Ok....everyone. Lets put together a list of defunct dark rides/walk throughs. I'm curious if any of the big amusement park chains (six flags, cedar fair, etc) used to have dark rides at their parks that have been removed. <BR>I'll start with two that I am aware of: <BR> <BR>1. Lagoon Amusement park - (Utah) <BR> "Haunted Shack" - this was a walk through attraction that was also like a "fun house". It had moving stairs that you would walk up, a spiral slide down to a mirror maze and several "ghoulish" figures. <BR> <BR>2. Saratoga Amusement Park - (Lehi, Utah) <BR> This amusement park is defunct itself. I think it closed in the late 70's. I remember that they had a really cool haunted house ride (pretzel). The outside of it really scared me as a kid and you could hear the "honking" sound 1/2 through the park everytime the ride ended. |

Dorney Park used to have a great collection of Dark rides. There was an Old Mill called Journey to the Center of the Earth, a classic style ride through called the Bucket of Blood based on a pirate theme and a walkthrough called the Gold Mine which had several papier mache type scenes and a really cool spinning tunnel to walk through. They also had a great walkthrough Glass Maze. My cousins and I would have all day ride tickets and once we had figured out the path we would run through it all day long. Though not technically a Dark Ride, Dorney also laid claim to the One-of-a-kind Iceberg which was a cuddle cups ride inside of a building designed to look like an iceberg. It was very cool inside with a great light show and they would play loud rock or techno music while the ride was in motion. Great stuff that you just don't see anymore.

Hersheypark had a few. <BR> <BR>One was The Old Mill (aka Lost River). It was your typical Mill Chute ride (winding water way in the dark followed by a lift hill and then a splash down at the end. Over the course of its life (from the ealy part of the 20th century to 1972) it had many in carnations. The last one was "The Lost River". It was badly damaged in the 1972 flood (hurricane Agnes) and never reopened. It was removed a short time later. <BR> <BR>The other was the "Gold Nugget". It was a western themed dark ride. It closed sometime in the 1970's. The bulding was torn down and the current bumper cars are in its old location. This ride had a life before the "Gold Nugget" as another dark ride, but right now I can't remember the names that it had over the years. <BR> <BR>There were two more in south central PA... <BR> <BR>Fantasy Land (Defunct) in Gettysburg PA had a dark ride called "Winter Wonderland". Being a park for kids, it of course was not scary. It was air conditioned and themed to make it look like winter inside with cute/funny scenes of snowmen, polar bears, etc. I don't remember much of this. <BR> <BR>Park City Mall in Lancaster PA used to have an area on its lower level filled with mainly kiddie rides. However, there was one dark ride... Keystone Kops. You rode in antique type cars and went through this ride. Its purpose was to make you laugh, not scream. This ride was removed (along with the whole ride area) in the 1970's. Another similar ride to this I believe at one time existed at Wildwood NJ. <BR> <BR>_________________ <BR>"Resistance is futile... you will be assimilated." Ponchatrain beach(New Orleans) In addition to a classic 1930's NAD wooden coaster(and square-steel tracked wild mouse), this park had a number of classic rides, such as Laughin' in the Dark, a haunted house ride that took riders through in vehicles, and a space themed fun house, with a mirror maze, slides, and a Giant Spider! It also featured a "The Bug" a tumble bug ride like the turtle at Kennywood. This classic park closed in 1983. <BR> <BR>_________________ <BR>Donate to the Send Me to Six Flags Fund! PKD in Doswell, VA had two when the mountain which hosts Volcano was first put up: <BR> <BR>Land of the Dooz (later Smurfs)- a kiddie ride on a train viewing various scenes about the critters. I don't remember much at all about the Dooz, but this was pre-Paramount, and I've always found it cool that they came up with characters and wrote songs for them to sing on their own. <BR> <BR>The Haunted River (advertised originally as Atlantis- was it ever called that in the park)- A pirates of the caribbean knockoff with a flume on the end, but still great fun. You went through "rooms"- egyptian crypt, shipwrecked pirates, foggy marsh, replete with venom-spitting snakes and huge spiders dropping on your head. <BR> <BR>

Knott's Berry Farm had the awesome Bear-ytales. Now they have the mediocre Kingdom of the Dinosaurs, which IMO, is going out very soon.

SFGAdv used to have a big walk-through haunted house. Unfortunately, some kids went inside after a party (and you know what that means...drinking), and they decided to use a cigarette lighter to light up a dark room. The wall caught on fire and none of the kids made it out alive. Those 4 all died. But, I don't feel sorry for them. It is supposed to be dark! It's a haunted house!!! They were stupid enough to light a little fire inside a confined space, they deserved it! Thank god that no one else was hurt. Today, the Autobahn (bumper cars) resides in it's former spot. |

I think it might still be there but the Myrtle Beach Pavillion has/had a haunted car ride called the Haunted Hotel.

C.P. had three. One was a pirate ride by the Blue Streak, an upside-down house by the aquarium and an earthquake ride where the Pagoda gift shop is.
