Well, it all depends on what you're good at, and what you want to do. If you're good with metal, cement, and other building materials, you could work with the construction crews and actually build the coaster itself. If you're good with computers, you could design the coaster. You could even run it through some tests to see what the g's will be and such.(this is the type of job I would want) If you're a good artist, you could dream up the new coaster and draw it. There are many other jobs out there though, these were just the ones I could think of.

Most common of all -- be a coaster operator! :) You have to be 18 (most states), and there are no special requirements / education necessary. You would undergo training by the park -- on the job, of course, and learn the procedures for operating the ride, including emergency situations, braking/stopping, restarting, etc. You really get the inside view, and it makes the greatest summer job, especially in college. My recommendation (duh) would have to be Cedar Point! <SMALL>'97 Disaster Transport Crew / '98 Iron Dragon Crew.</SMALL>

You could also be one of the high business executives at the park, in which you wouldn't just be working with the coasters, but the whole park too. |

Yea, being the CEO of a giant chain of parks would be cool. We could show up Gary Story.

Actually, PKI is 16 and up. I dont know about the rest of the parks in the state tho. The reason I started working at PKI in the summer is so that when I am in college, I can (hopefully) apprentice up at PKI as a ride maintenance engineer. From there, Im hoping to springboard into designing, but if Im stuck in ride maintenance for the rest of my life, at least i will be around coasters!!!!

Many of you have not a the slightest clue. to design rollercoasters you must be a civil or a mechanical engineer. this requires at least 4 years of college. architects cannot design rollercoasters whatsoever. if you cant draw(like me) you can still design rollercoasters because of the computer applications in which we use. I have my masters in civil/structural engineering from Purdue. i hated art but im not in a job i love |

I'm going to try to be a structural engineer/designer of coasters. It's just one bad thing about this job. Everyone laughs at you when you say that's what you want to be. Like today, My school had a career fair. It's supposed to help us figure out what we want to be whe we get out high school or college. At the end of it they asked me if it helped me decide what career I wanted to be in. I said, "No, I want to be rollercoaster designer." That guy started laughing right in front of me. I was fixing to slug him when his boss called him over and started yelling at about that they weren't supposed to shoot down our dreams and stuff. But I only have two options. 1.) start my own design firm, and 2.) work for SFOT and be the parks personal rollercoaster designer(kinda' like Werner Stingel). My mom says that she won't let me move to Utah or where ever the US coaster companys are. Other than those jobs above, you can be in: Fabrication Ride Operation Ride Maintenance

Depends on what you want to do at a park for the minimum age. You can work at Cedar Point as young as 14, but they require that you be 18 to run any of the rides (coasters or else). I'm guessing that other Cedar Fair parks have the same restrictions. Let's see, other coaster-related careers... How about filming them / photography? We all know there would be a great market out there for professional photographs, and that would be a fantastic job. :)

You could try one of the big coaster companies and see if they need any "permanent testers" lol. That would be an amazing job to have! Maybe we should start a coasterforum coaster company with all these future designers and such! We'd be the best at it too.....what with our supreme knowledge and enthusiasm, lol. |

I took a test and it said that I would best be a designer...well my teacher said to put what you got on it on to the front of the test so that we could later get information on our career and I put Designer of roller coasters. I hope they don't think it's a joke..my friends already thought I was joking. I don't understand why people think it's so funny. In my opinion it's a lot better getting a job you are interested in instead of just getting a job for the money. But oh well. I doubt I'll get the job since there are a ton of people interested in it seems like. But I wouldn't mind just being a ride op either ;) |

u kno i havtn been a ride op yet obviously and for those of u who havnt i really dont think it will be that fun... i mena yea your job is at an amuseent park operationg a roller coastr but think when ur operating it youl think to your self omg i have to go on this coastr and ull be thinking bout it all day until u get your break or something....and u also wont (most likely) get pad that much money... i mena ull kill urself with all those temptations to just get on ands ride it...i know id get that temptation at least 500 times a day oping a coastr

Whew, you might want to use a period in there occasionally... Actually, when you're a ride op, you do get to ride the coaster almost daily -- testing, the whole train to yourself, first row, no wait, the works. :D And believe it or not, you do get sick of riding it after awhile. At Cedar Point, your employee ID is admission into the park, so whenever you're off duty you can go ride whatever you want (same lines as everyone else, however). You cannot ride in uniform, so doing so on your break isn't possible (too short anyway!).

I'm still having a blast, and I know theres a lot of people on these boards who have been or are ride ops and I think most would say they'd do it again :) I did have some similar doubts before I started, but I'm still pleasantly surprised.

I've been doing research on how become a rollercoaster designer. I've been e-mailing major companies and everything but they never respond. I did e-mail John Wardely, and he e-mailed me back saying that there wasn't a huge demand for rc designers, and that the best chance I would have is to work for a park on a design team. He said that I need to start off being like a ride op or something in college while your getting my masters and once you've got that see if you can be hired to get on the design team for the park. I wish people would take me seriously. But I'll show them. If you're really interested in careers that are involved in the amusement industry, I highly recommend this book. Found here.
