Thumbs down Rebel Yell - Forwards ONLY?!

http://www.screamscape.com/html/kings_dominion.htm

Rumor on Screamscape says Rebel Yell at KD may only run forwards on both tracks. I think this would be the worst idea ever... I really don't care at all for the forward side. It has basically zero airtime and is generally rough and not much fun.

Backwards, however, is smooth, and in the back has some freaking amazing airtime. Please, please, PLEASE, tell me Cedar Fair wouldn't ruin one of KD's best coasters.

Well its not really that shocking if it does happen. Cedar Fair had zero coasters that ran backwards before they took over the paras parks.. And I had even joked around about it in 06 that for 07 they wouldn't run backwards anymore... So I'm really not surprised if they don't keep them backwards (Carowinds and Kings Island too)

This will probably happen before they actually make them race again.

I guess their rankings will drop. My favorite sides of the coaster were the backwards sides after riding the forwards. Will these coasters become as bad as Rolling Thunder?

It's pretty much been confirmed for all 3 racing coasters at the Paramount Parks.
Quote:
We’ve got some bad news today for wood coaster fans. According to Kings Dominion’s John Pagel, both sides of Rebel Yell will be switched to only run forward this season. According to John, “this is consistent with Kings Island and Carowinds for the 2008 season,” confirming the rumored changes to The Racer at Kings Island and Thunder Road at Carowinds.
Bye Bye backwards Racer
CF is really starting to piss me off with the changes they are making to the Paramount Parks. I see no reason to turn the trains around, I can't imagine it cost any more money to have a backwards train.

I'm a little angey as well. Whats the big deal about one side going backwards. I can't believe i thought Cedar Fair would do a good job when they bought the Paramount Chain. They have been seriously dissapointing me with everything they have done so far and i feel nothing good will come in the future.

Got me thinking...technically, would anything (except for the ride experience) change about it? I mean turning the train around...wouldn't it provide the same amount of comfort/discomfort. The only different thing is the train is now reversed forward.

This is a shame. Thunder Road at Carowinds on the backwards side was insane for me. I lost my stomach on literally every single drop of the ride. Going forward was nothing special for me

Racer, Thunder Road, and Rebel Yell were some of my favorite wooden coasters because of their backwards option. I guess it won't be that way anymore.

and let me add missing for two years a dueling shuttle that had an incredible inline twist in reverse.

I've ridden Rebel Yell backwards and it's pretty fun. But this news is nothing to get super upset over. Some of you guys are really over-reacting with all of this Cedar Fair bashing. It's not like they announced that they were removing it, altering the structure/track, or shutting down on of the two sides completely. Take a breather. Geez.

I do not like this decision at all. The backwards side of Rebel Yell was worlds better than the forwards side. What would drive them to make this stupid decision?

The ride is still going to be around yes, but more ordinary. The racing part will need to be played up. I really lucked out for a lot of lasts at Kings Island in 2007 before all this change.

Rebel Yell/Racer are coasters where you can't call the GP out for asking in the future "Didn't this wooden coaster go backwards?" in the "Stupid Things..." thread.

Lightning Racer really kicks it in racing.

If they will race the trains, then I won't be too upset. It will be kinda fun to really be able to face the same way again.

The race would seem more fair with both sides forward.

It is a big deal. The backwards side of Rebel Yell was consistently easily one of my top 2 or 3 coasters in the park every season. It was a really really great coaster, now it will probably be as good as the forward side, which really sucks when you get down to it. A rough, boring out and back coaster with no airtime, o joy, now KD has TWO of them. right next to each other. They probably still won't even bother racing them either.

Really, really sucks. Booo cedar fair. I'm extremely unhappy about this...

My only problem with this is the trains don't even finish next to each other, they're on opposite sides of the lift structure.

Seems really unnecessary.

Well maybe some of us really liked the fact that you could ride the coaster backwards... maybe some of us only rode the backwards side and didnt waste time on the 'lame' frontward side... Maybe some of us go to KD every summer and dont even take a pity-ride on the frontward side... because going backwards is just that much better.

Oh.. and I've been a Fair-Hater before the parasale

In the last 6 times I've gone to KD I only rode frontward once... Where as I rode backwards each trip. And at Great America.. .I liked the backwards eagle soooo much more than the frontward side.. Going down the first drop backwards was amazing (and much taller than the para-racers). But saldy that has also been turned back around

^^ They finish right beside each other. This is Thunder Road, but it's the same setup for RY isn't it?

Having one side go backwards made it more than just an average racer. I don't see why CF had to do this. They could have at least had both sides go backwards

^^ I meant to say that on the final brakes when the trains come to a stop, they're not really in a good "racing" type set up like Lightning Racer @ HP or something since they're on different sides of the lifts. Even if they "race" the coasters I don't think it would really add enough to the ride to make up for taking away the backwards side.

I'm with James, I get a season pass to KD every season and make loads of trips to the park, but normally only went on the forward side of RY once or twice because it was never that great. Backwards, however, I rode at least once or twice every single trip. It was just significantly better.

Thunderation at SDC has the option to sit either forwards or backwards on the same train. I don't know if you count that, but I must say that the backwards seats are much more fun on Thunderation

I can't say I am surprised, this is a company that goes way overboard with safety with added seatbelts, trims all over stupid policies (no re-rides, you can't secure your own latch on an Enterprise car etc.).

I never rode Rebel Yell backwards but I don't think I would have liked it but it's a shame for those that did.

Screamscape sources tell us that during “training” at the Kings Dominion this past week Rebel Yell was spotted running two forward facing trains and actually timing them out to “race”.

Grrrr.... Next they'll add trims to Grizzly or something. At that point, I stop going to the park.

Maybe they really want to race it. They get some attention by re-newing the racing idea. It might work, Cedar Fair is usually good with running their rides in an orderly way.

I don't see why people are even making a big deal about this, like it's really going to impede on your park trip that much. You can rationalize this, it's just some old wooden coaster that they are cleaning up. And would you be upset if the day you went to the park, one of these wooden coasters was closed? If anything you will have more time riding some more fun and intense rides because you won't feel compelled to go on a ride that's essentially a gimmick.

So you need to have both trains frontward to race? Cause I've been on all 3 para-racers (and AE) when the raced and has backwards trains.

And also.. I've been on Gemini with both sides open without it racing.. And also when just one side is open.

I just don't see turning the trains around on all the paracoasters will make them race. Unless Cedar Fair ad's one operators panel to these rides i'll bet they will race about as much as they did in years past.
