How will CP pass on the new parking tax?

How do you think CP will pass on the parking tax imposed by Sandusky.

They're going to do exactly what any other business would do, to pass it on to the consumer.

I agree with GP and I pity Cedar Point.

They'll be alright. Almost all the money they make from parking is profit (low overhead). I don't think it's going to impact the park much, even if it seems unfair.

Yeah, but Cedar Point is such a huge contributer to the Sandusky economy. It's too bad that they have to take a direct hit like this...you're right though, it probably won't have too much impact.

However if they raise parking prices by $1 dollar for guests. That's one less dollar each person/car load has to spend in the park. This could add up in the long run.

In theory, they'll pass it on according to the incidence of the tax... in other words, appropriate to the demand for parking at/near the park. If demand for parking is relatively elastic, then CP will take most of the hit from the tax. If parking is inelastic (which I would assume it to be), then it will indeed be the consumers who get shafted.

$.64, big deal.

Steve, if you think having one dollar less to spend in the park is a big deal, remember that CP keeps the money from parking (excluding this tax)

Supposedly, some of the money from the parking goes directly toward funding employee bonuses at the end of there contracted period--at least that is what I was told when I worked there. $.64 isn’t a big deal except that you have to remember that hotels cost $150 a night(and were talking a Motel 6—not a Hyatt) during peak season with food and other amusements—the trip gets real expensive for family’s real quick.

There is no designated fund that feeds employee pay -- bonuses or otherwise.

My guess is that for now, nothing will happen as Cedar Point initiates legal action against the tax. However, if the tax holds, then I'd say parking costs will probably increase by $1 *IF* the tax is not incremental to the cost of the parking. If it's an incremental tax (dependent on how much they take in), then it won't matter and likely the cost of parking will remain the same.

I do not believe they'd cause parking attendents to make change -- already the traffic can back up for miles along the causeway, through the city, and even to the turnpike -- making change will only make everything go longer, and needlessly complicate matters. For example: what about the booth / attendent that runs out of change; now you have to wait longer and so forth.

Remember, Cedar Point does not keep every penny from parking as it is (causeway tolls and so forth), and they maintain their own parking facilities -- both for guests and employees -- without city expenditure.

Heck, I drop more than 64 cents in change every time I ride Raptor. Maybe, they'll just comb the grounds a little more.

I don't really think it will have an impact on things one way or the other. I really don't see why the park is rasing such a stink about it.

Parking revenues are almost all profit, even when you figure in the causeway toll and maintenance. Those costs are so miniscule (per vehicle) that it becomes a lucrative money making scheme. the park could almost assuredly afford to eat it, but they'll probably pass it along to the consumer.

Try and give money back to the city when you aren't visiting the park. maybe then you will feel less guilty.

I do that all the time. I go to McDs after CP for my meal for the ride home. I spend money in Sandusky in the offseason. Sandusky just got hit with the wrong type of business.

Honestly, I think they'll end up doing what most parks would do in a case like this- add it on to the parking charge and blame the increase in parking cost on the new tax. They're not going to lose any of their bottom line or profit when they can make someone else look like the bad guy there while making something off of it.

Once the whole process is done, dont be shocked when the price of crossing/ parking goes up.

CP_Mark Sandusky would be just another speck on the map if CP wasn't there. Let's face it--it would be a ghost town--just like it is in the winter--if CP wasn't there.

Cut the price in half and use your parking pass twice. The ticket says it's good for two entries onto the point so use it twice and save money.

Cedarpoint counts on the fact that every 8 dollars collected goes to them or already existing taxes (if there are any). If they don't increase the fees, that is going to require a major budget adjustment. .64 cents does not seem like a lot to one person, but mutliply it over the course of the season and the number of guests that pay it. It is a hit for CP if they don't raise the parking fee.

If they do raise the parking fee, they will make additional money, but they still loose the $.64. Either way, it's a loss for CP. I can understand why a huge business would get upset over something like this.

This example is rather corny, but remember the scheme in the movie Office Space? It involved pennies, but amounted to millions.

This Message is from Janice Witherow PR at CP, They do want our support on this issue and we can make a difference. In the long run we are the ones that are going to suffer with this tax, Also it may only be .64 cent but we pay a causeway tax and tax on each ticket to the park. Sandusky is getting greedy! Remember who built SANDUSKY, CEDAR POINT.

Hi Sean,
Thank you very much! We appreciate the support on this issue. Thanks for letting me know that you forwarded this on to the City.

Hope all is well with you. Things here are so busy -- this new coaster is going to be quite something, and media from all over the world are calling with requests!

See you this summer, Janice

Well we have our answer; they aren't raising the price just yet. I think if they do take this to court it would look good on CP not to raise the fee--to show that they oppose it. I also think that they are doing everything to avoid any possible bad press with the new coaster. This should be a banner year with CP with no new coasters to top TTD as of yet.

Sounds more to me like they're already laying the groundwork for increasing the fee to park/ cross the causeway and blame it on Sandusky.

"We have to raise the price $1 to cover the .64 that they're charging us (while we pocket the other .36 but we're not going to say that)"
