sfmm WILD rumor

Got this from screamscape. I dont see this happening but read on.

The latest rumor to buzz in my ear about SFMM sounds wild and crazy, but when it comes to SFMM, crazy rumors are the norm and often do come true. Superman: The Escape is a great example... no one wanted to believe the rumors about a 100mph launched coaster that would fly up a 400+ foot tower, but it happened. In this case, the letter we received claimed that the park is entertaining an ideas from Intamin to close down Superman: The Escape and use the existing tower in the design of an all new Rocket Coaster design, depending on how Kingda Ka turns out for Six Flags Great Adventure this season. The design may also call for the removal of Gold Rusher. I can verify myself that this is not the first time Intamin has talked to the park about using the tower for other rides, since there was a proposal to add a large Giant Drop ride to the tower like what was done to Superman’s sister ride in Australia at Dreamworld. Anyone else know more or is this total insanity?

Well, like you said, crazy rumors can happen...

But I see it hard for this ride's structure to be used for another, especially a roller coaster, for some reason.

Is Superman still having horrible down time still??

You never know. It's a possibility since it seeems that Superman: The Escape is never able to run at full power anyway people say. If it were kept the same ride just with a hydraulic launch, I don't see it being too much of a stretch. I don't know if they would use the tower for a circuit like Top Thill Dragster or Kingda Ka if it would even be possible to retrofit it for that. Odds are that it won't happen but I wouldn't rule it out completely. That is that they would make it a hydraulic launch but keep it the same design.

I saw that on screamscape as well. I really doubt they would do that, but I also doubted PGA would sell PC their 3 year old flyer to put in a water park. lol

i just read that on screamscape and it sounds cool. i could see this happening if KK goes well. it would be cool for there to be one train and it launches from one side and then people get on at the other station and launch back and so on. so there would still be two stations and it launches from one and then the other. but they would obviously have to connect the top. the only problem is that the line would be tremendously long so it is more likely that it will be a continuous circuit if it ever happens.

Very interesting. Since Superman has been having problems over the years, I wouldn't be surprised if they did this. But im not so shure at this point if they would. Its just a matter of time.

They shouldn't add another coaster. And they wouldn't take one out, as they NEED the record to survive. They should clean up the park, and fix maintenence. Going for over a year without all the coasters operating on one day is just horrible.

I thought modifying Superman The Escape to a rocket coaster would be a good idea, but it's not. They'd have to modify the heck out of it. If they wanted to remove the LIMs and just launch the regular vehicles up the tower, they'd have to modify the launch track. The launch track slants downward a bit. Intamin rocket launches slant upward.

They'd have to throw the hydraulic room over walkways or modify the tower a bit so they could place it below it.

It's a lot of work and it's a fun rumor. It's just not going to happen unless they completely remove Superman and replace it with a rocket.

I say just keep Superman as decoration, and add a clone of Rita. Wouldn't have to take up to much of the parking lot!

What Chip says basically sums it up. So much work just to modify it, what happens when that's over with and then you actual have to start paying for the new coaster.

Would the existing tower be used for the top hat? Could that even hold one up? It seems like the tower itself would have to be modified a lot.

The tower is far too narrow for the trackage requirements for a tophat. Cantilevers are not a good idea for supporting track. An option would be to add two towers set back or forward to the current structure an weld on cross support junctions.

To be honest, it probably would be cheaper to scrap the entire ride and rebuild a new ride if they wanted a Accelerator coaster there.

^^ agreed.

I don't think it would be structurally sound to do it anyway. How are you going to weld track to older track that is 400ft in the air anyway?

Like Marc said, they'd pretty much have to scrap it and then build again. I can't see them doing that.

I agree,I mean if they really wanted a rocket so bad they could've just sent KK to SFMM instead of SFGRADV & be done with it.

SFMM doesn't need any coaster record in order to survive......instead they need to focus on other areas & demographics for a while such as fixing what they've got now & adding some flats to bring in the family crowd, after all a good theme park isn't just about coasters you know.

I can see it happening but its just some things that were mentioned in that post that seemed a little off. I don’t understand why such a park like Six Flags Magic Mountain would wait to see how Kingda Ka will do before building their own version, isn’t this the park that’s not only famous but infamous for introducing new coaster types first? This is also a park that is such dependent on their coaster count that they wouldn’t remove Gold Rusher and Superman: The Ride only to gain one coaster, they would build around it or find some way... I can see them renovating Superman to become a rocket though. It's obviously a fake and was sent in from some fan.

How would they gain the record back anyways seeing how that tower is only 415 feet anyways...The most I could see them doing is just putting a non complete circuit coaster in, maybe just putting two hydraulic launches and towers up and just make it a newer S:TE. I can't even see that happening though. The only thing I could see them doing is using that area to put in a hydraulic coaster that I don't see breaking records. I don't think they're going to put a record breaker in and take the spotlight away from SFGADV. The only time I see another record breaker going in here is if Kingda Ka's record gets taken away by Cedar Point or some other park. Even then, I don't see a record breaker going to SFMM anytime soon if ever anyways.

Reasons that It probably won't happen:

1. I don't think SF would take the record from one SF park into another, especially one this important.

2. Some of SFMM's competition is in KBF, which already has a rocket coaster. It'd be pretty pointless to put in a big TTD/KK type of coaster, because Xcelerator is pretty similar to the general concept of those two rides as well.

3. S:TE is a large structure that fits a very unusual track. To use the structure and put the regular Intamin track there would be very expensive, and wouldn't allow for much more of a ride than what is already there

If SFMM wanted to do something with that area of land, they should build the tallest, fastest roller coaster that has inversions, including the tallest inversion as well. I can easily imagine a 90 MPH rocket coaster that launches right into an enormous inversion of some sort. This park needs to get creative, and then they'll be succesful.

Well a rocket with inversions sounds like a good idea just like Storm Runner. Though they still do have the tallest coaster with inversions with Viper.

^That's true, but they don't have the tallest inversion. That record goes to Volcano, followed by only about 5 feet with Storm Runner and SheiKra.

Not really... the only extra business they get from the record is the business of coaster enthusiasts who are sitting here trying to decide whether or not to go to CP or SFMM... and at this point it looks like they've already lost the battle.

That, however, is the right idea.

Actually that's a perfect reason to install a huge, inverting rocket. Why would anyone want to ride Xcelerator when they can drive across town and ride something that's twice as big and has inversions?

Incorrect. This honor goes to Son Of Beast.

According to Chris Godsey (Thrillride!), the park is NOT removing any coasters. Which sadly includes Flashback- they're just going to continue to let it sit and rot while counting it in their coaster count.

But they will be adding another coaster next year. That's all the details out so far. So as to what type or where, that's all for speculation.

bgt should have kicked it up a notch and built a inversion taller than volcano

Volcano's is only higher, that one barely varies in height. SheiKra's, if I'm not mistaken, is the TALLEST.

I highly doubt it, if anything they will close Superman and take it down, or do some construction on it or whatever, and the rumors will be hectic, but I doubt it, the ride is fun but its so old and... I dunno, but I just doubt it.

Oh shoots. You are totally right. Kind of how Magic Mountain built the B&M inverter Batman The Ride with Knott's following up with the exact same style of ride by the same manufacturer - Silver Bullet?

They should just scrap S:TE and put in a rocket. Putting a rocket on the old S:TE tower would be stupid, and that tower has begun to rust, so that brings structural issues into the conversation.
