Skycoaster

I'm thinking about going on a skycoaster. There's one about 45 minutes from my house and it only costs 5 buck a ride. Up until about a month ago i was terrified of rides, but now ive gotten over that sort of. So are these fun or is it gonna scare the pants off me. I've been on skyscrapers and all the big rides at knotts.

The only scary part is being lifted to the top, once you are released its all fun..give it a try.

I have bene on many sky coasters many times. Its a fun ride going up the hold and then when you pull it is the only fun part... Once you feel the cables "pull" you back up its just a big swing....

Wow. Only 5 dollars? I would have to pay over 30$ to ride one which is at Paramount's Kings Dominion. They are a ripping off people big time!

I dont know if it is really a rip-off...but does appear be something of a sham so to speak. While I can't speak from personal first hand knowledge (so please, no one assume that), a close friend of mine is a former site operator for SkyCoaster at Kings Dominion, and according to her the upcharge for the rides is described as for insurance, but it really isnt for that. So in that way, if true, is something of a sham.

But what it boils down plain and simply is supply and demand. If the park going public are willing to pay $50 a person to ride, then that is what the park will charge. By comparison, if the public would only pay $5 or not ride, then that is what the park would be forced to charge as an upcharge.

And the balance thereof. If there are enough customers willing to pay $30 a pop to ride...then that is what the park will charge. I still think for a season pass holder (which I am), I am not paying that much to ride either.

Why they also make you pay is because every sale any sky coaster get... the makers of SkyCoaster gets a part of. The way it works is.... They give the park the skycoaster.... the park has to set it up... but then for every sale it makes SkyCoaster gets part of...

I went on the world's tallest sky coaster in Las Vegas...it was amazing. The scariest bit is dangling at the top...a voice then comes through the microphone "Ready!" and you have to pull the handle to release...absolutely fantastic sensation falling down!

Are you sure that was the world's tallest, because i thought it was the 300ft tall one in Florida that was the world's tallest.

I went on one for my first time in Branson, Misourri a few weeks ago. It was the most scary on the way up and waiting at the top, especially when my cousin didn't give me a warning that we were going to go. The first freefall is pretty freaky too - next spring im goin on the Florida skycoaster (the 300ft tall one at Old Town)

A 500 footer would be crazy. I was on the one at GAdv a few years ago and it was alot of fun. The only thing holding me back from doing it again is the coast. It coasts about $20 at GAdv.

That you are correct my friend, but the one he's talking about in Las Vegas is the Sky Screamer at the MGM Grand Hotel & Resort. It was the tallest prior to the Kissimee Skycoaster. So he probably rode it when it was still the tallest.

Haha that's funny you mention Knott's since the ride that was actually supposed to go into the spot that VertiGo went into (the old Haunted Shack attraction) was supposed to be a Skycoaster. The OC Register came out with an article about the planned Skyscraper ride and how it would be the park's first up-charge thrill-ride and how management at Knott's and Magic Mountain had come to an agreement for Knott's to build the new Skycoaster within the perimeter set by Magic Mountain and SkyFun1 for Dive Devil back in '96. A few months or was it weeks later, Knott's retracted the announcement informing that the deal struck between Magic Mountain and them had fallen apart and that the plans for the Skycoaster attraction would be canceled and another attraction would be considered in location. Not a lot of people know about this, I'm pretty sure a few locals do though.

I've been on the skycoaster at CP, and I thought it was a blast, and well worth the $20 I think I paid. I think you definately have to try it at least once, and you're not gonna beat $5.

I rode the one @ SFA when I got a discount coupon type of thing, it was fun, not at all tall, but the weightlessness going down was insane. Took my breath away really.

I rode the one @ PKD a little while later in the year and was FAR more intimidated, it was way taller so going up was pretty crazy.

I sadly chickened out of going on the 300 foot monster @ Old Town in Florida. I keep telling myself next time I go down there I'm going to get on it. But then I'll actually see it and I'm way too freaked out... The only ride that scares me at this point.

I did a tandem @ SFStl. IDK how high it is but its up there. It was something like 45 bucks and well worth it. I wear glasses and had to take them off so I didn't get a view at all (can't see past my elbow) but i could see down! I got to pull the cord...that was fun. It jerked you up about 3 feet or so and then you dropped prolly 40 feet or so from slack and then you pulled-out and went about 10 feet off the ground. That was great. Funny thing was when we left the ride, my mom was standing there with her hands on her hips and a pursed lip... We got busted. Later in the season, we did the SlingShot which is one of those ball things that shoots you up instead of dropping you. That was neat but you were looking up so you couldn't see crap. Still worth the 15 bucks.

I rode RipCord at WoF, Daredevil Dive at SFGAm, and, the day after tom., I will have ridden RipCord at Vallefair!. It is the most fun it is possible to have when you are not on a coaster. Freefalling is insane.

I've been on SkyFlyer At Paramount Canada's Wonderland five times and I thought it was well worth the money everytime. It's hard to get over a fear. Like previously mentioned, dangling in the air waiting to fall is the scariest part but as soon as you're done, you'll wonder why you were so scared. Give her a try.

I just got back from Kissimmee FL, I rode the skycoaster there. IT WAS INSANE. I have also ridden Bomber's Bay at SFoT. It is not as intense but it was a lot of fun. If you can ride one for 5 bucks you should do it. The scariest part is first mili-second of free fall, then it is like flying.

How safe are these skycoasters? I've heard so many rumors about how dangerous they are.

I've ridden a few and all of them seemed completely safe. Its an odd feeling being held by only a carabiner clip but that just adds to my thrill.

It is a little strange when you are free falling. The restraint is falling with you so it doesn't seem to be working but when it catches you it is very snug and tight. I don't think I have heard anything of someone getting hurt on a skycoaster, but you never know if you are just paying five bucks for one!

I've only ever heard of one person being hurt on one and that was a few years ago. So really, I'd say the risk is the same as any other amusement ride.

I dont know of anyone EVER being killed on or from a SkyCoaster and the only bad thing I know of is what happened at WetNWild (NN or is it in SC?) when they were testing it the tested pulled to soon and hit the load part and was hurt but did NOT die.... that was like 3 summers ago.

What freaks me out about skycoasters is the cord that you have to pull. On some you have to pull the cord more distance before you are let go, and others the slightest tug lets go.

ive dont the one at SFoG 3 times. i always use my 1/2 off coupon with the season pass. the first time i was shaking and kept asking my friend are u sure about this? i made her pull the cord. we were cussing and screaming as it pulled up and i thought we were almost there, then noticed the shadow and we were only 1/2 way. we loved it. anyone know how high the one at wild adventures is? it looks almost 300 feet. maybe 250. THAT was scary. it has little desert scrubby plants below and the park is so small u can see everything down below u. lol. theyre definitely worth $30. try splitting the price with other ppl. its more fun with 3.

Yeap, that's the one I rode at the MGM Grand. I rode it back in 1999 and I'm pretty sure they were advertising it as the world's tallest back then, but as you say, it's not the tallest any more. Do you know how tall the Las Vegas one is? I've actually got a photo of myself on it, which I need to dig out, maybe that has the stats.

Skycoasters are almost if not always the safest rides in their respective parks. I know this because of my WoF RipCord experience.
