Zoombezi Bay Construction Pics

I was home from school on fall break this past weekend and decided to swing by Zoombezi Bay and the Columbus Zoo to check out the construction progress. Pictures from 10.15.07 here:

Name: Zoombezi Bay water park
Opening: May 17th, 2008
Size: 22.7 acres
Cost: $38 Million for entire redevelopment
What: Rebirth of the former Wyandot Lake park. The Zoo kept the roller coaster and a water play structure, other attractions are new. Water slides include a mat racer, Tornado Slide, a Family raft ride, Bowl slides, Tube slides, free-fall slides, lazy and action rivers, a wave pool and more.
http://www.columbuszoo.org/news/newsroom/waterprk.html

"The landscaping will be natural and could become habitats for some animals to live among Zoombeezi Bay, and the park likely will become another way to educate people about conservation of animals and natural resources."

This place is going to be awesome in the near future. The Columbus Zoo is already top notch and just keeps getting better. Visit my youtube site for a video of the zoo including some footage from the boat ride.

The bowl slides look sweet. And what in god's name is an "action river"?!?

^ an action river is like a lazy river just not lazy, there are waves, and many other things to grab youre attention...One question, did I read it right that the Bowl will only give 36 riders an hour? Terrible capacity...

I saw that too, I want to believe it is wrong/typo because that is horrible. Maybe it is supposed to be 360?

^ Even 360 isn't alot if it is hot out. Imagine the line. I remember waiting 45 mins for Master Blaster @ Magic Waters. Too long to wait for a water ride, even though it was a good water ride...

360 isn't bad for a water ride. That's 6 people a minute, and if you have double tubes, that's one tube every 20 seconds, and since the next tube can't launch until the next one is clear of the end of the slide, that also means that the ride is about 20 seconds long. 360 seems about right, actually...

Not every waterslide works where you have to wait until the tube in front of you is clear. Zoombabwe and Bakuli at Holiday World's Splashing Safari had multiple tubes going down at the same time, though spaced pretty far apart.

still...20 seconds isn't a very long time, and that might be the amount of time required to wait between launching tubes.

I think I may be heading that direction next weekend but probably won't have time to take pictures. If I don't get any updates the rest of this year, I know I'll be driving by the way more often in the spring so there should be more updates then and hopefully much more vertical construction as well.

I really look forward to those bowl slides, finally got on two last summer but they were both ridden with tubes. Are either of these bowls ridden without? Keep the updates comming!

I took a detour on my way home from work and snapped this quick video as I drove by Zoombezi Bay construction site on Feb 8th, 2008. Hopefully will have more better updates in the future.

That different in terms of covering park construction.

I was about to create a thread asking about Sea Dragon, the woodie coaster left over from Wyandot Lake. My sister moved to Columbus and needs help moving. It's not listed on the list of attractions so I may skip visiting the place. When she first looked at Ohio State she did visit Wyandot Lake but could not remember if she rode Sea Dragon. I'd love to get on it. I do understand it's a clone of the Beastie/Odd Fairy coaster.

The Sea Dragon roller coaster is still there and should reopen with the rest of the park, may be under a different name though. It's not exactly the same as the Beastie at Kings Island, the loading station is on a curve not a straightaway.

I also read it's a mirror. My next trip to see my sister may be in May. If it debuts under a different name I may show up and score it.

The Sea Dragon will still be there along with other dry rides, but I have not seen any mention of the dry rides on Zoombezi Bay's Web Site. Back in 07, ACE reported that they were also going to build a spinning coaster at the park. Does anyone know why they have made no mention of the dry rides part of the park? I know they will be a separate charge.

I swung by the zoo the other day and took some construction pictures. There is still a ton of work to do but the good news is it was 6:30pm on a Friday when I stopped by and they were still hard at work. It appears as though all of the major slides are done so the majority of work left to do is the ride side. Rides I could see: wooden coaster, swinging ship ride, flyers, and a log flume. Enjoy the pictures.

There is a picture on my photobucket site with the listing of all of the rides. The bad news is you have to pay for each individual ride.

Pay by ride sounds Jersey Boardwalk style. I can manage because Sea Dragon was just going to be it for me. My parents may go Memorial to Columbus to help my sister move. If I could fly in, cool.

Jungle Jack's Landing is the name of the dry rides section. Information was so scarce about the dry section but now we have it. You can buy individual rides or a wristband. I doubt the dry section will be still open in October but I can hope. I want to ride Sea Dragon. In late October I'll be in town to visit my sister and see the Penn State - Ohio State game.
