September 2005 Unofficial NL Contest

This month's contest is about making a coaster for a small park.

In a small amusement park somewhere far, far away, an area is reserved for the construction of a moderate sized custom layout roller coaster. You are challenged to make one for the park, that follows the requirements below:
  • Track must be steel, you can choose any track type
  • Vertical G's between -1.5 and +5
  • Lateral G's between -2 and 2
  • Exactly one station
  • Exactly one lift, no launch
  • Height must stay below 100 ft = 30,48 m
  • Length must stay below 3.500 ft = 1066,80 m
  • Minimum 2 trains
  • Minimum total capacity 32 riders, there is no requirement to the capacity in riders per hour.
  • Must pass E-stop
  • No terrain is allowed
  • Trees are allowed, but will not be judged
  • 3ds are allowed, but will not be judged and the ride should work without them
The park will judge the ride on
  • Building Technique such as G-forces, smoothness, blocking, supports, track shaping.
  • How fun the ride is
  • Original or unique ideas
This is an unofficial contest, there is no prize.
The deadline is September 30, 11:59 Eastern Time (US). Let your creativity flow and make something of it. In the first week of October, we hope to get decided which of the coasters the park will choose, and which are second and third.

Use this thread for questions.

sounds like fun. two questions though.

1. does the capacity have to be the total nember of people on at one time, or just the amount tha could be held at one time?

2. Can other friction wheels be used on brakes and such, as long as it doesnt give a launching expirience?

I am not sure what the difference is between the two options you give, but by capacity, i mean te nr. or trains x the nr. of cars per train x the nr. of seats per car. So, for example, two five car trains on a looping coaster willl do, because 2 x 5 x 4 is more then 32. Two four car trains are allowed too, 2 x 4 x 4 is exactly 32.

Yes, if you want/need friction wheels, you can use them, as long as you don't use them for launching.

Oh, and the coaster must pass E-stop. I added that to the first post.

TDMAMBA, the given height is the maximum height in the editor, that is the maximum y value of the top part of the track. You may not go above there.

But thank yóú all, because since I am a beginner in this sutff, I sometimes forget things, so I will add rules as important questions are asked. I have added a terrain and 3ds rule.

What if terrain is used where the Y value is 113 feet tall. But I have the terrain level set at 15 feet above normal making the lift only 93 feet tall above ground?

I have added a rule saying no terrain is allowed.

And in the picture you can see how height is measured (height is the y value).

No terrain? Well crap!

I usually use a little terrain where the station is on a hill or something. I guess i'll use the uber-boring plain flat map :P

Oh geez I just nearly finished the track, then I looked at the rules: "Track must be steel, you can choose any track type" I was building a woodie! Lol, I'll have to do something else.

You say that no terrain is allowed but I just wanted to ask if trees are allowed and just not terraforming or nothing at all. Thanks.

Trees are fine. I have added it to the first post. They won't increase your score however.

Um, not in this No Limits contest. I believe there is a RCT series contest going until December or something like that.

Umm.

It's a NO LIMITS CONTEST!

Not RCT3!

I regret to say I will not be entering this contest as planned. I'm using a computer incapable of running NL while my iBook is being repaired. (the hard drive failed)

This contest ends today, so if you have an entry, upload it today or you will be too late.

September 2005 results
I did only get four entries. If yours isn't in the list below, please say so in this thread! Here a description of each entry, in random order:

Decade Force by Coasterdude28
This was a nice coaster, which was meant to be a miniature version of Millennium Force. This resulted in a caoster starting with hills, then an overbanked curve and then a more twisting second half, ending off with again a pair of hills and a heavily banked curve. The good points of the coaster were the hills and its supports, as well as the overbanks and it's supports. However, in the twisting section, the curves weren't heartlined and there wasn'ta smooth transition between right-hand and left-hand curves. This is causing very high laterals (up to 2.3), officially violating the G-force rule and moreover making the coaster unsafe. Unfortunately for coasterdude28, this is not the coaster the park will take.

Haloween by TimberWolfe
Haloween is a very creative and unique Intamin Hyper launched shuttle coaster. Very imaginative coaster, riding it backwards is also very cool. However, there are long parts of unsupported track, making the structure of the coaster very weak. Secondly, the coaster is more than twice the height limit and therefore, neither this coaster is suitable for the park.

Titan by Worm
The name of this coaster says it all: this coaster is huge. Good pacing and the trackwork (smoothness) was above average. The supports of this coaster are made out of prefabricated supports, making the supports quite weak for track parts high off the ground. The lift hill supports are a work of art, however low at the ground, this looks very strange. Also they possibly won't hold the track which is 100 m off the ground at the top. The latter is making it over three times the height limit, and therefore way too expensive for the park to be built.

Scorpion by JordanMullins
Scorpion is a compact Schwarzkopf-style coaster with a twisting layout. It features two interlocking loops, of which one is inclined. This makes the layout very interesting, and the coaster very thrilling. Smoothness is very good, but there is no heartlining on most of the track. Supports of this coaster consist of lots of thin tubes. Some of the supports can be too weak to handle the forces, but they add to the excitement. There are some very close calls, of which some are too close, causing the danger of collision. It is a few feet (about 5) above the height limit, however of the four entries, this would be the most suitable coaster for the park.

The park was happy with the enthousiasm of the four contestants to design the perfect coaster, but unfortunately only has place and money for one. Since all four coaster were officially violating the rules, the choice was hard. The park has eventually chosen for Scorpion.
