Are Top Spins Safe?

Am I the only person who feels unsafe on a ride such as Thunderhawk at Worlds of Fun or any other rumle-tumble top spin rides?

Perfect example :

I was at Lake Compounce 2 years ago in the back row on one of these "death tumblers" as I like to call them after this experience. The ride was over, and over-all I enjoyed, except for the long periods of hanging upside down. But then, me and this group of about five teenage girsl were last to get off. We stood up and the freely rotating seats began to move. They almost did a complete rotation before the ride op went berserk and started slamming on brake buttons. I've seen people afraid before, but the look on these girl's faces were of sheer terror. I actually shouldn't talk, I was probably looking like that too.

I notice now, Lake Compounce has replaced that little mechanism of death with a flyer. I have yet to ride a top-spin, or whatever they're called, since then, although I plan to at Worlds of Fun on the Thunderhawk.

Yes. They are completely unsafe, and should never be ridden.

That's why they are still made.

Absolutely, don't forget the HUSS Enterprises. Cars fly off of those things all of the time and get stuck in trees.

Speaking of cars falling off a ride. Could you imagine if your chair fell off of a wave swinger while it was running? Perhaps CoasterZ could do a picture that depicts an event of that nature.

I've been worried while riding Top Spins. On the Strates Shows version, I had a blast when it was manually controled by the operator. I was hanging upside down for a good few seconds. I was worried my chain was going to fall off and all the blood rushing to my head.
On the Fly Away at SFNE they stopped the ride cycle to check my cage. It would have been nuts if the underbody of it just popped right off. I think the Huss rides are all pretty bad ass looking. They like to push it to the extreme.

Yeah, I really like riding the Top Spin at the traveling Strates shows. Whenever I've ridden them, the ride is manually controlled by the operator and they usually extend the ride longer. I think it's one of the best least-of-a-rip-off-rides at the fair.

Speak of the devil!

There's this small mini park by me called Boomers. It used to be called Bullwinkles until they had an accident involving a wave swinger.

When the people were on it, the support structure that rotates to move the chairs collapsed! I don't know if anyone died but there were injuries. The worst part is, this is like a kiddie place, so most of the people injured were probably really young.

-----------------------------

Maybe I exagerated about the top spins by calling them mechanisms of death and all that. But I was just stating my opinion. I don't feel safe on them.

Wellenflug Pillar Collapse

The Zierer "WaveSwinger" is raised and lowered by four sets of cables connected to a hydrolic ram. There was a carnival company that replaced those cables (for preventitive maintanance) with inferior cables NOT from Zierer, and the tower did collapse, injuring quite a few, only a couple severely though. MOST ride accidents are caused by one of two things: 1. Extremely poor maintanance, or 2. Stupid riders.

Speaking of the Zierer waveswinger I found a good flatride site a while back that shows the exact mechanism that Genezix is talking about.

In one of the pics on the site it even shows the ride operating without the panels on the central column allowing you to see the cable carrier & hydraulic ram...not to mention just how skinny the actual column itself really is,they also describe in great detail how the oscilating motion of the ride works as well.

I have felt unsafe on a Zipper. Every time i ride it! I love that thing. No i really do no feel unsafe on the Zipper. The cages are held on tightly. As long as your door stays closed you are fine.

Lightbulb

I've never been on a zipper. I see them all the time at the carnival that comes to my town, but I never ride it. I'm too busy with the swinging ships. They also have this strange ride called Arabian Knights. It's similar to Da Vinci's Cradle at BGW, only all the seats are facing forwards toward the queue line, instead of staring at eachother.

Ummm, no, it did happen. They changed the name, there were problems, and I know what happens a few miles from my home.

No one flipped, the ride collapsed or something. Don't be such an @sshole.

I never said half the things you claim I did in your post.

I said nothing about filpping or the chairs swining freely.

By the way, you can call me Dynamite_Phase rather than putting my actions in parenthesis.

i love topspins, but i HATE zippers. Zippers can just melt in the fiery pit of Gehena. Yep. Topsins are awesome, I cant wait to see what Riptide can do! and Der Twister at SFFT is my fave. Gotta love that hunk of wood in the middle. and the small stream of liquid blue stuff flowing out of the wholes. Why dont they turn those on? Hmm.
