Greatest Baseball Player Ever?

After today Barry Bonds won his 6th MVP, on ESPN and various other sports discussions people were debating Barry Bonds as the greatest slugger ever. Yes, I nearly broke down in tears. Over 100 years of tradition and people think this man is the greatest player ever. Pitiful.

My vote goes to Willie Mays- he had it all. Fielding, baserunning, hitting for average, homers, all around.

Mays is a much better choice than Bonds. On top of what you mentioned, he had plenty of charisma also.

I'll have to think about it more. I'll edit my post when I come up with it.

all of those choices are good choices. babe ruth is not only one of the best hitters (if not the best) but he was also an amazing pitcher for a few years. he was also just so much more dominating at his time, he hit more homeruns one year than any other team combined. of course he got his 714 homers but he also had a carrer batting avg of .342.

hank aaron of course has the homerun record but he never hit 50 homers in one year.

i wouldnt say ted williams was the best. yeah he batted over .400 but his power numbers didnt compare to the big three (ruth, mays, aaron).

willie mays...same as aaron

i think barry bonds is easily in the top 5 for the best hitters in baseball. hes still getting 45 homeruns at 39 years old and thats in less than 400 at bats. if he plays a few more full seasons, he can easily be the best hitter of all time. he can easily get 100 more homeruns if he stays healthy for 3 more years (only an average of 33 homers a year) and break aarons record. and hes also got the single season record.

in 15 years, i think we could be asking this question about albert pujols. its not often someone starts out strong at such a young age, just wait, he will be a legend.

all in all, i have to say babe ruth is the best baseball player of all time.

id be willing to say bonds is in the top 3 greatest, williams, ruth, and bonds. Its always hard to compare players form different time periods to players now. Competition has changed over the years and many argue its harder to do today what others have done in the past

Exactly. While Bond's statistics alone make him look to be an all-time great, I believe if Babe Ruth or Ted Williams were playing today, they would be over 1,000 HR's career-wise. Willie Mays had to play in two of the hardest stadiums to hit homeruns in of all time: The Polo Grounds in New York (somewhere close to 450 ft. straight away center) and Candlestick in San Francisco. Much harder than Bond's just having fly-balls sail out at PacBell.

if you think that way, babe ruth should be the best. even now, 714 homers and a lifetime average of .342 would be amazing. but think that he played in the 20's and when he hit 60 homers in one year, no other team had 60 homers combined. and not only was a he a pitcher, but he was a great pitcher. he is deffinatly the best.

2. Mays
3. Williams

Willie Mays, the first solid five-tool player. He'd rip apart modern-day pitchers and would have tons of home runs in homer-friendly parks like PacBell, Coors Field and Jacobs Field.

Willie Mays, without a doubt. Bonds doesn't even come close.

I'll go with

1. Mays and Ruth
2. Williams

Bonds would be way down the list. He would probably be around 10.

He'd probably make the top 15 of my list, but not much further. I must say I'm pleased no one has voted for Bonds (although some smart alecky person probably will now for the heck of it).

Ty Cobb was one of the best players. He also had personality!!!

He'd get my vote, so I chose 'other'.
