| How High Have You WALKED?
i obviously got this idea from the other thread about the highest buildings. my question, how high have you walked up (or walked down). i dont know if anyone can beat my record, if you can, thats impressive. i've walked UP and DOWN a 1,410 foot mountain. it took a little over an hour to walk up and a little under an hour to walk down. the mountain is called Masada which overlooks the dead sea in israel. its got some very very big history around it and you can either take a cable car up it or walk up the snake path. heres some information on it - http://www.us-israel.org/jsource/Judaism/masada.html i've also walked down the 940 feet of the eiffel tower.

I've probably hiked up a couple thousand feet, I'd say I was up about 7,000 ft. after a ski lift and then hiked up to about the 9 or 10,000 mark.

I walked up some extinct volcano in Arizona. There was another we could have done, but that one was closed off for some reason.

Was it Sunset Crater? I think the highest that I've walked is on the land my mom owns in Colorado. I think it's a little over 9,000 feet. I'll have to ask her to see if she knows. It's so hard to run even 100 meters up there!

Well, SFGadvKing it seems like everyone topped you. But I'll help. I don't think I've walked up and down any more than 200 feet.

I think I win! Because all you fools have tiny mountains. Well, what I have hiked up was from my camp that I go to every summer that is in the sierras at a BASE of 6,200 feet. Then we hiked up about 2,000 feet or so. Not sure how much, but I really liked the hike. I got epic views, and it was fun just exploring stuff!

Well, I've walked up Grouse Mountain, which is about 20mins from Downtown Vancouver. Its about 4,100ft tall (i think). I've also walked up the Stwamis (sp?) Cheif, which is 1,650ft. I've been on the top of Whistler and Blackcomb Mountains in Whilster. The heighest point is 7,494 feet, and the elevation of the town, Whistler is 2,214 feet.

I've been to the top of Pikes Peak.. some 14,000 ft. I beleive... it was amazing up there. Of course I didn't walk all the way from the base to the top, but it was still a pretty far walk from where I started...

i dont think all of you got my question. its not whats the highest altitude you've been at, its how many feet you have walked vertically. all your 14,000 and 8,000 feet stuff, the base of the mountain is probably already thousands of feet above sea level. oh yeah, and when i walked up my 1400 foot mountain, is was about 95 degrees outside

Well, I said I didn't actually walk the 14,000 feet, but it was a pretty long walk up, I'll say it was about 1,000ft considering it took about 15 mins. to get up there. And Pikes Peak is 14,110 feet above the surrounding area... Last edited by coasterz44; 11-02-2003 at 08:03 PM. |

I walked up Grouse mountain in about an hour (probably an 1h 10,20mins), which is 4,100ft, and I walked up the Stawmis Cheif, which is 1,650 (very steep and difficult, and you have to walk back down too). The whislter mountain, I took the 23min Chairlift ride up most of the way, then walked pretty far to the peak.

I don't remember EXACT times... but it was probrably around 15-20 mins.... how is that such an over-exaggeration? It wasn't very steep, it was a path/steps that led you to the top of the mountain, you had to drive up alot of roads to get to that point, and the drive up took a very long time. EDIT: Oh, and while I'm talkin about mountains in Colorado,Here's a pic my uncle took from the top of Quandary Peak... 14,256ft. Oh well, I was worn out, it was a great trip, but 10 days of walking will kill ya, especially when you're used to sitting in front of a computer all day long! lol BTW did you swim/float in the Dead Sea? that was cool. ![]() I have hiked 20miles in the mountains twice in Boy scouts, that's about the farthest I think I've walked/hiked at one time

I climbed Mt. St. Helens back in 1999 (or was it 1998). Initially it was a breeze. As we neared the top and the crater's edge, the ash was so soft that it was like climbing sand dunes at a 90 degree angle. Almost all the climbers struggled greatly to make it the last 200 hundred feet. It was excruciating. I think the elevation was 9,000 or so feet. It was easily a vertical mile climb. Happily, going down was easier. We brought nylon pants with us and rode down the ice caps on our butts half way down. I also climbed Sunset Crater, but it wasn't nearly as tall. Not sure if this counts, but I climbed down the Grand Canyon. So, I guess climbing back up counts. That was pretty much a vertical mile as well.

Impressive ^. I have yet to hike to the bottom of the Grand Canyon. The highest I have ever been is Camp Muir on Mt. Rainier. We drove to Paradise (5000 ft.) and hiked to camp Muir (10,500 ft.) in a period of 3 hours. Elevation change is just over a mile.
