New Advertising...

Some of you might be seeing some random text highlighted in green with a thick underline (thin double underline in IE). This is not a virus, trojan, or spyware (as some programs like to do very similar things).

We are currently experimenting with in-text advertising, which when you choose to mouse over it, pops a box with the advertising (think like the other text base advertising). Other sites have used similar types, including CNN, Yahoo, Nonags, and cnet.

This is nowhere near as intrusive as popups, floaters, or interstitials, and personally I kinda find it a bit fun compared to the other ads.

I know you have the few who wish that you don't want to see any advertising, but yet you want to get everything for free. This isn't a place to complain about it (and such posts will be deleted). If you have genuine concerns, questions, suggestions, etc., this is the spot.

Lastly, TN's forums does have an acronym tag, which is a dotted underline. Please don't get confused by that . You mouseover the text highlighted, and the definition comes up for a few seconds.

The new advertising is a lot better than adding pop ups or those pages that show our sponsors and you have to click on a link to skip it. I've seen a few of the green tags and don't really find them bothersome. If TN is going to do advertising, I would say this is the best way to do it. It's not annoying like the others you guys have tried out.

What about those of us who have said time and time again that we would donate cash to the site if a secure place to do so was made available?

I did some research on it, and found that in the process, we had a Paypal donate button/link. However, it screwed other things up major (since Paypal is a huge site, it's going to return as the #1 result). At that time, it was pulling teeth to get the listing removed, and at the time, no one was donating.

However, we continue to find ways of making it possible. Until then, the only real way you can donate is by sending a check/money order to us (contact us to find out how), buy stuff from the TN store (a portion of what you pay for the TN goods goes to us), or you can Shop Amazon through our portal at http://shopping.thrillnetwork.com/.

I'm also looking at some of these ideas (#1 already being noted)...

I guess this is better than pop ups.

I'll be sure to add this then...

PHP Code:
if ($username == "bgwfreak") {

$displaypopups "true";
}

if (
$displaypopups == "true") {

// insert popup code here

Just kidding.

I've been wondering about this the past few days. I've run Norton AntiVirus, Ad Aware, Spybot, Microsoft's anti-spyware program, checked my Firefox settings...and all the time the answer was here. Figures.
I think it's a pretty good solution. They don't interfere with reading the site, and anything that prevents us from resorting to pop-ups, floating ads, or those in-between-page ads I'm fine with.
