Standup Gyro Drops

I was wondering, why hasn't any parks been getting any besides SFOG and one in another country? Its been like 4 years since SFOG got one, and I would say its one of the most popular rides.

I agree. I though with the opening of that one there would be a ton of parks building one. i'am kinda shocked there haven't been any more built. Thats ok it's only 3 hours if i want to ride it.

I havent even thought of this. But now that I do, I am surprised that it hasnt been built again also. Maybe they cant have a stand up drop ride over a certain height or something.

i think that its a good solution to parks that can't build over a certain hieght, as a stand-up adds a level of intensity that you can't get from just height. does that makes sense.

anyways, i'm with 73-03, SFOG right around the corner for me haha.

Thats true, but does SFOG have a height limit?

Why haven't other parks installed one of these?

Maybe because they already have some kind of free-fall ride or just not want to?

But Kraxle, you gotta ride this thing.....

The lone fact that you stand, is enough to make it 3 times the terror IMO.

Just for the record, SFOG has no height limit that is set in stone.

Carowinds dosen't have a height limit either. Hopefully they will build a coaster taller than the skytower one day.

The restraints on these things looks OMG painful. I mean, as someone told me, there's a little more than a B&M standup, but a little less than a B&M inverted. So I really don't know what to expect other than OUCH. I seriously have doubts about riding this when I head down to the area opening week... just too intense looking for me. I don't like the idea about being thrust and angled forward so I'm looking straight down... *DIES* But I know I'll go on it. Said I would never ride Delerium at PKI and I did... Do I want to again? Of course! These look way too sick for my taste...

People who complain about the pain are overreacting. They're pretty comfortable if you position yourself correctly.

Yeah there not bad at all, but my only problem with them was getting on and off of them. There so tall I had to jump to get on it.

You missed out a ride - apocalypse now at drayton manor is a stand-up freefall (the first in the world) although not a gyro drop. But at 180ft is taller.

It's actaully a hybrid - 3 stand-up and 2 sit down.

^ Does it tilt? And I thought it was completed shortly after Acro, too?

you got to love pictures of pictures, but like i said, you can get an idea of what the seating is like from the second one.

Yes, and it opened in may 2000. Acro was 2001 wasn't it?

I've been kinda hoping that AstroWorld would add standup cars to their giant drop (not floorless ones, though...that looks kinda painful). Too bad it will never happen

I don't think that will happen! If you had a floor with stand-up restraints, there would have to be a way for the restraint to move up and down to adjust to a rider's height (like the way a stand-up coaster does). The floorless standups don't have to adjust for a rider's height, because there is no reason to (no floor).

I'm not saying it couldn't be done, but it seems unlikey.

I'm waiting for SFGADV to get this or a S&S Combo Tower to either compliment or replace the Generation One Intamin Tower

Yah, if you are under 6 foot, you kinda have to jump into the seats...believe me, I am the worst when it comes to drop rides...I hate them.....and I can stand Acro...you will be fine....

Actually, it has been done. Apocolypse (Drayton Manor) has them. The seats do indeed work like stand-up coaster seats; the slide up and down. The key to riding Apocolypse correctly is to crouch down slightly before the restraints lock; only about three or four inches. That works for pretty much all stand-ups.

The reason more haven't been built is that every park has a drop ride already. There is no need for another one, no matter how awesome it is.

Acrophobia is close to being my favorite ride at the park. It is much more thrilling than any of the coasters are, and it isn't at all painful. Plus the ops there are usually the nicest at the park.

I also noticed that too. Even though it was crowded and had a long line, they still had it in them, which is unlikely for this park.

Yea, I like it when the ride ops will count back from 10 and drop the ride when they are at 5.

That sounds incredibly dumb. Of course, that was the prototype stand-up drop ride, so I guess it dawned on engineers later they could do it a much simpler, better way (like Acro).

Lightbulb height limit, YES

trust me on this SFOG has a height limit because it is right across the river from the Fulton County Airport. No hypercoaster for us

I believe the Drayton Manor one has the loading/unloading underground...can anyone confirm that? I thought I remember reading that when it opened and thought that would be pretty sweet.

I have ridden Acro down at SFOG, and the seats are not uncomfortable at all. I love the ride and thought it was immensely thrilling. The kicker to it is the 15 degree tilt it does. You have a view of the ground rushing at you and it is incredible.
