Kennywood 2008 Construction

Well, I stopped by the park today and saw a very big suprise. It looks like Kennywood has already begun on whatever they have planned for the 2008 season at the site of the late Gold Rusher. Seems like our original idea that a new dark ride would just replace the Gold Rusher in the existing building has been proven false considering they have already ripped out a majority of the building.

One thing that really caught my eye was that they stopped all the demolition once they reached the structure of the building that the games sit in. I have a very strong feeling that this whole building might be on its way out to make room for whatever the park has planned for next season. The park has already shown us that they aren't afraid to take some of the games at the park after taking out the building to put the 3-point basketball game in. The only thing I see actually staying in this area is the bathrooms, considering they just put those in a few years ago. But that's just what I think is going to happen. Anyways, here's the pictures.

I guess Mary Lou wasn't kidding when she told the news that they are trying to modernize parts of the park to keep up with current industry trends. Considering the building is about 20 years old, maybe the park just thought it would be better off just starting from scratch. I really can't see this being the only thing they are taking out either, because if indeed they are building a new ride, there's no way it'll fit in that small area.

I don't think it is going to be a new ride now that I see this. I have a strong feeling it is going to be the return of a past ride like the Bayren Kurve or the Swing Around.

Bayern Kurve isn't done being restored yet. Swing Around will either be going to Idlewild or Lake Compounce.

Something Really New

It is kind of odd that they are starting construction so early though, I can't wait to see what's going to be coming for 2008!

If they started already, then it must be a big change. Sweet.

Huss Fisbee Anyone? That might be too big for the area though. maybe something more like a Chance Revolution.Other ideas could be a Ferris Wheel or Observation Tower

The Swing Around is in pretty bad condition. It probably won't go anywhere. The Bayern Kurve is pretty close to being done though, and it was slated to open this year before they decided on Cosmic Chaos, so... who knows? Maybe the Kurve WILL come back (crossing my fingers!)

I don't think a Huss Frisbee would fit .

Oh well, I'm sure they have something fun up their sleeves!

If anything, I think they'll tear down the Sportland area, which now houses all the games, and just build a totally new building to house a new dark ride. I just don't see a ride like a Huss Frisbee fitting into that area, which is mostly all dining and games.

^They would both fit(not at the same time), but I am pretty sure that KW is trying to still compete with modern parks. The past couple of years saw thrill rides and major refurbs of some of the older stuff.

I hope they don't get a Frisbee. I've only been on two (a Chance and a Moser) and they both didn't impress me too much. The Chance was SO boring and the Moser was fun, but nothing great. Don't know if Frisbees are a lot better but I hope they don't get a Sally either, if Reese's Extreme Cup Challenge is any example.

The new rumor now is that a new heavily themed scrambler ride will go in.

A new scrambler ride does sound cool , but I think kennywood will probably get something that can have more Capacity, that’s why they took the Rusher out. I think it will be another Dark ride, or a newer thrill ride.

Someone on another coaster forum said that the new 2008 ride Kennywood is going to put in will be in the same building as the gold rusher was. The demolition pics that everyone saw was just the façade, and that there will be not bridge over the midway to the ride. Even though this person said they work at the park I doubt that he knows what they are going to put in, I just thought I’d tell everybody what could be a possibility.

Some of you probably will not believe this, but the Mechanic, over on KP Connaction said that if S&S doesn't get these problems dealt with, the SS is on thin ice.

I don't think KW will scrap a ride just because of sup-par realiability. If anything happens I hope that S&S replace it.

Let's face it. The SwingShot is a LEMON. And its not Kennywood's fault. S&S designed the ride very poorly. Every park that owns an S&S swing has had some sort of problem. Although, it does seem that Kennywood's ride has had the worst of problems. The SwingShot has had problems since the end of May in 2006.

If you were Kennywood, would you want to keep a ride that has had problems since it opened? I honestly don't think the park is very happy with S&S right now. I hope S&S can fix whatever needs to be permantenly fixed for next year, or there will be no more SwingShot.

I hope that the SwingShot doesn't go. I had no clue that there were so many problems with it.

I really do not recall any major closures of SS. Honestly, Skyhawk never had any major shutdowns either(or at least to my knowledge.) No park will ever remove a two year old ride. EVER. If anything happens with SS, its either a lawsuit or replacement. I'm pretty sure S&S will do something if SS is in as bad of shape as you proclaim it to be.
Imagine this: you have > two year old Ford. It has constantly broken down and been nothing but trouble. Would you sue, ask for > replacement, or scrap it?

SS will not be scraped. End of discussion.

SwingShot has had a LOT of issues since they bought it last year. Mary Lou and Jerome have both said that KW's has had one side closed a lot, and Lake Compounce hasn't had a thing wrong with theirs. Same model and everything. It is kinda weird.

When I am at PFN on the 5th I will try to take some pics of the area. See what they have done so far.
