Dollywood 2008 Project

Someone in the 2007 DW thread pointed out there is no thread for 2008 yet and since construction has begun, I figured I would start one.

As of now, DW has begun to do lots of groundwork behind Timber Canyon, stretching to the area around Tennessee Tornado. There is also much groundwork going on in the loop that the train makes on the mountain, it is now a big hole!

Hopefully we'll have some news in a few weeks.

I will be going to Dollywood again Tuesday and hopefully I can get more information/a better look at what is going on for 2008. Obviously we will have the new path AND a new ride, but there is too much work going on in the hills to just be a new ride!

^Dude, once again, I have to say it. I wouldn't get your hopes too high just because they are moving more dirt around than normal. As is usual with setting up new areas, they're probably putting in a lot of utilities for future use. Remember, not only did they just spend $17 million, but they actually came out and said that this year's investments would be minor.

Still, this lone stretch of path will be one of the most welcomed additions to DW in awhile. Has anyone other than the ultra-reliable train conductor said anything about new rides for the area?

^I know. There will be a NEW RIDE back there next year (according to a DW employee) that we were told would satisfy us if we wanted something thrilling (this from someone on the board from DW I believe). I'm just saying that the work will be for something much bigger than a new ride and path, obviously for future (after 2008) use.

Plus, that is really the only way DW can expand so it makes sense to put two and two together and see that something will eventually be up there.

Even though they said it would be thrilling, it doesn't mean it's going to be some HUGH ride. lol.

What ever happened to IloveDW?

^If Giant Swing was/is received well at Silver Dollar City, then I would agree it is most likely a Screamin' Swing. It would be fun if they would upgrade the air tanks to give a longer ride.

^TGS has been very well received at SDC, lines have stretched pretty long on it all season, and I have yet to hear anything but glorious reviews of it. Plus, seeing as it is powered mostly by air, the Hershends are loving it's low-impact on the environment.
I like it to, it's not terribly thrilling or long, but it's fun, and it's something to do between back-to-back Wildfire and PK rides.

I'll bet money that DW gets one within 3 years, but not this year.

^How much do you want to bet? I'm pretty sure DW will not get a Screamin' Swing. Especially since one is located less than 3 blocks from DW.

I really hope it's not one of the giant S&S swings. Their cycle is so short.

The small one on the strip blows the big ones out of the water (and yes I've been on both kinds)!

Now that I think about it, didn't the small one get taken out (out on the parkway).

I was on the parkway 2 weeks ago, and it was still there.

I like Screamin' Swings, I would love them but the cycle length is so pathetic that it takes away tons from the ride. I've never been to Dollywood but I hope they don't get one.

^ I've been to DW, it has been a few years back but I think a Screamin' Swing would go nice there. They are really short but I still like them.

NO!! I hate SS!!! It's like i've said. I don't think it's sensible for DW to get one since SDC has one. Just like i wouldn't be right for SDC to get a Mystery Mine... But if they did, it'd be ok....i guess

The next section will be an ice section ....keep this in mind!

^ I doubt that DW ever gets an ice section! I hope this NEVER happens! I really don't know what else they could go with though..so just maybe...Anybody else have any ideas for future themes?

ALSO...I just got back from DW and really didn't get any information, I asked a worker on Thunderhead and she acted like she had no clue, though I could tell she was lying.

They were testing Timber Tower with test dummies (literal plastic things that looked like people), so I guess it will re-open soon.

I figured out about the "work" they are doing in the loop at the train...they are putting all that EXTRA dirt they have from digging the new path in that loop, filling it up. Whoever made the observation that it was just one big hole to being with was correct.

The new path will end DIRECTLY behind Blazing Fury, right beside the games across from TT. There is currently a big gate there and you can see the work going on all the way up the STEEP hill. LOTS of work to be done! Also, they are still doing work on the top of the hill beside TT as well. The overbanked curve on TT is no longer backed by trees, just a desolate, bare hillside.

A couple of the people i know from the park are saying that the new path will look alot like craftmans valley meets timber caynon. They are also telling me that the next section could possible be the ice section. I keep telling them that it really shouldn't be, becuase that's just really random!!! I mean, i can understand Timber Caynon, Craftmans valley, ECT...but an ice section??!?!

^What's this about an 'ice section'? That doesn't even make sense, do you mean like a winter wonderland or like the ice house thing? If the latter, how are they going to make an area themed to that one thing alone? It sounds desperately odd to me.

Yeah, they ran an "ice house" in the surveys a few years back, I hope they don't do that... tacky.

I am also anti-Ice section. Tacky is right on.

That said, I kind of liked the pitch about the Ice House coaster...but definitely not an entire area about snow. The idea is too cartoonish. It wouldn't work with the rest of the park.

It was from one of their surveys. Basically the concept for the area was "Winter in the Smokies" year round, with fake snow on the ground, all the buildings covered with fake icicles, etc. I believe there was also an indoor ice skating rink. YUCK!

I wouldn't mind a LITTLE section being Ice. Like the coaster, a shop, a restaurant, and a bathroom. But not a huge section like this path will be.

^ I think the coaster was what turned into Mystery Mine.

It said something about an ice sleigh gone array and the concept art looked a lot like Mystery Mine ended up looking like (just minus the ice).

And I also concur on the fake snow/ice section. It would have been kinda weird looking unless it was in small touches, like on Alpenegeist at BGE.

Dollywood has done such a great job of blending their sections and rides into the surrounding area/topography, I would hope they'd keep that trend.

Well some parks survive on an all Christmas theme so maybe they could make an all ice area work.

I could see a mountain "snow" theme working here. The pathway will go way up and over down to the craftman's valley. It actually would make sense to do some sort of lightly snow covered themed buidings, trees, fake snow blowing on the pathways etc. It would be difficult to make it blend with the rest of the park, but it is definitely possible and could be the next themed area. However, from what I've heard, it doesn't snow much in the Smokeys so would this even make sense for a Smokey Mt. theme park?

An ice skating rink doesn't seem that cool, but if they did it for their christmas fest, it would be cool because they could do it outdoors. Indoor rinks are lame and are for places like Phoenix. Plus, there is an indoor rink at Ober Gatlinburg.

It would be pretty random to have a snow section. It sound's pretty nice and all, but random. But they could have chair/ski lift...you know they've talked about that before. But who knows. I just hope it's not. I'd like to see another water ride in a couple of year. I know about half of you would disagree, but i still think they should. And if they do it in the ice section, it could be like an ice/water ride (if that makes since, which we all know is hard for me to do )

And no... It NEVER EVER Snows around here anymore!!!!!!!!

^ I wouldn't mind a mountain-snow section I think it'd be pretty cool. You could do alot with that, like the chair/ski lift you mentioned. I've been a real ski lift and I enjoyed it. You said about half of the people wouldn't like the idea of another water ride. I wouldn't mind a new one, but not another flume-like ride. I also wouldn't want to see one right away; DW needs to get some new coasters and flats before they get another water ride (which they have plenty of).

Maybe they could put in one of those awesome looking German mountain coasters!

It's like Mtn. Slidewinder, but on rails and on crack!
