One of my friends from Utah made fun of me for calling pop, "pop". He claims there's no such thing as "pop", only "soda". In the south, everything is "coke" (regular, diet, or clear). So what term do you use when referring to carbonated beverages? Pop, soda, coke, or other? |

Being a Californian... We know it by one name: soda. What is this "pop" you speak of?

I call it a soda. I never called it Pop. Or I just call it by the beverage I am getting.

I grew up calling it pop. I once asked for a Jack&Coke and got Jack&RC instead (red-neck bar). Soda, to me, is soda water. No coloration and a flatt-ish taste to it. Coke is coke.

Believe it or not, there is a webpage somewhere with this exact debate. Pop vs. Soda. My home state is West Virginia. It's always been pop, always will be pop and I'll raise my kids to say pop.

I call it pop, but soda is fine too. JUST DON"T CALL IT COKE. Coke is a brand name. I hate it when i go down south and i say i'll have coke and they are like what kind. Pop or soda is what it is coke is a brand name just like pepsi, Dr. Pepper, and mountain dew are

I call everything Coke. I hate pop or soda, doesn't sound right. Although, if I were to go by soda or pop, it'd definately be soda. Normally I just say what I want, but if I'm going to call it anything, I call it Coke. And cedarpointfreak, I guess you don't ask for kleenex's (sp?) then, since that's a brand name too.

Everything is a Coke in New Orleans. Pepsi is Coke. Orange Crush is Orange Coke. The correct term is soda, however. |

I call it soda. But I like to confuse people by saying "What flavors of pop do you have?"

The tough one is "Q-Tips" since there is no apparent competition outside of store-brands. In that case it would be acceptable to them "Q-Tips"

usally we just call it fizzy drink, sometimes restaurants call it soft-drinks but that is considered very american which some people don't like (older people have this idea american-english is taking over "proper" english. I don't think that at all.)

I say "I am going to go get a soda" because if I say "coke" they may get confused with the actual "coke-a-cola." On a side note, the main headquarters for coke is in Atlanta. Also, I dont drink plain coke-a-cola. I like cherry coke and vanilla. Also, I like Dr. Pepper, and various other products that people can confuse.

I think "pop" sounds juvenile (just my opinion, folks), and I call it soda. I agree that "coke" is a brand name and should be treated as such. As for the other brand names that have been brought up: QTips: cotton swabs Kleenex: tissues Band Aids: bandages

I do know that Q-Tips are really Cotton Swabs. But seriously, who calls them that? I think it's acceptable enough to call them Q-Tips especially considering the lack of competition. I got one though Melissa...What would you a call Big Mac? (I will personally shoot and kill the first person that starts singing)
Originally posted by theforce In Michigan we call it POP.
That we do, and the further north you go, if you were to order "soda", you could get a wierd look. As Flint Journal columnist Andrew Heller puts it (he's from Escanaba, MI), ordering "soda" can lead to a butt-kicking. Also, soda to me sounds like a yuppie term.

"pop" is a mid-west thing. You can only call it pop in the mid-west. We call it pop in KC. Bandaids=bandaids kleenex=kleenex q-tips=q-tips
