Coaster Draft 2007- Signup - All slots are full!

Ok, it's that time of year again. Time for the signup for this year's Coaster Draft.

I'll be looking for at least 3 new members, possibly more. This is an invitation to last year's Coaster Draft members who finished the Draft. If you were eliminated for any reason from the Draft, you are not eligible to sign up. I'll will give members of last year's Draft first choice of entering. Monday January 29th is the deadline for last year's members to sign up. Then it will be open enrollment until there are 20 members.

Everyone is free to sign up right now. Any new members will be entered into the Coaster Draft once the January 29th deadline hits.

If there are any questions, you can e-mail me at coasterlove@tmail.com.

Make sure to put "Coaster Draft" somewhere in the subject heading since I get a lot of junk mail.

Also, I have decided I will not be the head of running the Coaster Draft and have been in talks with possible replacements to take over with me offering help and assistance time to time.

^You get a real sense of what coasters people like or think are popular. I'd say this is run similar to the NFL draft.

It's going to be quite hard for me to improve from last year, but I'll give it another shot again this year.

And by the way, Andrew Polcyn and I are both in talks with coasterlove about sharing the coordinating responsibilities with him and moderating the draft. With 20 players in the game, it is going to take more than one person to take charge. Last year, I helped out coasterlove as kind of an informal assistant coordinator to him, and even that barely got us through the draft last year. So now Andrew and I will both moderate the draft and coasterlove will also assist us in coordinating the draft.

I would like to return to the draft as a full participant. Last year my rookie experience was as an alternate.

I was shocked looking back to see the 2006 draft and it appears that your draft order goes on a format of 1,2,3,4,5-1,2,3,4,5. That draft order gives a HUMONGOUS advantage to those at the top of the draft order. In all fairness, please revise your format to a draft order of 1,2,3,4,5-5,4,3,2,1.

This is the method, (called Fantasy Draft Format), I used on my Mitch Hawker Draft here and worked very well.

Not to mention it drastically effected the results of last years poll,

Position in Draft Order/Final Ranking
(Where the people with the first 3 picks ranked)
1st/4th
2nd/3rd
3rd/1st

(and your bottom 3...)
18th/20th
19th/13th
20th/15th

Usually you only want to use your 2006 format when you want to handicap the people at the bottom of the draft, such as the NFL Draft where they place the Super Bowl winner at the bottom.

I think our current numbering format is already fine the way it is. If we keep reversing the order, it is going to make it more confusing for us as coordinators as well as some (if not most) of the players, especially since everyone is very much used to our current system. And really, no one has had problems or objections to it. This is just my stand on it. I'll certainly talk to coasterlove and Andrew about it and see if they might consider reversing; but if they agree with me, then we'll keep it the way it is.

The draft order has always been determined by the Super Bowl predictions; the rankings are in the order starting with the player with the most accurate prediction and working downward. coasterlove will explain more about this soon. And even before the draft starts, players can always try to negotiate trades with other players to swap draft picks to move up in the rankings, while giving back more in the later rounds; we've had players do this before and it is perfectly legal as long as both sides agree on the trade.

If anyone else has any other suggestions/concerns, feel free to post them here for consideration.

The draft order is fine the way it is IMO.

You get higher number draft order by picking the Super Bowl winner and scores correctly (or whoever is cloests and on and on).

It would be way too confusing to do it the other way.

Plus this is just for fun guys. It's not like we're getting paid or anything.

I was using "guys" in the plural form, such as "hey you guys" calling a group of people, not just males.

Like here, not only does trading make the game more complicated, it makes no sense. For example, say Person A wants to trade the last pick in the 1st round to Person B, for the first pick in the 2nd round.

Round 1
19. Person C
20. Person A

Round 2
1. Person B
2.....

"Oh Boy!" Person A says excitingly as he gains the first pick in the 2nd round, when in reality, all he did was trade his 20th draft pick, for the 21st draft pick. This is why it doesn't make sense to swap draft picks to be given back at a later round.

The problem is the power always goes the people at the top of the draft list. But reversing the order each round, balances the power out to everyone and leaves the game more based on skill. Where as it is now, 80% of your chance of winning is based on your SuperBowl prediction, and only 20% of your chance of winning is based on the actual game. After the draft order is calculated, you might as well drop the bottom half of it, as they have little to no chance of winning.

i've never been in the draft and it looked like fun. but i'm still not one hundred percent as to what you should do and how the game works.

Yeah sure, we do welcome your thoughts and ideas....thank you for offering us your ideas, and I will talk to the other two about it and see what they think.

And when I meant more confusion, I meant in the sense of timing as well as the order. Most of the players are already accustomed to our current system and are used to waiting a week or so between making picks. Reversing the order every time will throw all that off and vary the time between picks. We've had many missed picks in the past due to some players failing to realize when their next turn is coming up. And here is an example -- a trade done two years ago between coasterlove and myself, which happens to be still the biggest trade in the history of the Coaster Draft, even to this day: He had a #9 pick in the first round and I had a #4 (which turned out to be #3 later) We both agreed to pick for each other in the first round and swap those picks. To make up for him securing his choice before mine was secured, he would also trade his 2nd and 3rd round picks for my 3rd and 4th. So as a result, I had two picks in the next round and he had two picks in the 4th, and our 2nd and 3rd round picks were swapped. And in the end, we both still had ten coasters after the draft was done.

So something like that could be worked out between players once the draft order has been determined.

The only suggestion I have for you is to go back and read the Coaster Draft rules and then go through either last year's draft thread or the 2005 Coaster Draft and read through everything. If you have ever seen an NBA Draft or any other pro sports draft live, then you will get the idea of a Coaster Draft. Again, that is the only suggestion I have....if you are still unsure of how the draft works, all you can do then is wait this year out and follow along with us as we proceed. I hope this works though.


And another thing for first-time members, only the coasters from the United States are eligible to select from.

I'm in as usual. I like our current picking order. Gotta be able to pick the super bowl winner is all part of the way this draft works. I guess I will continue to post the picks, but if yall have 2 people moderating the draft, I kinda don't see a point, tho I was on top of things pretty good. lol.

After consulting with Andrew and coasterlove last night, we all unanimously agreed to keep it the way it is, since that is the way we have always done it.

Yeah, we won't be needing you to do that anymore; I know you like to constantly post a new, updated draft board all the time, but as you said there is no point with Andrew and myself moderating the draft.

What I am going to do as far as that goes, is post only one master draft board in a separate thread and then the any one of the mods/admins will peridoically update the board as the draft progresses. That way it is still constanly updated, but only taking up one post all the way.
