| Is baseball or basketball more American?
Okay, NWcoaster-rider and I are having this argument about whether baseball or basketball is more American. I say baseball. He says basketball. What do you say? BTW, it is baseball, not basketball, that is called the Great American Pastime.

I'll put in my two cents, basketball originated in Massachusetts by a Caucasian YMCA instructor who wanted a sport to play in the winter, so he strapped a peach basket to a wall and invented a sport. Basketball is SO American it's scary

Yeah, but he based it on a game that the Incas and Myans used to play....native Americans(as in North and South America). Therefore, its WAY "American". If my memory serves me though, baseball was first played during the Civil War...also very American. However, it is just an altered version of cricket (a profoundly British game). But, which one gets played the most on the weekend, making it an actual past-time? I say Golf (so what if its Scottish, give me my putt-putt!).

Basketball is popular all over the world. Baseball isn't. I say baseball.

I think football (american style) should be the "American Past-time". Sure, it's a variation on rugby, but that is by far the most popular sport in the states, and the game itself is american. Not enough people pay attention to basketball, but then again, the last Word Series had the worst ratings ever! Hockey is an american game - north american.

Baseball. The NBA is filled with palyers from all across the world now and baseball seems only to have players from the Americas for the most part.

I say baseball. It is known as the American past time. Although, it is starting to grow over seas (Japan). Although, I like watching or playing a basketball game a lot more than playing baseball.

I voted baseball, but I'm a little bias since that's what I play.

*grumble grumble grumble* lol. Anyway, baseball's beginning to be dominated by foreigners too. Ichiro, Godzilla, Kazoo just to name a couple just in the A.L. Granted there are lots of foreigners in basketball too, but it was founded in America :'(. lol. Again, baseball may have gradually transcended from cricket in to what it is now, whereas basketball was just INVENTED on the spot, I don't think James Naismith got any inspiration from Native Americans. Just my opinion though

Baseball was the American sport in the 1920s, 1930s...Basketball is more the American sport now, although I think neither really are because I think football is now the American sport.
Originally posted by Fastardo Basketball is popular all over the world. Baseball isn't. I say baseball.
not so fast...basketball, while much more popular in European countries, is not the most popular most other places (granted there are a minority few basketball players from Africa)... BUT baseball is much much much more popular in central and latin america, and is second only to soccer there, and the japanese also have a great fascination with baseball and it is growing rapidly there (seen by Ichirio, Hideki Matsui, Seattle Mariners owned by Japanese man who lives in Japan) ...youll see a much larger percentage of baseball players are from foreign countires than basketball players.... HOWEVER baseball is America's pasttime... just go to Wrigley or Fenway for a game, then go to any NBA game...youll see the difference... Baseball has Ruth, Cobb, Mays Basketball has ....Kareem Abdul Jabbar? Wilt Chamberlain? obviously MJ but none of those players have half of the legacy baseball greats do.... SO IF YOU READ THIS FAR THE ANSWER IS BASEBALL

Baseball is more "american", but neither of them ACTUALLY was 100% American. I live near Springfield, the birthplace of basketball. They have a huge history of basketball, they even have an original peach basket. But it was somewhat based on an ancient mayan (maybe incan) game. Baseball was based on Rounders, a British game where you would get the person out by throwing the ball at them. The answer is baseball, because it is part of american history and it is mostly played just in the US. I hate sports.

ARE YOU HIGH?????? ok lets start with orgins...racecar driving and professional racing started in europe and was much more popular long before it hit the US. and where do you think the cars are made? over half of all nascar cars are european! at least baseball players hit w/ louisville sluggers and catch with wilson or rawlings gloves or whatever....how many companies that make baseballs or basketballs are based outside of the US? and come on its racing. nascar drivers dont go on strike for money because they are paid mostly by how they finish as opposed to a contract for the year...who would they strike against? the money is high enough that the only reason to strike is if you finish last every race and cant live off that... and last of all how can you have a favorite team that doesnt even exist yet! yes, its perfectly fine to like teams from your part of the country... i encourage that...but your favorite team should be not just b/c its the only one in your city, but b/c you like the players, ownership, stadium, etc. That and its racing! Its not american. at all. and to say its more american that baseball or basketball is embarassing....

Look at it this way. A basketball player emerges as one of the best in their respective country, what do they waqnt to do? Come here! If basketball wasn't American, Emanuel Ginobili would be in Argentina and Yao Ming would be in China!

My vote goes to baseball. It has more tradition, and it is so different from other sports. It also seems to have a more relaxed atmosphere than basketball games. I think football is the new American past time though.

Can't compare sports like Nascar, PBA (bowling) golf and tennis to those like Hockey, Football, baseball and hoops because all those are individual sports where if they don't perform, they don't get paid as much. In the NHL, NBA, NFL and MLB you get paid for riding the bench, injured or not. Second, Baseball is also popular in Australia, I don't know if that was mentioned. The one thing I like about baseball is how inconsistent it can be. YOu can suck the previous season (ahem Detroit) get some draft picks, but yet you have to wait for them to develop and sometimes you trade them away before they even make it to the big time. NHL is the same way because of the lower divisions like the IHL and ECHL to further develop future NHL players. NBA and NFL don't seem to have that deep of development programs that NHL and MLB do. I understand the NBA has a developmental league but you rarely see anyone come from there to play. ----------------------------------------- Basically, baseball IS and will forever BE the national pasttime.

Stop! Okay, few points here. 1. What does it mean to be more American? America is a mix of many different cultures and races, the "Americans" are the Native Americans. So if you think a "American" invented the game, or originated it, then most likley it really isn't American. It's a game made up by people of many different races and cultures, so it really isn't American in this case. Thats my two cents on "American" 2. Baseball I really never understand, I find it as a boring sport and I don't really know the history of, so don't ask me. 3. Basketball has evolved into a sport related to rap music (to me). I hate rap music, and all those stupid terms, like "Ballin'" "Shot Callin" So I don't like basketball, that much either. It is fun to play, but it has eveolved into something different IMO. 4. Baseketball......THE BEST....Sport. Period.
