PDA's, Handheld Computers, Smartphones, etc.

Does anybody else have a PDA? I have an m515 and it works wonders for me.

Um, I almost got a PDA a few years back but then I realized that I didn't really need it that much so I got a new camera instead.

Palm came out with three new models today but since I got a new PDA a month ago I'm not going to buy one.

I have a Handspring Visor Deluxe, and so does my dad. I actually keep a coaster count db on mine as well as other things.

My dad just got my mom a Palm m130 (wow, color screen), and I spent a good part of the afternoon trying to get the Palm's cradle and my dad's Handspring's cradle to coexist and hotsync correctly (apparently, it's not supported, and there is no documentation on the Internet to do it). It was fun nevertheless.

Make sure the HotSync manager is open, both USB and Serial(if the Handspring uses it) are checked. If you still can't get it to work, head over to the Brighthand forums ( discussion.brighthand.com/palmhandhelds ) and look through topics, there are at least 10-15 of them.

I did get it to work, but it was crazy (both cradles are USB by the way). I could do both of the same brand alright, and I could do one with Palm and one with PocketPC, but this was the first with two different brands (yet the same type of OS). The problem was with the fact that each brand (Handspring, Sony, Palm) have their own versions of Hotsync and Palm Desktop. I ended up using Palm's and installing it in a new location (while it copied everything from the old installation), and everything seems to be good after doing a lot of tests.

heres my history of palms/organizers/laptops/etc:

first i had the sharp wizard oz 770. that was pretty cool but that was also like 4 years ago.
then i got a diamond mako which was really awesome for the price of $99 i got it for.
then i got an HP jornada 470...32 mb, color screen, mp3 player, etc
and finally, what im typing on right now, i have the compaq 905us laptop.

each time i got a new thing i sold the previous thing on ebay.

Technically this is a Poll, so off we go to the correct forum...

I'll second that train of thought... I have no PDA, no cell phone even, no handheld, etc. Quite frankly, 95% of the people who have such devices are deluding themselves that they're really that important (either the person or the device). Funny how pen and paper, tossed in with common courtesy and a bit of thought work just as well.

you guys (raptordude and melissa) dont know what people (or at least teens like me) really use them for. do you think i actually wrote down my homework and actually used the organizer functions on them? heck no. before i bought them, i made sure there were plenty of games available for it so i wouldnt be bored during class. but i finally realized they were a waste of money so i bought a laptop which is well worth the $950 i spent on it.

Sfgadvking? are you inferring that I don't know how to end classroom boredom? Texas Instruments Ti 83 Graphing Calculater .

I am just so sick of teens that have these PDA's with all their friends numbers in them so you can call your friends, and talk about sensless crap, that doesn't matter at all. All these things in my age era are all for show, you don't need them at all. I have a Cell Phone, but I use it when I call my mom, then I turn it off. I don't use at something for my "peeps" to call me at. That's just stupid. Don't get me started on Cell Phones. PDA's are pointless for my age era. Like I said, it's basically a image item.

I wouldn't want a PDA myself, a laptop is much better. In my opinion, no way to say you're stuck up better then pulling out a PDA in the middle of class (someone did this in my Latin class today and I had the inexplicable urge to hit him). Cell phones can pretty much do most, if not all, of what PDAs can, plus extra things. Besides, about 70% of us have them in Santa Barbara, so there's no need to feel superior about owning one. As for beating classroom boredom........forget the TI-83, cell phones are much better.

Yes, but do laptops fit in your pocket? That's what I thought.

WHY would you put it in your pcket, Number one they are as breakable as thinn glass and number two, half of them are to big anyway. My cell dose more than most PDAs.

I don't like lugging around an 8-12 pound laptop everywhere I go. Which is why I don't own one.

Here's all that I do with just my PDA...

Schedule multiple appointments/events that I have to be to (classes, etc.)
Phone/Address book complete with e-mail addys as well
Database program that handles my grocery list as well as my coaster count
To Do List
Calculator w/ some scientific functions
Notepad to jot down notes
Various games

To top it off, I have 8 megs of memory to hold that (and I'm only using a meg for programs and data now).

Plus, I can hold it like a small notepad. Can you do that with a laptop?

Another reason I got the PDA was because my paper planner no longer cut it. It got to the point where I had notes sticking out in every fashion for everything. But I do have a hard case for mine, which is an excellent safeguard against breaking, which means it can stay in my pocket .

Basically, it does what I need, and it's smaller than either a laptop or a planner.

Ok, #1 You can get a hard case and #2 Palm's are ALOT smaller than you must think. I put mine in my pocket all the time and I still have room for a foldable keyboard. You, my friend, are judging a book by its cover.
