Can you people read?

Discuss books and all that jazz. What are your favorites, what are you reading now, what books did you hate, love, etc?

I'm mega picky with books. But the one book I really liked that a lot of people didn't was "To Kill a Mocking Bird". A lot of people hate it, I personally liked it. It kept me reading and kept me interested, so that wins. I also liked "This Boys Life". But so far, I am absolutley hating "Lord of the Flies".

Books in school are really flip flop. Ones you will like and are classics, and then there are ones that are complete crap and you will want to burn. (farenheit 451......). I've never found any good books that seem good to read other then classics and the well knowns.

Anyone else read the RedWall series? Looks petty messed up, but it is actually interesting.

I actually read all the harry potter books, i thought those were sorta neat. I'm about to start reading Huck Finn in english class. At some point in my life i want to read the Jungle by Upton Sinclair, it looks sweet.

Yes, I can. Right now, I'm reading The Adventures of Huckleberry Fin. It's pretty good, but I've read better. Here's a list of some of my favorites:

Timeline
Cerano de Bergerac
Lost Years of Merlin Series (I've only read the first three)
The Second half of The Scarlet Pimpernel

My least favorites:
The Scarlet Letter
Great Expectations
The Lord of the Flies (I actually burned this book... IM me if you want to see pictures)

I love reading pretty much anything Hemingway writes. I've read almost his entire collection, and right now I'm reading True at First Light by him. It's the last one of his books to be published. His son went through his old memiors of Africa and put it out in '99. Some good stuff.

Anything that English teachers wet themselves over, I usually don't like. Case in point: The Scarlet Letter, and anything by Charles Dickens.

I do really like To Kill A Mockingbird, Farenheit 451, and 1984. As far as more modern stuff, I enjoy reading PJ O'Rourke and Dave Barry.

Oh, and I think John Grisham novels suck too.

I liked that book quite a lot, even though I didn't expect to.

My most recent book was Lance Armstrong's autobiography, which was very good.
Some of my favorites:
- White Noise by Don Delillo
- Clear and Present Danger by Tom Clancy
- A Time to Die & When the Lion Feeds, both by Wilbur Smith
- Jurassic Park, by Michael Crichton
and yes, as cliche as it may sound,
- Lord of the Rings by JRR Tolkien.

I'm an avid reader, and here's some of my favorites.
The Lord of the Rings, J.R.R. Tolkien
Any of the Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling. My favorite is Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix
1984, by George Orwell
The Phantom Tollbooth, by Norton Juster
The Count of Monte Cristo, by Alexander Dumas
Treasure Island, by Robert Louis Stevenson

On the opposite end of the spectrum, some of my least favorites books are...
The House of the Spirits, by Isabel Allende
Great Expectations, by Charles Dickens
The Lord of the Flies
Cannery Row, by John Steinbeck
Moby ****, by Hermen Melville
All Quiet on the Western Front, by Remarche
The Power of One

I might add that all of those least favorites, with the exception of Moby ****, were all books we had to read in school. I hate forced reading. The Scarlet Letter, which we just finished, was really bad too. However, we did start The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, by Mark Twain, and that's shaping up to be a very good book.

EDIT: I know it's a horrible book, but can't you make that censor program a LITTLE more intelligent?

I enjoyed Fahrenheit 451 but I really didn't like To Kill a Mockingbird. It was just realy annoying to me. I got to read The Hobbit for English class, which I am thankful for so I know what happened before the movies. I did not like The Scarlet Letter one bit. I am entertained by the Harry Potter series...

I have read, and own every single Chuck Palahniuk book (Fight Club, Invisible Monsters, Survivor, Choke, Lulaby and Diary)and I love everyone of them dearly. Chuck is one of the greatest wrighters of this generation. I also read a fair amount of Kurt Vonnegut's books as well as Kerouac, Irving Welsh, Burroughs, Hunter S. Tompson and Henry Rollins.

I'm not big on classics, though I did just finish Catcher in the Rye. I can see its importance in literary history...but I can't say it was great. Maybe I'm ignorant...maybe it wasn't meant for me.

I think I have read a few Ann Rule books. Stephen King is the tops. I'm also read books by Tim Allen, Mick Foley, The Rock. I will get Amy Dumas' book when I hit the mall next. I also enjoy reading George Carlin.

This is basically a poll asking what everyone's favorite book is with other things on top of that. I'm moving it to polls. Yes there is an older topic asking what your favorite book is, but it's in the archive, so this one can stay.

My favorite book is The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald. That is followed closely by The Autobiography of Malcolm X.

I am currently not reading anything. I'm not too big on reading.

I normally dont read, but I have read Stephen King and really enjoyed it. It was The Dead Zone. I also read The Stir of Echoes and liked that one to. Mystery books are the only ones ever real interesting to me.

Since everyone else has said it. I'll agree:

The Scarlet Letter sucked!

Let's see...

I just finished Timeline. It was slow until the last quarter of the book, I hope the movie does it justice. The ending isn't a shock, but a little surprsing still.

I'm currently reading Harry Potter - Goblet of Fire (#4) I know I'm behind, I just started reading the Potter books and I'm loving them.

Favorites:

Anything by Mary Higgins Clark, The Lord Of The Rings & The Hobbit, Great Expectations, The Runaway Jury by John Grisham, The Harry Potter Series, any good mystery and the best seller of all time - The Bible.

Top 5:
1. Dracula
2. 1984
3. Brave New World
4. Fight Club (The movie bastardized it).
5. Catcher in the Rye

Honroable mention goes to All Quiet on the Western Front

Worst 5-
5. (i.e. best of the worst 5)- Great Expectations
4. Things Fall Apart
3. Little House on the Prarie
2. The Scarlett Letter
1. The Secret Garden

Also, while it doesn't fit in with any of the above, I love mythology, with a slight preference of the Nordic stuff over the Greek stuff.

Wow, how I hated that book.

As far as school books go...the best I read was probably Mythology, by Edith Hamilton, and a book from sixth grade, Ten Little Indians by Agatha Chrisite. Some of the worst were Great Expectations, The Bean Trees, Walking Across Egypt, and A Seperate Peace.

i've read two books in my whole life.

james and the giant peach
hatchet

i know about alot of other from just sitting in class and the teacher talking about the book we were "supposed" to read. why waste your time reading a book when you can just watch the movie and use some kind of online summary?

Wow, if you can say that about the movie, it must have been a REALLY good book because the movie was AMAZING.

Here are some more good ones now that I've thought about it:

A Seperate Peace
The Outsiders
The Pearl
First four Harry Potter books (I haven't read #5, and I don't plan to. If i decided to read a book, it's not the first one I'd chose.)
Um, was The Giver that really weird book that had something to do with people killing babies that weren't up to this "utopia's" standards? If it was, I liked it. I read it in 6th grade and I don't think anyone else in the whole class liked it, but I did.

I didn't particularly like To Kill A Mockingbird, but I didn't hate it either.

I used to like the mystery books by Joan Lowery Nixon, but I've sort of grown out of her writing as she has a writing style more meant for younger children.

A Seperate Peace sucked. Any positive comments about it are hereby disregarded as insanity.

When I was younger R.L Stine was cool with Goosebumps, and I loved Matt Christopher sports books.
