Head on over to Speedzone and check to see if you placed in the Winner's Circle. Congratulations to everyone who entered this month, the entries were EXTREMELY close.

If you won a prize...
Use the "Contact Us" feature and title it "NL Contest - March ___ Place Winner"
In the e-mail, include your name, address and phone number, and T-shirt size if you're at an overseas location, or if you got 2nd or 3rd place. The subject needs to be that or else it stands the chance of getting lost.

Congratulations to those who won... is it possible that you can release the entire standings so we can know how we did or what to improve on?

NM it probably wouldn't be fair to the people who didn't do so hot. I'm not worried about it.

Yeah I fixed that. I failed the copy and paste test.

If anyone sends joke emails to the prize thing, I would highly suggest NOT doing that as you will not be a happy camper.

And what's so hard about the rubric, I've already said over half of it in various threads, the rest is just logic.

i'm sure a simple email wouldn't ruin anyone's camping experience

i'm only curious to see the rubric because the results surprised me. i was expecting a different ride to show up in the top 3.

i was finally able to put my finger on why its so important to judge all the rides at once side by side: because when you grade them as they come, your ratings will ultimately depend somewhat on the type of mood you are in.

for example, if you just got home from school and you got an 'a' on a math exam , then you will be in a good mood and will subconciously rate easier than normal. on the other hand, if your girl friend just broke up with you, then you will be in a bad mood and subconciously rate lower.
those are extreme examples, but they illustrate my point. when you rate them all at once, your rates will still depend on your mood, but atleast they will all have the same bias so it will be fair.

and no one should make the argument that this isn't true. there is not one person out there who would be able to rate consistently from day to day. its just human nature.

We are encouraged to judge them as they come in because it saves time, and you get the results faster. As for me, I got busy, and I had to judge all of them at once. I wasn't in a altered mood, I just needed to get it done. I judge each coaster by itself, and I don't make any comparrisons to either one. Each coaster deserves to be graded on what it is, not how it compares to others, the numbers do that.

Just so you guys understand what we do in the process. I can't speak for everyone, but I usually judge with a normal mood. I just like to judge each track indipendently, and how it is. Not if it lives up or is better than one another. Thats how I feel it should be.

if your assigning first second and third, shouldn't it be based on 'if it lives up or is better than one another?'

The judges don't assign 1st, 2nd, or 3rd. They just assign scores based on the rubric (they would have their own personal 1st, 2nd, or 3rd). When it comes to assigning 1st, 2nd, or 3rd, that actually comes to me, where I handle the judges scores and get 1st, 2nd, or 3rd from averaging their scores (not by their place as indicated by the judge).

In addition, the rubric is designed to be more objective than anything else. Judges can be in a bad mood even more so when they judge all at once (and more apt to grade more negatively). If they judge as they come in/when they can (basically, at their pleasure), the interference of their mood actually decreases. In fact, they do not grade when they are in a bad mood.

In the next day or two, I'll post the form we use to grade, so you know what criteria is met.

Everytime I ride a coaster, it valleys. I've never been on a stalled coaster or had one roll back (except Wicked Twister and what was Superman: Ultimate Escape, which does that by design).

thanks for the clarification. i wasn't talking so much good mood bad mood though; that was just the example i used. i just wanted to make the point that its impossible for someone to grade consistently from day to day, so if they were all done at once it would be more fair.

i would think it would be much simpler though to have all of the judges just pick their first second third and fourth favorite, giving 4,3,2, and 1 points respectively and then averaging those scores and calling the top 3 the winners. if their is a tie then you would resort to the detailed rubric. this would be much less time consuming, but i'm not the one running this contest so just do it however you like.

btw steven, did you ever get strongbad's dangeresque working? i can email you the nlpack version if you want.

Is there a rule against someone winning twice in a row? I'm not saying that b/c I lost, I'm just saying that out of curiousity.
