| sfmm a dirty park?
well i work at sfmm and are number one priorty is to keep the park clean. we do the best we can. and to me the park looks as clean as it can get.the only areas that are dirty are the restricted areas (meaning fenced off unsafe areas)but alot of you guys still call it a dirty park.and should we be blaming the park or the guest for it being dirty? i blame the guest Last edited by xtreme; 09-03-2005 at 03:57 AM. |

Basically the guest are the main problem in keeping a park clean. I mean if you work there as a sweeper or something along the lines of that, you definatly aren't going to get the park dirty yourself. People these days are lazy. They throw stuff on the ground instead of putting it in a trashcan five feet away. They'll leave stuff sitting there. Nasty. Also, vandilism i'm sure is a problem. Scratching away roller coaster supports paint with coins and what not. Famous gum alleys and what not. Ya know, the usuals. A clean park is nice and important, but safety should be #1. |

I agree, The guest is the major problem why it's so dirty. I'm sure the grounds crews do an awesome job keeping it clean. It might be different now, i haven't been in 7 years.

If you do allot of cleaning, then in a sense some people can preceive it to be dirty. I used to pick up trash going to work, have the day, swing and night crews sweep before arriving, breaking and leaving, and perform special cleaning projects when extra staff was available or during legnthy shutdowns of a ride. I used to wonder how people can preceive a park to be dirty. Then I realized that in order for there to be that much to clean, the guests saw the park dirty inbetween cleanings. So it is the guest's fault that it becomes dirty and the park's fault if it remains dirty. The dirtiest queue I encountered this season was SFGAdv's Congo Rapids. Previous dirty lines I encountered were Nitro and Chiller in Fright Fest times, Rolling Thunder in 2002, GASM in 2001, Freefall in 2000 and Skull Mountain in 1999.

When I visited SFMM last year the park was about so-so. One thing that I did notice was trash in the water by Revolution. That really made it look dirty, but overall the park wasn't bad with respect to cleanliness.

I often see people throwing away stuff on the ground, but when I walked at the Efteling amusement park last Friday, I thought it was clean. Maybe that's because they have so many trash cans everywhere. I can't judge SFMM, but in general, it's the guest that makes a park dirty and it has to be the personnel that does the great job of removing other people's garbage. I myself always put my garbage in the trash can, because I hate people dropping their stuff in random places...

I can't speak for SFMM, but a parks cleanliness is not only judged on how much trash is on the ground. I judge it also on how the paint looks. If there are too many rusting or peeling spots then the place is dirty. Not just on coasters either. Fresh cleanly painted buildings and signs go a long way to making a park look clean. Also, Landscaping. If the Flower beds and the trees and bushes are in poor shape the park looks dirty. If the Railroad ties (or whatever) around the landsaping is falling apart the park looks dirty. Cobwebs are also a problem in parks. When I see that I think the park doesn't care. Bottom line: "Cleanliness" isn't just sweeping and trashcans. |

well six flags magic mountian is in season all year.you cant just go paint x at any time you want.let me put you in a position what if you came across the country to sfmm to ride the coasters but you wanted to ride x the most.and there a worker in front of x entrance and says."sorry for the iconvenence at this time x is being painted"no why would you do that.all the buildings and signs are painted.and also flowers are destroyed by the guest trash is left by the guest so please if anything do not blame the workers. the ratio between workers and guest are 1 worker for every 150 guest |

Thats why i think SFMM needs to have an off-season. They need some closed time to work on the park and make upgrades and changes.

Guests are dirty everywhere. That should not be an excuse that a park uses for haveing a dirty park. SFMM may not have an off season, but they do have a season where they are only open on the weekends. Plenty of time during the week to get stuff done. I never said to paint a coaster in 4 days, but in the slow season you can get a lot done in 4 day chunks.
Thats A Restricted Area
Restricted area or not, it's still part of the park. It just depends on what kind of people the guests are. Dirty or clean. |

Don't live there now, but I lived near SFMM for several years. Over the years I saw the "cleanliness" factor drop down quite a bit. But most of that isn't trash that the employees can get. It's the overall upkeep of the park. Things like replacing rotting wood in the building fronts and queues. Fresh paint where it's been faded and peeling. Removing graffitti from around the park. Keepin the restrooms clean and fresh. Removing debris from the water and from the planters- meaning it has to be done in off hours. And yes, it can be done since we do it at BGT. The problem is that they've cut so much of the upkeep budget from the park that it no longer keeps up but is steadily declining. And that's just sad.

I won't speak of SFMM since I've never been there but rather guests. I don't understand why some people are so blantantly ignorant and just drop stuff on the ground or throw it in the water, gardens, etc. It's at all parks and I know it's often kids, teenagers and trashy people. Every park I've been to has had a lot of garbage cans throughout the park. There's no reason just to throw it somewhere. Also, I wish parents would teach their kids respect and to throw it in the proper place. That's the problem, it's the parents. I won't make a long post out of it but many parents simply don't teach their kids manners and respect.

/\ Yeah. I witnessed that situation at its greatest at Cedar Point when waiting in line for Mantis. There were a slew of garbage bins throughout the queue, but rather than take advantage of it and be a curteous guest, a lot of people were tossing empty water bottles and other misc. garbage into the pond beneath Mantis. It was disgusting. Countless floating cups, souvenir bottles, maps, eating utensils, soggy napkins, anything you can name that the park sells and that can be discarded was just floating in clusters in the water and washed up on the "shoreline" too.

I agree that guests are filthy everywhere, but I do think SFMM is slightly dirtier than others. I don't think its the park's fault, I think it's just the location. Compare it to, say, CP. CP is in a very cool place (temperature, that is). SFMM is in a sweltering place. It doesn't take much to understand that baking trash is more disgusting than trash that is kept cool. So I guess SFMM isn't really any flithier, it just smells a lot worse.

Don't get me started on Mantis....ok, too late, you already did. A couple years ago, my friend and I were waiting in line for Mantis. Garbage in the water is one thing since that's just a mess, it's another when people are delibrately trying to feed the fish that's in there. A group of girls were throwing stuff at the fish to try and make it catch it to eat. I was getting upset about it and since they were a group I thought I'd throw a penny straight up into the air above them and it would probably hit one of them. I threw it up about 20 feet or so and it came right down on to the main offender's head. It made a nice little smack on her head and she had no idea where it came from. She let out a big ouch and looked upwards. Yeah, it was immature and foolish on my part...but it sure made me feel a lot better. And more importantly she stopped throwing crap at the fish.

^ I see more trash thrown on the ground by parents at BGT than I do from kids. And don't get me started on the cigarette butts... :P

Oh, I believe it. That's why I also said "trashy" people. I didn't want to leave out the adults. Afterall, it's the adults who teach or rather, don't teach their kids any manners.

A couple of things... If the water, specifically the 'stream' outside of the entrance to the ride is a restricted area...why can't the staff clean up outside of the normal operational hours? Is it so restricted that they can't ever go there? If a pond at a park gets dirty, doesn't it get cleaned at some time? Kids do learn from their parents and groups tend to have the same mentality. If one person does it...everyone can do it then. (Regardless whether or not they know one another.) As an enthusiast and a person who was raised like a normal human being, I throw away my trash in the trash can. Why can't everyone else? Cleanliness does include more than just the trash being removed. It's a overall appearance. Trash is just one element. Most folks can tell when a place (theme park, thrill park or neighborhood park) has been kept up.

Well, then people should start expanding their vocabulary when it comes time to describe what needs to be taken care of at the park. When you say "trashy" and "dirty", that's completely different than "they need some new paint here and there." And all I ever here is, "Magic Mountain is so dirty and trashy." Which is hardly close to the truth.

When I visited SFMM recently I didn't think it was dirty at all. The only complaint I have it the huge amount of spider webs and big spiders around. I've seen these so far in the Viper, Goliath, and Scream stations and que lines. Goliath especially had alot. Also there was a 2-foot spiderweb near the scream exit on one of the lamps. Cleaning up the spider webs seems like something that's easy and would make a big difference in the look of the stations and the park. Anyway, besides that, it didn't sem dirty at all. Food was reasonable too. (despite complaints I've heard)

We had to knock down spider webs CONSTANTLY at Cedar Point. What could look like months of neglect could actually be only two days with the webs at CP. It's a nightmare, but VERY easy work. Doesnt' take long. Just needs to get done.
