We decided to do it to further de-emphasize the need for a higher number of posts, but we kept it at 6 months for a custom avatar.

Heh...Just watch out for people trying to spam. This change might be an incentive to post lots of useless and pointless posts.

Well, here's the logic...

You would have to post just around 2.78 posts/day in 6 months to get the avatar. Previously, you would have had to do about 5.6 posts/day. To put it in perspective, my post count is 3.51 posts/day, and since June 14, 2001 (the day I joined what was then Thrillride, which is over 4 years ago), I've posted 5,249 times (as of this post).

To deter the spammers, that's why we kept the time limit at 6 months.

You need to be a member for 6 montha AND has 500 posts to get your own avatar.

Now, just don't spam to get up to 500 posts... do it at a decent pace because the whole purpose behind it is to reward quality and not quantity.
