Ok obviously you haven't been on it. Yes it looks smooth and is smooth until you hit the lift hill then all hell breaks lose and that is if you over 5'5". I'm 6'4" and barely fit and I'm still growing so not much longer until I stop riding it and well the cars are small (whats new?) and the thing you hold onto scrapes my knees and makes them bloody. Then when your turning the restraints are shaped like U's and it slams your legs into either side and that hurts. The smoothest part however is the loop!

I do agree that the seats are way too small (I'm about 5'11"). Even though I had a cut on my leg after the ride, I had so much fun during it that I don't even remember scraping it anywhere. The best time to ride is @ night. That first helix was truly scary!

I want to go on that ride sooooooooooooo bad, I can taste it. I really hope that I can go next summer, and maybe they will have new cars by then.

Tanner_J is right.

It does look good and has a good route but it is in NO way smooth.

Like already mentioned your legs watch them on the sides of the lapbar and HOLD ON for your first ride or 2

Rough

That ride was fun, but I rode it after an hour of rain and lightning and it was so so rough. I lik rough woodies, but that was a little too intense.

I reckon they stuffed up big time with that ride.

Firstly, they got a rather unknown company to do it, or, at least a company not praised for its smooth wooden coasters. Then, they decided they would put in an invsion. If Paramount wanted a looping woodie, the shouldn't have incoporated it on the worlds tallest. Then, they purchased cars made by Premier, which wasn't exactly a top choice; PTC or any of the other companies who are well known in the wooden coaster train industry.

If they wanted to do it well, they should have got intamin to build the ride, because everyone knows that for the intamin name to be on it, the ride has to be quality.

They shouldn't have made it taller than the beast and called it Son of Beast, and the loop isnt exactly greatly palced either.

Im sure some new trains could fix some of the pain problems, but the ride still wont exactly go down as a world class ride in years to come, even if it is the first woodie with a loop.

Until you ride it, don't say its rough. it's already a legend if you ask me. not the legend of its dad, but still is a huge engineering leap for the industry.

I haven't been on the ride...but it sounds pretty weird that people are leaving the ride with cuts on their body. I guess you should wear long pants when riding Son of Beast!

I've ridden Sonny. I am still more impressed with Pops. Sonny leaves you too battered and bruised if you are close to 6 foot in height or taller. I ridden many more woodies with more airtime, but it is an above average woodie in general. Not the best but better than a lot of others.

All of you guys who have said its rough, must not have ridden it this year or you rode in the back of the train. Before I go on, I'll like to say that I'm 6 ft 1 in tall. Now, when I rode it in the second row, I could not belive that you guys have said that it was rough. I have ridden wooden coasters at SFWOA, CP and PKI and SOB was the smoothest wooden coaster that I have ridden. It was smoother than any other coaster at PKI (steel included). I left the ride with now bruses, cuts or whatever else you guys have said. Then I rode it for a second time near the back. WHAT A DIFFERNT COASTER. It was increadably rough and jerky. In the back SOB was the roughest coasters that I have ever ridden. I left the ride with a major headache. I would have never thought that the front would be so much better than the back. Well maybe they could get new trains to fix the proublem. And if you want my advice, RIDE AS CLOSE TO THE FRONT AS YOU CAN.

I worked at PKI over the summer, so I had many rides on SOB. Here is what I have learned.

Two things affect the ride:
1) The weather
2) Where you sit

The weather factor basically comes down to this: the colder and wetter, the better. The hotter and dryer, the jerkier.

Now where to sit. The smoothest experience is actually in the middle seat of any car. This ensures that you are not sitting over the wheel assemblies. I honestly don't think that make a huge difference if you are near the front of the train, or the back--just as long as you choose the middle seat of the car.

Don't expect to see new trains next year. Those trains were specifically designed to handle the enormous forces on SOB. Over time, a typical PTC train would crumble to bits (excuse the exaggeration) if it ran the SOB course.

Whether you get a painfully jerky ride, or a smooth ride (I have had BOTH several times) it is still a rush! The experience is memorable and unforgettable no matter how well the train ran its course. Every element is thrilling, from the twisting dive out of the station, to the heart-pounding steepness of the first drop, to the enormous loop, to the final dive back and climb into the brakes... It's all incredible.

That is why it is my #1 woodie, despite its tendency to jerk you around here & there. ;)

I'm probably not going to have that problem. I am about 5' 2.5." I might grow a more but I'm not expecting much because I'm already 14.

Son of Beast just seems like park managers wanted the world's tallest wood coaster and and inversion on it. However, the loop seems to be quite a hit with regular park goers.

SOB IS smooth! Everytime I went on it ( Except the first ) it was like glass. No bumps, no bruises, no cuts, and no leg/body banging. A LOT smoother than it's father. Now, I did go on it when it was pretty cool outside, but you cant go from cuts and bruises to smooth at glass with a few degrees change in temp. The Beast doesn't even do that.

that may be he case cause my first ride was in the middle row while my second was in the front of the car.

This is so weird. How can one coaster evoke so different responses? I'm not tall and wasn't cramped that much in the cars, and went on it literally minutes after a rain/lightning storm which should have made it a lot smoother, but found it to be very rough. It was still a blast, but very very rough, probably the roughest woodie I've ever been on. Yet some other people thoguth is was smooth as glass. I rode it right in the middle...how weird is this?

I wonder what the deal is with this coaster? When I rode it in July 2000, it was pretty smooth (except for the first helix, that was like pretty rough, but not leg-brusing). I am 5' 10" and fir pretty well in the restraint. I was not uncomfortable and I sat up front on the right side. I was able to walk, actually, run after the ride was over! I didn't get bruises anywhere on my legs or anywhere else. I enjoyed Son of Beast, a lot. The loop was the best part of the ride, it's ultra-smooth, and the lap bars give you a lot of room to move in that loop. I love it! I'm going to have to get back to PKI sometime and ride that sucker again to see if it's gotten rougher since a lot of you people say it's really bad. It wasn't ultra-smooth, I mean it is a hyper-woodie, so it's bound to have rough spots, but it didn't kill me. You know, I actually think Gwazi is rougher than SOB, but Gwazi was pretty rough.

I rode SOB last summer. I rank it as my favorite woodie. I had to wait two hours in line to ride it. I sat in the front. My only complaint is that the lapbars are a little too heavy-duty. On the other hand, the ride was rough, and exciting as hell. I got three bruises on my right elbow, which is a sign of a great wooden coaster.
