Lance Burton Rollercoaster Trick

There was a show on UK TV the other night called the "World's 50 Greatest Magic Tricks"

In the top 20 was a trick by Lance Burton. He's chained to a rollercoaster track and has to escape before the carriage gets to him. So, the carriage goes up the lift hill, and Lance tries to escape. I'm not kidding when I say the train missed him by about 1cm...I'm sure it touched his shoe as he jumped out of the way...He was visibly shaken and said it was the most stupid and dangerous trick he had ever done...

Anyone seen this? I'm amazed the theme park let him do this. The rollercoaster had a yellow track; I think it was that big one just outside Las Vegas. It reached speeds of up to 80mph. I dread to think what would have happened had it hit him.

Just thought you might like to know!

Just wondering, but how is that magic? It's just getting out of chains, not magic lol. I bet it was cool to see though. That would suck if he got hit by the train lol.

Theres this thing called showmanship...he obviously did it on purpse to put you on edge. Beleive me, the casino would not have let him do somethign like that unless they were 100% syre he was able and a professional. Why are you guys sayign its stupid? its no more stupider than hanging over the hoover damn by your feet while trying to escape a straight jacket....

On most of the tricks (hoover dam) their is usually a backup thing incase the thing goes wrong. On the coaster trick, their is no way to stop the train, so if he cant get out in time, then he would get run over. Although just a guess, but the chains may not have even been locked to the track at all ;). It didnt look like he unlocked his chains on his feet before he jumped.

its physically impossible to get run over if the car can't come off the tracks.

and yes its very stupid.

unless you saw it live, i wouldn't buy into it all that much. though these shows claim that 'no camera tricks were used, and the camera will NOT cut away!!!,' that's usually a partial/complete lie. i remember seeing this one done on television, and it did indeed look like he wasn't really 'chained up' to begin with. so all he had to do was jump out of the way, and i still say they used clever editing to make it much more dramatic than it really is. why is there never a perspective shot when, say, copperfield made the statue of liberty 'disappear'? cause it went nowhere.

If it wasn't just a trick of photography, an illusion, or some other trick, then that was a REALLY stupid thing to do. If the train had hit him...... . Plus, it would be really sad if we had another coaster death.

Although somehow Markey would find the manufacturer or the height/g level of the coaster at fault. :D :D

I have to agree with TopGun77 and Mrk468zz in saying that he stalled just a bit to create more drama and suspense. I think he might have taken a little more time then he wanted to but only by seconds. I saw it when they first showed it on TV in his special.

i saw it on some show... they made it seem like the train would hit him at top speed but he did his "trick" more to the end of the ride... after the MCBs so the train woul;d not be going like 80mph... he should have done it at the bottom of the first drop...

I saw this and it was the first magic show "trick" that I have ever seen that looked more like the reality of a poorly executed plan than a "magic trick." The reality of him getting off the tracks just as the train was about to strike was far too close for comfort, and his expression looked more real than rehearsed. I think he planned for it to look dramatic, but he got more drama than he could have planned. I could be wrong. Perhaps Lance is a great showman and I am naive, but that's the impression I was left with, and it has stuck with me since I saw the show when it first appeared in the U.S.

I went to his show in Vegas and saw this. I remember that he was tied to a very late part of the track (after the MCBR), so I'm guessing if he didn't have time they could have stopped it.

That would have been so funny if he would have been hit. It would have served him right for being so stupid. Wouldn't that suck if you were ridding the ride when he got hit. Eww! I think the idea of magic is a bunch of bologna!

Er, how could they have stopped it mid ride?!! It would have stopped if it hit him! The coaster was still going pretty fast before he jumped out of the way. Half a second later (not even), and it could have been a disaster; by the look on his face afterwards, even he seemed to realise this...and he wasn't dramatising it. Of course it was meant to be close; but not even he thought it would be that close:eek:

Oh, and there were no people on the coaster, only dummies. I don't think the park would have allowed that!

if they found out that something went wrong and he wouldn't be able to get out in time, they could've stopped it at the brakes if the train hadn't passed them already

i saw that trick on tv a few years ago it really seemed like he missed the train by maybe a foot

It will be better if he can 'turn' the triangular hills on Magnum into parabolic ones.

Yeah! That's my thinking to or at the top of the 2nd hill so if he srews it up there's a nice long 150 foot plunge to the ground!
