology. At my school TCNJ I knew a girl who transferred into our English Secondary from PSU Meterorology.
I don't think Jillian Barberie from LA's Fox Good Day knows anything except how to dress.

Penn State has a very fine meteorology department, one of the best in the nation; our department works with their department in some of the research. Other great schools in meteorology/atmospheric sciences are University of Oklahoma, Florida State, and University of Colorado.
I guess there are quite a few more on-camera news personnel with meterology degrees than I originally thought. They all still have some kind of communications/broadcasting degrees (primary or secondary). Some probably choose to double-major in both.
And yes a lot of incoming meteorology majors do tend to switch away from meteorology midway into the program....it's the extensive loads of mathematics involved that scares them away, but that's the nature of the weather.

She is a bit too ditzy, especially when a giant hurricane is about to hit someplace and she is extremely happy when it hits. Definition- dumb blonde from the valley.
My personal favorite would have to be Paul Delegado for FOX 13 in Tampa. Does a great job as well. |
