CP's Thunder Canyon

Today at CP, we went to go check out the line for Thunder Canyon. There wasn't one. My dad peeked over the rail and said, "Looks like there's no water!"
We went up to the observation platform, and lo and behold, Thunder Canyon had about two inches of water in it, though some parts were completely bare. There were two kids sitting in a raft just past the lookout. Two red striped shirt guys were talking to the ride ops that were in the middle of the ride on the island. One red striped guy (guy #1) kept talking into his walkie talkie. About five minutes later, Guy #2 went over to the boat and jumped in the ankle deep water (with his shoes on!) and walked the kids out to the middle island. There was a ride op with the kids, too. They walked off and we stood there and watched the birds while we waited for thie water to come rushing down, After about 15 minutes, the water came whooshing down. Rather impressive, I must say. We watched it fill up and then we went to lunch. Does anyone know what happened?

(Be sure to read my TR!)

I doubt they were just cleaning if there were already people on the ride -- that's kind of a "WHOOPS!" sort of situation. The pumps probably cut out (maybe because they needed cleaning!), so they'd have to clear out the ride and repair it first.

I have never seen that happen but it must have been pretty strange to be the guests.

Probably cleaning, but why would they do that during the middle of the day and not after the park closes?

I doubt it was done during the day on purpose -- maybe they thought they could make it another day, but misjudged the timing.

When we walked by, it was about 11:45, so do you think it could have been miscommunication? Like if someone didn't get a "Don't open the ride yet, we have to clean the pumps" message? I don't know, that's just speculation.

My guess is that the ride probably E-stopped (emergency stopped) itself....they wouldn't stop the ride with guests on it...it's a BIG safety issue. If it was something simple...which it sounds like it was...they didn't have to evac. the ride. I was working on Flume at ValleyFair earlier this season and the damn ride E-stopped itself like 2 times within an hour because of air-pressure loss. It's a HUGE pain in the ass when a water ride E-stops.

I don't know what happened, but it must have been cool seeing the water rushing through the ride.
