The Dark Knight - New at Six Flags Great America in 2008

Six Flags Great America has announced their new coaster today, the same coaster that both Six Flags Great Adventure and Six Flags New England are receiving. I'm excited that we're getting a new coaster at SFGAm but also question the coaster we're getting. From the description of it and also Screamscape noticed it's the same length as Mack wild mouse coasters such as Cheetah Chase at Busch Gardens Africa , it would appear to be a wild mouse. That seems like a strange coaster for our park since we already have a wild mouse and in fact, it was the last coaster added to the park.

Now I know there will be some differences, a main one being that this is a dark ride. I think that could make it a lot of fun and an enjoyable ride. I just wish it could've been something considerably different from the last ride we receieved. It is said to be a 7 million dollar investment. With that amount being spent, I would've loved a big flat or even another wooden coaster like the similarly priced Evel Kneviel coaster that Six Flags St. Louis is getting.

As it is though, I'm sure I'll enjoy the new coaster and it's great that the park is finally adding a new coaster after four seasons without a new coaster or major new ride.

This is a good filler for their supposed Dive Machine in 09 or 10.

That makes no sense if there's already a wild mouse in the park.

^ this one is a dark ride and the other is a spinning wild mouse. Ragin Cajun is probably my least favorite coaster out there...

Not making any remarks, my home park wants two mouse rides, I guess were gonna have two mouse rides. Dark, not dark, spinning, not spinning, Haven't really been on a mouse ride that I liked. Why do I see myself saying, "Well, for what it is, its O.K." BTW I hate when people say that about a coaster I ask about.

You know, if they were willing to shell out and do this like IOA's Spiderman, I'd be all shiznits and giggles right now... but this is *****ing awful. Granted I'm glad we're not getting a fourth children's area, but this is not what will bring people back to the park.

WE NEED A TALL, FAST, PISS YOUR PANTS ROLLER COASTER

And really how does it get any taller than Raging Bull? Who built the last Millenium Force? There's only one. You'd think Shapiro would allow another Kingda Ka be built? hahaha. Your best shot is a shorter than Raging Bull floorless coaster.

I'm aware of that they can't build past the Sky Trek Tower and aware that Shapiro has his picture in Webster's under "thrift".

But the surveys all said people want the thrills again and I don't think this will be categorized under "adrenaline rush". For one thing, I can already tell this will cause confusion with guests cuz even though it's called "The Dark Knight", people will call it "the Batman ride"... so now we have two Batman rides in two different locations.

I will say this in their favor, if they want to prove to us that they can put an emphasis on theming to a Disney or even Dollywood degree, this is their chance.

This is their chance to shine. I was going to be kind to not discount the Chicago area GP from being able to pick apart the difference between the coasters. I like Chi-town.

So does anyone know EXACTLY where this "coaster" is going to go? I know its going in Orleans place, but its seems odd that there is a wild mouse "style" ride there now. What are the chances that they are going to REALLY cheap out on us and just put a building up around the Rajun cajun, rename and theme it? If not, Id like to see where they are going to put a building of that size in Orleans place.

I thought the same thing but they said it would be a Mack coaster. In addition, the location for the ride is said to be in-between S:UF and Theater Royale. I have no idea exactly how the hell they plan to squeeze that in but it'll be interesting.

Since that was the rumor going on, I checked the area as much as I could last time I was there. And knowing now that the new ride will be roughly the same size as Ragin' Cajun except it will have a building over it, it won't be a very big ride at all. I see no problem with it fitting there between Superman- Ultimate Flight and the theater. When they say that, I do think they mean a little farther back, not literally directly between them. You can see that there is a fair amount of room back there along S-UF's lifthill and surrounding area. They may have to move some minor stuff and some obvious groundwork but I don't see it being a problem.

And I did some Google searchs and was reading some links from local paper's online sites and it says the new ride will feature special effects and other stuff besides the ride merely just being in the dark. So maybe it will turn out to be a great experience.

I was just checking in to see if anyone around SFGam has been or is planning on snapping some pics? Im sure there are others like myself interested in the deconstruction of Deja Vu or the construstion of The Dark Knight.
Remember back in 2001 when they were building DejaVu and V2 that someone flew over the park and got some nice shots?
I wonder if hes still around?

I'm interested in Dark Knight if for no other reason that it's a new ride, specifically a new coaster. It's been a few years, four actually, since Six Flags Great America received a new coaster. I don't think it will be a coaster that will amaze me but I'm looking forward to it. What I'm really excited about though is the first signs of construction for what I hope will be something big in 2009.

No. IMO, it's the second bad idea SFGAm has had in a row now. First they ruin the Eagle tent with Wiggles, now they're taking out the best Boomerang breed there is for a coaster they already have.

Well, I tend to disagree - just a bit. The eagle tent needed to be made into something. Im not sure about wiggles world, but it was alot of wasted space. Back in "the day" when the Eagle was new ( yes I was there - and remeber it )- you needed a area that big for the line - they had multiple vending kiosks and shows and whatnot. Its just not needed anymore. As far as Deja Vu goes. Remember when it was put in? There were no wooden "decks" or staircases all over. They had to put those in there because it kept vallying. Why not make the spkies taller? Oh - that hight restriction thing . How about making the loops smaller? Instaid of fixing a poorly engineered ride, they tried to bandage it by installing heaters to keep the grease in the wheels warm so theyd roll better, and put in those escape decks in case it vallied - which it too commonly did.
I did get to ride it a couple times - it is a hell of a ride - no doubt about it. Its just a shame you have to look over at it when on another coaster to see if it is open, closed, or just testing- to know weather or not to get in line for it.
The bad part about it leaving is they have to find something to put in that footprint of equal or greater thrills. As we dont need another play area - theres already 3 in the park and they dont exactly optimize space the best.
I am hopeful for the Dark Knight. A good ride to me isnt all about speed and hight and loops any more (yah im getting old), but as it has been stated, there are so many good rides out there that utilize theming to make the overall experience better. Spiderman and the Mummy come to mind. Even Dr Dooms fearfall brings you more into the ride instaid of just looking at a tower with seats sliding down them while your queued. Like on our Giant Drop.
So hopefully they present the ride well - Im being optimistic here because SFGam generally doesnt do that.

But with $7 million dollars as the budget, what kind of theming do you think they will be able to produce for this ride? It seems like all the glamarous dark rides with a physical thrill like Spidey and The Mummy cost in excess of $10 million, so how do you suppose they will pull off something decent?

$7million will probably get above par Six Flags theming. It probably won't be as amazing as something from Disney or Universal, but it will be a step-up from what we've come to expect from SF.

Spidey was in the was close to 100 million, so just take that as a sign.

and this is 7 million for the entire ride and theming.

You'll be lucky to get a pitch black room with a few batman symbols projected onto the walls.
