SFKK Chang to move to SFGAM?!

Screamscape posted a rumor that SFKK's Chang might move to SFGAM to replace Iron Wolf as a 50th anniversary present in 2011. It's one of the most wacky rumors I've heard. I've heard about SFKK expanding the waterpark for the 2011 season but I thought it would involve removing, hopefully by excavator claw, T2.

Why would SFGAm want Chang?

If this is true, then next thing you know, Kingda Ka will be replacing S:TE at SFMM and Great Adventure will get the dismantled SLC sitting at the Great Escape.

I don't see this happening.

Why? For a few reasons, I'll throw out...

1. There's absolutely nothing wrong mechanically with Iron Wolf (that we know of) for it to be removed and be replaced with the exact same style of ride (albeit much larger).

2. Chang's footprint and layout is significantly larger than Iron Wolf's. It's not going to fit in that particular location.

3. Rumors will be rumors.

--------

However, one reason I see it being likely (and not a very good one at that)...when Great America dismantled ShockWave, they left a hole for a large looping roller coaster operating within its fences. Chang could possibly fill that void. Although I find it more likely and believable if rumors were saying Magic Mountain's Scream! is to be relocated to Great America.

^Superman: Ultimate Flight took the spot of the former Shockwave. There is some room in the general area but not nearly enough for Chang or any other current looping B&M of that size. With some clever planning, it might be possible to fit some coaster around S:UF but even then I doubt it.

As for the rumor, it's a dumb one. Iron Wolf isn't that popular anymore and most people don't like it. So I wouldn't be surprised to see it removed sometime. Although I can't see it replaced with another standup which aren't popular at all today.

And how sad would it be if it were true that one of Six Flags biggest parks in one of the biggest metro areas with not only Chicago nearby but Milwaukee not very far either. The thought of them receiving a used standup coaster as a "gift" for Six Flags 50th is silly. The park has gone into a major coaster/ride droubt since S:UF back in 2003. I'd hope they'd get something better than that after seven or eight years.

Why relocated? Why an eleven year old standup coaster when the first ever standup is about to turn twenty?

Great America should get something exciting, along the lines of Maverick and bluefire. But with only a rumor of relocation from another Six Flags park, lets hope it's better than another standup.

There is no reason why Chang would only use the inside the current footprint of Iron Wolf. It could go over the train tracks and use area back there as well and it could even expand and use the surrounding areas on the park side of the track that are not currently in use.

Fact of the matter is that Chang is being removed from SFKK and their waterpark is being expanded. Don't be surprised when you hear this isn't the only ride that is departing from SFKK.

However if you guys up in Chicago don't want Chang, we'll take it in the 'Lou.
===

Sad part is, now there will not be a reason to even visit SFKK (for me) anymore.

Ditto. I returned thinking this year I could always count on Chang and then ride an oldie but goodie like Greased Lightinin. Chang was the anchor of my interest only for that park. I think Chang is underutilized probably and definitely under themed as if Cedar Fair done the work. Chang seems more worthy of the big market parks like SFMM, which already has Riddler's Revenge, and SFGAM. Let's really put that MCBR to good use. In accepting if Chang would go to SFGAM I would be excited over using the Shockwave moniker again. "Shockwave - Can you stand it?" I thought that was the tag line when it was at SFMM (Intamin pre B&M standup that sits in a pile at Darien Lake). Shockwave came over from SFMM to SFGADV. Shockwave (Arrow multi inversion) left SFGAM but it would be quite cool if "lightning strikes twice." Maybe you should copyright that Cedar Fair? lol. SFGAM still hasn't got that multi inversion floorless coaster. This standup could fill in that modern coaster inversion void.

Heck, I'll gladly take either Iron Wolf or Chang in my home park! We could use a stand-up coaster in my state.

Great America doesn't have a floorless coaster. SF could rather easily buy three new floorless trains (or sit down trains ) from B&M and stick them on Chang when it's moved to SFGAm. At this point I could almost see it becoming another Bizzaro themed coaster.

We already had the discussion about that conversion. The ride was designed with the location of the riders' hearts which would be higher on a standup train than on a floorless train. It might be too far from what the standup layout was engineered to do. Well B&M would at best hold the cards on that call on the possibility of a conversion.

Not to mention the whole having to install the components for a floorless train in the station

Iron Wolf should go to the Great Escape.

I think you misread what I said and interpreted it literally. What I meant was that by removing ShockWave, they no longer have a large looping roller coaster inside the park; and by taking in Chang, it would fill the void of the park not having a large looping coaster.

Iron Wolf going to Great Escape would probably be way better than setting up a SLC. I haven't been on Iron Wolf yet but I'd take it.

Why on Earth would SFKK get rid of the only decent coaster they have?

We all thought the same thing when (Paramount's) Great America dumped their biggest and most popular ride, Stealth, for that Boomerang Bay waterpark.

Looks like history is going to repeat itself, just farther East.

The first standup in the United States was 25 years ago.

I see what you mean now. Although removing Deja Vu didn't help matters there either. They went from being one of the parks with the most inversions to one of the least among bigger parks. At one point, I think they had over 20 inversions if you rode each coaster (Shockwave 7, Deja Vu 6*, Batman 5, Demon 4, Iron Wolf 2) and now they removed the two rides with the most inversions.

Deja Vu of course was a boomerang and only featured three track inversions but by design, inverted you six times

As for why I was confused as to what you meant, you had been talking about footprint so I was thinking about that. So when you said about the void with Shockwave gone, I was still thinking about space. My mistake.

Ok, where's proof that Chang is leaving SFKK?

That is probably one of the stupidest ideas I've ever seen in the amusement industry if it is true. Chang is quite decently reliable (from what I hear) and is obviously the most popular ride in the park. That's like taking RoS away from Darien Lake and giving it to Dorney Park to replace Steel Force: Absolutely no need, and it won't fit anyway. Guests will see it as virtually the same ride, resulting in a VERY small increment of guests, and the "donor" park will lose it's star attraction, pretty much dooming the whole park to the scrap yard.

It seemed like an offseason kind of rumor to get us through the months but it came out now.

I have only been to SFKK once and it was this summer. The whole time I was in line I heard the most buzz about Chang. "I gotta go ride Chang," "Chang is the best lets go ride it," " I'm not leaving till I ride Chang I don't care how long the line is." If they get rid of Chang I think it is a virtual death sentence for the park. They should get rid of T2 (very rough ride IMO) and expand the water park that direction. I think they should even include Penguins Blizzard River in the water park because I have never been on a rampage ride that has boats holding so much water. I was literally sitting in water towards the end of the ride. That's what I think they should do for what its worth.

Basically I listened to you and DHollon on Penguins Blizzard River. This summer I tested it and it really does live up to the word. It's a great water ride.

I already envision the new theme of this coaster. I imagined a big "O" on the nose of a refurbished standup train. The Big O coaster will have cutouts along the themed queue line outlining the President's life. There was already a ride about Evel Knievel. Chicago could eat this up.

Oh I get it -- it will be themed to his approval ratings and how they keep plummiting because he can't deliver on his "promises"

Ok I'm done - this is why politics do no belong on coaster forums.
