Adventureland USA's Adventure Island Waterpark Expansion

Adventureland planning to add more water features
By KRISTA KIELSMEIER • October 15, 2009 • Des Moines Register

Following the arrival of chilly October weather, locals can look forward to expanded water park options at Adventureland next summer.
“It’s going to be the biggest addition that we’ve ever done here in one single year, and should run us about $5 million,” said Molly Vincent, Adventureland’s director of advertising.

The Altoona City Council on Oct. 5 approved the site plan for Adventure Island additions next to Kokomo Kove and the splash pad at Heron Harbor. Kokomo Kove opened in 2008.
“Because there’s some structures involved, basically, any development of land, especially of this size of about 7.5 acres, they needed site plan approval,” said Chad Quick, Altoona’s city planner. “There was also a variance that was needed to build some structures within the typical setback from 34th Avenue.”

Vincent said the water area with the addition will cover 4.5 acres, up from the current 1.5 acres. She said the site includes a swimming pool, swim-up bar, quarter-mile lazy river and 13 new water slides.
“They’re from pretty mild to pretty crazy,” Vincent said. “Some of them are as high as 75 feet.”
According to city documents, Adventure Island will have a capacity for around 2,500 guests once the addition is complete. Lifeguards will provide safety, and entry to Adventure Island will accompany a regular admission ticket to Adventureland. Vincent said officials expect the water park addition to be ready by June 2010.

I'm going to go ahead and add interest to this thread by replying to it, which I probably should anyway since Adventureland is my home park.

This is a good move for the park. A coaster would have been a better move. Adventureland is usually really cheap, so I worry that this is going to put off any other major additions for about ten years. It also has no chance of changing the way they treat their employees, which is just too bad.

With there being no major waterpark in the DSM metro area, I think this was a very smart move for the park and a wise use of land space. I personally think this will draw in a lot of locals considering that White Water University is no longer open.

Now if they want a coaster, they should go out and get that shuttle looper that was at Astroworld that was supposed to have been built at that small park in Texas. That would be a bit hit at this park

Only $399,000 I heard Greezed Lightning was listed at and anything has to be better than a Hopkins from what I'm reading. I have yet to see myself but the scarcity probably speaks about the Hopkins coasters.

Dragon isn't horrible, but it's definitely not re-rideable... at least not on the same visit.

Considering that Saw Mill Splash is one of the newest rides in the actual "ride park" (other than Splash Over) I highly doubt it will be removed any time soon.

I really like Sawmill Splash, whatever the capacity is like. However, Underground takes up a lot of very usable space.

Actually, the Underground doesn't take up very much space -- in fact it's built over the old amphitheatre (it's still there actually underneath).

I think the ride that is taking up the most valuable parcel of land is the Inverter. It is sitting on the old cement slab for Super Screamer. There is enough land there for a good sized coaster, and they could even use the lake if they wanted to.

Yeah, I figured it should be posted anyways since a lot of companies don't update their website as often as they should. It looks like a very nice expansion thats for sure.

Wow this is pretty big for Adventureland. I'm not huge on waterparks in amusement parks but I may have to make it out to Adventurelnd this summer

^and to think that this slide tower complex is ONLY the START of slide towers that will be popping up this winter. Personally I can hardly wait to see the Tantrum and HydroRocket get built.
