| | | Magic Mountain to open new roller coaster in 2009 After removing two dated roller coasters in two years, Six Flags Magic Mountain plans to introduce a new roller coaster in 2009. This brings their count back up to 16.
Though it has not been made clear whether it will be made of steel or wood --- the ride will have a minimum height requirement of 48" which will make it family-friendly...a departure from some of the most recent installations they've made which required all riders to be 54" or taller.
Mark Shapiro noted that the coaster will be "more his style" -- which is an incredibly vague statement.
Magic Mountain management confirmed that the new coaster will not have any inversions and it will WILL NOT be a Tony Hawk Big Spin spinning coaster or a The Dark Knight enclosed coaster.
The park has already chosen the site for where the roller coaster will go, but chose not to disclose that information yet.

| | | It will probably be the same layout as either tony hawk or Dark Knight, just with a different theme.

| | ^ What would be the point of doing that?
The selling point of those two coasters (Tony Hawk and The Dark Knight) is not the coaster itself, but the pop-culture branding on it.
Why would they take away the biggest selling point of those rides?
Let me quote the article again, because the echo just wasn't loud enough in this room I guess. Quote: |
Despite rampant speculation, the themed coaster will not be a rotating Tony Hawk’s Big Spin or an indoor Dark Knight, according to officials at the Valencia amusement park.
| My personal hunch on what it could possibly be is probably an Evel Knieval clone. |

| | | I'm suprised the park is announcing a family coaster this early. I wonder it it will be a used ride or a new one.

My personal hunch on what it could possibly be is probably an Evel Knieval clone. | Exactly, which is why they will save money by not making a new layout (or at least will keep the same type of ride, mouse of some form), and will just slap some other random pop culture theming onto it that won't hold up 5 years down the road.
And the article says it won't be an indoor DK or a rotating TH clone, but it does not say that it won't be an indoor or rotating coaster themed to something else.

It was just a joke. We all know SF doesnt own the SFNO mouse anyways. Quote:

| | | It can't be Evel Kneviel? A new wooden coaster to erase the terrible memory that is Pscyclone? Not so family friendly but I selfishly want it for SFMM. I guess I'll slowly but surely give in to family friendly. The park could use it, particularly with Knott's going family friendly the last two years.

| | | I remember seeing Mr. Shapiro take a front-seat ride on El Toro when I visited Gadv in 2006.
I'm sure it made a good impression, but I would hardly call El Toro family friendly! It's probably the most intense coaster in the park next to Kingda Ka. |

I don't think people understand Shapiro's style. I'm not claiming to be in his head, but it seems that he likes the coasters that attract all members of the family, not just the older ones. It doesn't matter if it suits our tastes, as long as it can please the whole family. And despite its thrilling awesomeness, El Toro falls right into the family friendly category. A less threatening looking wooden coaster is fun for everyone. And still kicks ass.
All I'm saying is, as long as it appeals to the whole family, such as El Toro or a GCII, and the height restriction isn't high, then the whole family can ride it, and looking at the success rate, that would be good enough for Shapiro, and good for us as well.

| | | Hmm there aren't too many options as to what it could be, that is, if they're looking for a non-inverting family coaster. A spinner, wild mouse, lower scale woodie, or possibly even (but doubtfully) a Zamperla motocoaster.
Then again, if Shapiro likes big drops...but then again we're focusing on families...right?

| | | If Hurricane Harbor doesn't gobble the Flashback land could a Tony Hawk layout fit there?
A wooden coaster in the back would help me forget Deja Vu if the earth suddenly swallowed it up. I wouldn't mind keeping Deja Vu as well but in case something does happen.

| | | ^ There is a very good chance the Wiggles World themed area will be occupying the former Flashback footprint.
Management mentioned that along with the new coaster next season, Wiggles World is being considered for 2009 as well.
It would make the most sense this way considering there are noise issues with building loud attractions directly adjacent to Hurricane Harbor (the main reason why Flashback used to be closed months out of the year). A childrens' ride area would not generate much noise pollution as opposed to a roller coaster. | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
