SFNE cancels The Dark Knight Coaster Coaster

Well, it's official guys.

The Dark Knight Coaster will not be introduced at Six Flags New England this year, and it doesn't look like it will happen next year either.

All construction work that has been completed to date will be dismantled.

The park cited ongoing delays in regards to floodplain issues and footprint relocation with the city of Agawam as well as issues with the state as well.

The park plans to introduce Glow in the Dark instead --- a nighttime parade spectacular, similar to the one that will be operating at Great Adventure this summer.

Thats a bummer. I don't think i have ever hard of a coaster being canceled but that sucks for the home park crowd.

^ I think the most recent example is of Hersheypark canceling their Frequent Faller coaster (this was a few years before Farenheit). If I remember correctly, the parts of the ride were already manufactured and site preparation had already begun.

Does this mean that their floorless coaster will still be called Dark Knight? I sure as hell hope so, it's not just some B:TR.

Ahahahaha... GOOD. SFNE doesn't need MORE low capacity rides.. Nor does it need a mouse. Maybe now the park will add something worth riding in 09 (yeah.. right...)

For the size and spread of their park I'm still not convinced a coaster addition is needed. A flat update, yeah. If it was a Mind Eraser replacement with a B&M invert, yeah. A B&M floorless is already there though.

From the Mass Live article: "Construction was halted for a time by Agawam building officials' concerns over flood plain issues and changes in the footprint of the structure." The flood plain seems like a legit issue with the way that land slopes down.

It's too bad I can't call it even but SFNE got served for that parking mess of last year.

^Nahh just send it to a certain Maryland park that hasn't gotten anything coasterwise in 8 years & flatwise in 5 years for 2009....they owe us big time for the whole ultra twister mess a few years ago anyway.

Mega Park SFMM to medium size SFA, yea, it's a place to send a wild mouse. I tried as hard as I could in crossing my fingers to resist a mouse for my SFGADV, the best I could do now is try to save SFMM.

Well, you guys won't have to worry about Magic Mountain getting this ride. The park's 2009 coaster is already in planning stages.

Let's hear the rumors for other possible locations though...because the ride has already been fabricated, it just now needs a park that has the right zoning permits and city approvals.

SFA did have county approval for an indoor coaster type ride that was on the approved list from 1999 but I don't think that Shapiro & co. are working from that original masterplan any longer.

Chances are though that SFI will probably just cancel the order from the manufacturer & get their $7.5 million back that they paid for the ride,it'd be much easier to do that then to try & place the ride in a different park.

Does it become ammo in the SFMM-Cedar Fair once pronounced dead Coaster War to make a quick attempt to get back in it? Do they have something planned for Flashback's site already?

Are they too embarrassed, tied up to have the coaster presented now as a n outdoor coaster and built on that plot if they can go get it approved?

I was still inclined to call it that way. Can a local affirm "Batman: The Dark Knight" is the words on that coaster sign still? I read it is still there.

I wouldn't be too suprised if it doesn't show up at SFStL next year as it seems to be really easy to get things approved by the Eureka/Allentown city councils. Also that park already has an area that is themed to Gotham City so it would be easy to plop it in there...

...or at SFoG there were the area's waiting area was in Gotham City. That would probably be an easier location to put it in as it is already flat and paved.

-------------
Regarding the name of the floorless -- I heard that it still says the old name on the ride building

That would fit right in too with the other coasters. I'm for the SFOG then. That would fit with their timetable of when they received new rides anyway.

I'm glad "the Dark Knight" is still on the Floorless coaster station.

First off... Old "DK" still has its BDK sign on the station.. Nothing was ever changed within the park itself to say "BTR".

And I still think this POS ride will popup within SFNE itself in 2009.

Ahh...you are speaking of Turbulence which was supposed to go in a few years ago. I'm not sure if the parts were manufactured, but I know they had a sight picked out, they cancelled the coaster because the manufactured raised the price of the coaster (due to an increase in steel pricing) and Hershey didn't want to pay more since they had both already agreed on a price.

^True.

And I wouldn't be surprised like James said. They just allowed themselves to wipe the slate. There were supposed to move the whole structure ten feet, that's what the town wanted at the construction halt. It's going to come down like the news articles said regardless. It might pop up. Directions have to be followed though first.

Yeah but SFSTL has already recieved TWO coasters in back to back years so they DON'T need yet a third one,at least not yet.

We don't know for sure what SFI will do with the ride at this point,as they may just decide to keep it in storage for years at SFNE,or just return it to Mack for a refund of the purchase price.

We can't judge the inertia behind SFSTL with Redzone right? It might just keep rolling so TWO might become THREE. It's Shapiro's to control in the off season.

It wouldn't make sense to build the coaster anywhere at all with Dark Knight Theming too long after the other two open. It's not like B:TR where it'll be popular for a long time. If they do build it this year, I'm all for SFOG, SFStL, or SFMM, but otherwise, it'll be strange. Maybe if they still want it in SFNE, they'll put a new theme on it in 2009.

EDIT: Do they even have the theming made yet, or just the coaster itself. They could just send it as a wild mouse to Great Escape, where a Wild Mouse will be more appreciated in my opinion. And even if they do have the theming manufactured, they could send it to GAdv, so when when their stuff breaks, they can actually replace it instead of just leave it.

By then they could just keep it outdoors, add red cars and call it The Flash. That is DC Adventures down there? The interesting indoor Joker scrambler is gone.

Magic Mountain's 2009 coaster is already underway in planning stages, and according to the Los Angeles Times, the management has already chosen a site for the new coaster, but this information has not been disclosed to the public yet. The park was very clear to state that the new coaster will not be a Tony Hawk Big Spin spinning coaster or The Dark Knight indoor coaster.

My assumption is this canceled Dark Knight Coaster will be installed at a park that the company had planned to introduce this ride at for the 2009 season. It's all a guessing game now I guess.

Hard to do that considering Mack has already fabricated the coaster and vehicles, most of which is already on-site.

Either Six Flags plans to install this at SFNE as a 2009 addition, install it at another one of their parks, or sells it to another park operator as pre-owned equipment.

I highly doubt they "planned" to install a Dark Knight anywhere other than the three parks this year. It's a movie ride, not a hallmark coaster.

Well I guess to me "interesting" was just the fact that it was indoors because the lighting was pretty forgettable. I haven't been on enough indoor scramblers I guess. There is one in Rye, NY at Playland I realize.

A New England spin on retheming the coaster is to further work with the Burlington, Vermont founded Ben n Jerry's Ice Cream/Unilever to theme the cars to moooving cows in a themed adventure. I remember the brand showed up at SFGADV. They got bumped out of the parks for Cold Stone?
