Am I the only one who thinks Magnum sucks? It did absolutely nothing for me, except hurt. The view is fantastic, but after riding other hypers like SROS at SFNE and Nitro, I don't think it's even in the same class. Overlooking the fact that it was the first hyper and everybody loves it for that reason, is the ride really that good I swear Arrow squares off the hills on their coasters. Their changes of direction are so rough, which makes the airtime very jerky. Oh well, maybe it's just me.

I really enjoyed Magnum. I don't consider it a #1, but it is a great ride.

I agree. Magnum is a fantastic roller coaster, but is is the best in the world? Heck, no! I still really enjoyed my rides on it.

Magnum XL-200 is a good ride and it produces a lot of airtime, which I look for in a great coaster...it was my favorite but now Phantom's Revenge is my favorite coaster I've ever been on...I never would have expected Kennywood to install a coaster with better & more airtime than Magnum.

KPGUy |

I personally cant stand Magnum. The entire ride was a blur for me. I'm not talking about blur in a fast way, either, I'm talking about blur in a boring way.

Anybody ever notice that the people who trash Magnum always mention the other NEWER hypers? C'mon, people. For many of us (myself included) Magnum was our first hyper (and you never forget your first!), so the nostalgia is what draws us back. Heck, even after riding MF last year, my wife and I still can't wait to ride Magnum. It's the history involved.

To expect that after 12 years it can produce the same thrill that newer coasters give you is unrealisitc, but many of us don't look at it objectively like that. Long live Magnum!
Magnum used to be one of the greatest rides in the world. But unfortunately, the past year it got very rough and just wasn't the best rollercoaster in the world anymore. It is still a fun ride, but to experience Magnum at its best you would have had to ride it before 2000.

it personally didn't do much for me, and for the record, IT WAS MY FIRST HYPER. i mean it wasn't horrible, but raptor and mantis were mmuch better.

I think Cedar Point should hire Morgan to redo rough parts on Magnum, such as the pretzel turaround and replace it with the same type of trains like Phantom's Revenge now has...this would make the ride better...they should at the very least get newer and more comfortable trains.

KPGuy |

Good ride, but it's currently overrated. No way it beats Millennium Force as #1 steel. Magnum deserves respect and it does get it.

I haven't ridden it, but it looks like a pretty cool ride. I bet it used to be the best steel coaster in the world, but it isn't anymore. I mean, the Cyclone at SFNE used to be one of the best woodies in the world, but is it now? Of course not. Better things have come along--namely, CCI. It's the same thing with Magnum; it's a good coaster, and was the first hyper for lots of people, but Morgan, Giovanola, Intamin, and B&M have all made much better coasters.

Magnum was my first hyper when I was 10 years old (1993) and I thought it was the most amazing thing in the world. When I went back when I was 16 it was still unbelievable. The fact that I have only been to CP twice also increases the aura around the ride for me. I rode S:ROS at SFNE this year and thought it was outstanding, but the Magnum will always hold a special place in my heart and it will continue to excite me for that reason.

Magnum is my second favorite roller coaster (to SUPERMAN: RIDE OF STEEL at SFNE), and I've been on Apollo's Chariot, Nitro, Steel Force... It is only rough in certain parts of the train, and the view is awesome. It is slightly rougher if you sit in one of the rows over the wheels, so sit in the 2nd row of one of the cars. I don't know if this is really true, but it seemed like it: I rode in the back, found that rough, so I rode in the back row of the 2nd or 3rd car and found that equally rough. So I rode in the 2nd to back row and it was AWESOME, a lot smoother, or so it seemed. Very few other hypercoasters can beat this ride's out-of-control feel.

Magnum is not over rated anymore but the only reason it is probably highly rated for the past 8 years was because it was at the rollercoaster capital in the world. From people I talk with Steel Force is awsome

I loved Magnum when I first went on it in 1990. It's still an great coaster, and I still like it. But after riding Millenium Force last year, it just wasn't the same. It shows how good MF is when it can make a ride like Magnum seem small. I used to rate Magnum as the best at Cedar Point. But now I rate them as MF, Raptor, Mantis, Mean Streak, Magnum. If Magnum could get new restraints it would make it a better ride. Those hard black ones seem to nail me in the kidneys over every hill.

Well lets see, the first time I rode Magnum it was the first coaster I had been on at 195 feet with a 205 foot drop and for my money at the time it was the best one I had riden because of height and speed, but for elements, it bored me plus the fact that the air time coming back was rough air, not the smoothe air that you get on coasters nowadays, but I still loved it then. Of course that was quite a few years ago now. I still ride out, just to ride it, but I prefer Superman ROS at SFAmerica where I live to Magnum and Desperado in Nevada at Buffalo Bills as well. Though Depserado is very rough as well, its just great riding a coaster like that in the desert....But lets give credit where credit is due, Magnum was the first of its kind, without it we would not be where we are now with the steel coasters...Think about it, something new is always great, but over the years it gets perfected....Jeff TRoA

I love the Magnum. I think as rides get older and newer thrills come up, people move on and don't think of a ride as being as good as it used to be. I think this is especially true of younger thrill-seekers.

I took my ex-girlfriend's nephews (teens) on a coaster trip last year and they kind of "blahhhh'd" over anything that wasn't the tallest, fastest, loopiest type in the world. I think a lot of young people think this way and they miss out on rides that are medium-sized that just offer a lot of fun experiences.

The Big Bad Wolf is one that a number of people don't care for, but the little village and a night ride when it's very dark and everybody's howling on the train is just about as much fun as most rides for me. I think the Magnum's view of Lake Erie adds an element to the Magnum as well.

Am I right fellow "older" riders?? (Older in physical age only! We are all young in heart and mind!). |

When Magnum first opened it was the best coaster in the world. Although today many coasters are better, Magnum started the hypercoaster trend and still today is a great ride!!!

Why doesn't Cedar Point just get better trains for Magnum so it's smoother...it's possible because Morgan did it with Phantom's Revenge. This may enhance the overall ride experience.

KPGuy |

The Magnum I believe has gotten considerably worse in a few years. It used to be my second favorite behind the Steel Phantom, but now i feel the ride is way down on my list. When it first opened it was revolutionary and was so unique, but now i believe it is out-dated ever since the Force was built. The Steel Phantom was never copied, and it stayed so unique. The hypercoaster has since been perfected, but the hyper-looper is the most unique ride ever. It just isn't fun anymore when compared to the Force, and there is no possible way that it is better than MF. MF does everything the Magnum did better, its that simple, and rating it ahead of Millennium Force is a sin.

I think Magnum will always be overrated because it was the first coaster to break the 200 foot barrier. I think the same thing will happen to Millenium Force in 10 to 15 years when bigger and better coasters are built.

i have been on steel force nitro apollos chariot superman ride of steel at SFA and all i can say is that steel force which is the most similar to magnum is the worst of them all. It is not bad and it is a great ride but the B&M rides and the intamins are far better. My cousin has been on magnum and SF and she thinks that magnum stinks comparitively. I think that the ride is way overated because my cousing and i both love similar coaster experiances.

The responses are pretty much what I expected. The die hard CP fans love it cause it holds a special place in their hearts . Put that aspect aside, and the reviews are mixed. I heard so many great things about it, and was disappointed after riding. I thought it was more annoying than fun. I had no desire to get back in line and ride it again.

I wish you'd convince a half-million other people not to like it, too--so I wouldn't have to wait so long fot it every time I visit!

No coaster will replace Magnum in the hearts of the masses--not even the taller, faster MF in the same park. Have a newer hyper at your home park--perhaps a taller, faster, smoother one? Fabulous! Enjoy your coaster and be grateful CP paved the way for your local monster. But don't expect the same praise, acclaim and attention people lavish on the Magnum......it won't be coming.

-CPlaya
(Who also has a taller, smoother hyper at his home park)

[ This Message was edited by: CoastaPlaya on 2001-05-23 08:34 ] |

The hyper at my home park, SROS at SFNE, gets too much attention already. When I was at CP, it was packed, but the line for Magnum was only about 10 minutes.

Z-Man, you are not alone! Magnum did suck! I have NO idea why it gets good ratings, because the ride just plain sucks! It's rough, and despite what anyone says, I got NO air! The ONLY thing it has is a great view. That's it.

-Raven_Rider |

If you didn't get air-time on the Magnum then somebody must have duct-taped you to your seat while you weren't looking? If you haven't ridden Magnum yet this year, give it another chance. It feels a lot smoother to me recently.

The Magnum doesn't get number 1 because of the steel it was made from. It's takes the #1 slot because of the scenery and the history. I think the best part of Magnum is the terrifying trip to the top of the lift hill. I would like to see CP do some work on it though. It could be restored to it's former glory. |

Magnum is a legend and always will be. It is a icon as coasters go and is still a blast to ride. It is in the heart of many coaster fans and will stay there.
