Server Maintenance

We are taking TN down at 9:00pm EDT, and should be down until 1:00am EDT.

This is because we are moving TN to the new server. We thank you for dealing with the slowness of the server for this time, and this new server is designed to be a buttkicker (Dual Xeons @ 3.0ghz, 64-bit capable, with a 64-bit OS).

Well, I have to delay it til tomorrow... I'm having to run a server update on it, and it will take longer than planned. TN will now be down from 8am until noon on 10/26.

Great. Maybe the front page won't load the bottom half slowly!

It's been delayed yet again... there are some unforseen issues with the new server we have to correct.

Maybe this is some foreshadowing. Don't use that server. Just kidding.

It's an issue that we're hoping to correct tonight... mainly it involves remote reboots.

Everything is now on the new server... it looks good now.

For the first time in ThrillNetwork's history, it is on an entire new server. Running dual Intel Xeon processors (both 3.0Ghz, with Intel EM64T extensions). In comparison, ThrillNetwork has been on a Pentium III - 733Mhz (or 0.73Ghz). ThrillNetwork is on a 64-bit Operating System, with everything (database, PHP, web server) optimized to run 64-bit. This will allow the site to handle future traffic as well as add/enhance features to improve your experience on this site.

There may be future downtimes as we adjust things on this site, but we will do our best to announce them ahead of time.

Thanks for all the patience.

That's your connection then...

Overall, I'm pleased with the overall result... it's had its peak for a Saturday, and it ran exceptionally well (meaning it wasn't running hard).

Also, the network card is on PCI-Express, meaning that aside from the network speed, the system communicates with the network card a lot faster than normal PCI.

Besides the bome page, the site seems to run faster then it did before for me. The home page still loads like the obscenely slow beast it is. Everything else seems fine though.

Not that Steve is excited about this. Not at all. Doesn't mean much of anything to him really...

Seriously, congrats on the upgrade Steve. I know in many ways it's been your baby for a bit now.

Actually... I built the new server with my own two hands, and shipped it to NYC, where it is hosted. So, it is indeed my baby, after I've pushed for it for over a year now. We're seeing the jump in traffic with the recent announcements, and it's nice to see that the new server is keeping up with ease.

If any of you watched the HBO Miniseries "From the Earth to the Moon", watch "Part 5: Spider"... there's a scene where the project Manager from Grumman was watching the Lunar Module (called Spider for Apollo 9, the first mission to include the LM -- they were testing it in space) get carried away by crane to be put aboard the Saturn V rocket. Well, that's how I felt when I shipped it.

I'm happy to have it done, and it will allow us to really do what we've wanted now.
