Son of Beast closed for season

Son of Beast at Kings Island will remain closed for the rest of this season, the park said.

It could even be closed for longer. The ride was shut down in June after a woman claimed she was injured on the ride. The woman said she was injured in late... Click here to read more...

I'm betting the thing is going to finally be written off as a lost cause and be removed.

You could build a seriously nice coaster on its footprint.

"You could build a seriously nice coaster on its footprint."- Wes

Correction- You could build at least two if not even three nice coasters in it's spot. I hope they do remove it and at some point put another great wooden coaster to go along with The Beast. If they use a good design that doesn't use as much space as the massive Son Of Beast, there is no reason they also couldn't fit another coaster in there as well.

Now this is just my wishful thinking and nothing more. I'd love to see Gravity Group build a terrific wooden coaster that leaves enough room for a moderate sized steel coaster, maybe a 125-150ft floorless.

Sounds like a great recycling plan, a nice launch pad for another B&M coaster in the park: NOT Hydra.

Mark it's funny you mentioned floorless, because that is what I was thinking of.

Although the floorless thing really doesn't add anything to the experience in my opinion. It feels the same as the 2 sit downs I've been on.

Of course, it doesn't really add much to the feel of the ride but can enhance the ride for some people, mainly those in the front row. Since it doesn't much more than a traditional looping B&M coaster besides the station and possibly the trains. Although I wouldn't be surprised if the trains were cheaper since they're missing the floor.

^But the station would be more expensive due to the extra mechanics of the floor and gating systems, so the price evens out.

I guess this is what my next NL project will end up being.

As far as I'm concerned, they need to tear out that piece of crap in Rivertown that shares the same name as a truly great coaster.

As trimmed out as it is- that coaster is so finished.

^^ Actually I thought Beast was running great this year, even with the trims on.

Course it could have been a full moon or something, but every one of my 6 rides were great.

That's what I was getting at. I missed putting the word "costs" in my last post. I know the station would be more expensive but I know the extra cost involved is worth it, I think.

if it does get removed, I will never forgive this lady...I can't believe she waited so long to report her injuries. I was reading up on it, and it took her two weeks to actually report any injury.

This is all the information about burst blood vessels. Causes of Broken Blood Vessels

and although I have never seen the trains on SOB I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that it would be fairly hard to suffer a burst blood vessel in the head on this coaster. Maybe it happened on one of the other ones like FoF or Firehawk, where they have OTSR's?

Either way I believe that she is being dumb in trying to get money out of the park, and I really would like to know why Cedar Fair has decided to keep it closed even though it has been cleared.

This will be the fourth time I've missed out on riding this coaster...

Perhaps Phil would like to burn this coaster more than Mean Streak.

So far, nothing was said in her getting money from the park unless i missed something. I have rode SOB with the old and new trains. Its very very painfull. And the ride hasnt seen more then a hr wait on it in along time when it was open. Cedar Fair cant get money from the company who designed the coaster due to a contract thing that stated that the park cant sue. The company who designed it went out of business. And FOF no longer has the OTSR's. They took them out when they changed the name and the trains of the ride years ago. Use to be called Outer Limits Flight Of Fear. The lap bars on FOF keep you in the seats. No way of falling out on the loops.

If it goes away I'm amazed that my last view of it involved a line, an actual line of people waiting to ride it.

^Funny you say that. When I was at Kings Island last year, I remember waiting about 30 minutes for Son of Beast. I was amazed that anyone would wait for that piece of garbage (and yes, that's 30 minutes I'll never get back).

I usually am really against tearing down wooden coasters, but in this case I'll make an exception. This is the worst roller coaster I've ever ridden. It either needs to be torn down, or completely retracked by a reputable company. I would imagine additional bracing is necessary to really fix this ride, which sounds cost prohibitive. Let's face it, this baby's been on life support since they took out the loop and I think they're pulling the plug. Reminds me of Chiller at Great Adventure.

Just because you did some reading on it doesn't make you a doctor on the subject. Who knows what her reasons were?

Again, you're not a doctor. Just because a coaster had OTSR's doesn't mean they're rough or more likely to cause some sort of head trauma. Trust me, I've been on each of those coasters at least twice. Son of Beast jolted my head worse than any coaster I've been on. I rode it with the old trains with the loop and the newer trains after the removal and it sucked both times horribly. Probably the worst ride I've ever been on.

^I read in a recent article (don't ask me where, I can't remember) that she was hospitalized for that amount of time, so she couldn't report her injuries. Just for the record, I only report stuff like this if I am positively sure that I found it from somewhere. (That's my little flame insurance.)

I'm weighing with my two hands: Hercules or Son of Beast, which of the two were worse.

Wes, Katie- I'm glad you guys enjoyed your rides, but I stand by my statement: I've been riding the Beast for 30 years, and that was NOT the Beast.

I'd go with Son of Beast. After Hercules, I just felt bored. Son of Beast beat me up the last time I rode it. Get rid of it, Kings Island. It didn't work. It's OK to pull a Bat with this one too. Live, learn, build something else.

CF seems to be a smarter company when it comes to finances (IMHO) so it wouldn't surprise me if Dick is planning a date to burn the thing to the ground.

It could bring together tons of enthusiasts, even those that lean more towards the other brand such as myself in one big Koom bye yah, however it's spelled. Imagine coaster world peace.

CF also doesnt have every Tom, Dick and Harry trying to sue them everytime someone gets hurt on a ride at the parks they own. And no one looses their heads either. Lol.

Dale,

You said in an earlier post in this news thread that "And FOF no longer has the OTSR's. They took them out when they changed the name and the trains of the ride years ago. Use to be called Outer Limits Flight Of Fear. The lap bars on FOF keep you in the seats."

While I am no expert surrounding the Flight Of Fear at Kings Island, or Flight Of Fear regardless...I do not believe the safety restraint change AND the name change are related in any way besides both affecting the same ride. From my understanding, the restraint change was based on guest complaints, etc...and similar concerns, to whereas the name change was a matter of licensing that was not being renewed. Just wanted to clarify...but that is the way I understand it, but I could also be mistaken.

As for Son Of Beast, in all reality, I would be sad to this one go, if it should go that way...after all, I have never made it up there, and I hate to see Coasters go...but I know that it is a fact of life.

^ Just being there doesn't necessarily mean you can ride it- I've been there twice, wanting to ride it to see if it's really as bad as everyone says. It was either closed for the whole day, or closed every time I was near it.

Besides, even if it's painful, it HAS to be more thrilling than the 5 mph kiddie coaster in Rivertown.
