2009 Coaster Draft -- General Info, Questions, and Comments thread

The 2009 Coaster Draft begins a week from now on Monday, May 4th at Noon EDT.

In the meantime, have your game plan ready for play. You may continue to negotiate trades with anyone else on the roster if you want to switch spots. All negotiations should be done either on here or privately and not on the official thread. While announcements and confirmations should be posted on the official thread, for now you may post them on this thread until we have the official thread up next week. I will have to rules posted once the draft gets underway.

I will now open this thread up for questions and comments about this year's draft.

I'm looking to take part in this for the first time... How exactly does this work?

Does anyone higher than me want to trade spots?

Pantsfree,

Here is how I view the draft. You can pick any operating (or scheduled to be open) coaster as of 2009. Wooden or steel. After 10 rounds you will have 10 different coasters of your choice. You then pick and theme and market your park to the members of ThrillNetwork. Basically, the best looking or sounding park to the members of the draft and website will win bragging rights going into next year.

We all take turns, just make sure your theme can be flexible in case you can't get the coaster you were looking for.

Hope this helps a little.

Isn't this year the great expansion of the game to Coaster Draft: North America? USA-Canada-Mexico.

Thanks Katie! Do I need to do anything before the draft?

No, I would just think about your theme, if you want to have one and try to plan with that. Like Jimmy's theme last year was a Marvel theme. But, you can really do just about anything.

I've had my theme set since December, I think. I didn't have a theme last year, which is why I finished next to last.

PANTSFREE, I can add you to the alternates list if you like -- that means in the event that one of the players drops out, an alternate takes his/her place, there are a couple of people ahead of you so you can follow along in the meantime as we go.

You can also refer to last year's draft transcript. It kind of works the way pro sports draft work (like an NBA draft) where players take turns picking coasters they want to add to their hypothetical park. You can pick any available (that's not already selected) coaster you'd like, and then players and other TN members vote at the end which player they think has the best coaster collection.

Okay, I'll be good to go on Monday, after getting back from the beach with my new tan.
I actually picked a theme this year for the draft instead of trying to figure it out halfway through or after it was over the 2 previous years. Hopefully it will go well. Good Luck to everyone!

I think I have a great theme. I just hope the coasters that I have planned to pick don't get picked before I get a chance to. If all goes as planned I'm sure I can do a whole lot better than last year.

I don't think I've had a theme to begin the Draft in the past. I created it towards the end. I played like the Philadelphia EAGLES on Draft Day: Pick the best available talent at the moment.

I had thoughts 2-3 months ago. I have to pull that out.

What is it with players all of the sudden needing to have themes now? Oh well, congratulations Andrew, you started a trend (three years ago) and now everyone is doing it.

I'm still working on my "theme" though I don't intentionally go into these things with a specific theme in mind...

Pantsfree, and other inquiring alternate members, need to give me their credit card numbers WITH expiration dates (and the 3 digit number on the back of the card) so I can procure myself a new car to save GM.

I didn't get into a theme per say...but I did market my park as if I were the PR especially with my last years I have more coasters then everyone else (cause I counted one of my racers/duelers as two). hehehe

Wait, so we can only draft coasters in North America? Hmm, may call for a new gameplan.

Yeah, we've decided for this year to expand outside the US and now also include Mexico and Canada....we're going to give it a trial run and see how it goes.

Jimmy, please consider posting an updated roster. I haven't seen myself as an alternate on a list yet.

After watching a few POV's now I generally remember my hit list I made months ago. Ready to go.

I don't have a hit list per se, but I do have my theme in mind and I'm fairly confident I can stick with it. That being said, I do not expect to win the coaster draft anytime soon.

Jimmy, I'd like to be moved to the bottom of the alternates list, please. I've played before, and fared well. I'd like to get some people in that have not yet had the chance to play.

Welcome to the club B-rad. I'm just crossing my fingers as we go along that we tune in when it's time to pick.

Deja Vu Rules is still on the clock. I messaged him anyway by email just in case to remind him. Edit: Deja got it.

Great pick Jimmy. Like nothing else in the US.

Welcome back Coasterlove. The first time around I was a lost newbie alternate thrown in so with a clear head/full season last year now it's a pleasure to play this game with you.

The first coaster chosen from outside the borders of the United States for the Coaster Draft is Behemoth, Canada Wonderland.

I got my Aunt into this...at least as far as I am concerned. She has fallen for the "G.P." trick...but then again, I have her interested in how I conduct my final 9 coasters, and for that matter, she's interested in my selling phase as well!

Maybe I ought to pull some trades, so I can get this thing done soon!
