imulse or launch?

I hope this isn't a dumb question, but what is the difference between an impulse coaster and a launch. I know the intamin launched coasters like V2 are always refered to as impulse coasters, so is this just a name intamin made up instead of launch like B&M made up cobra roll instead of boomerang or what?

Launch is a general term used by all coasters that utilize a catapult system. Whether it is flywheel, weight drop, pneumatic, hydraulic, LIM, LSM, etc.

Impulse is a term coined by Intamin AG for their suspended shuttle catapult coasters. The definition of Impulse made short is

- "A moving force."
- "Sudden inclination."

That's why the term 'impulse' was tagged. It represents the sudden and constant acceleration of the impulse coaster trains as it passes by the LIM run.

For those that have been on an Intamin Impulse, you know that everytime your train passes the station, the train is accelerated. And each time, it boosts the train faster and faster. There you experience the sudden force as the string of LIM motors propel the carriage to a faster speed each time.

It would only be applied to their suspended shuttle catapult coasters. Which would include all three generations of 'Impulse' coasters.

Intamin's hydraulic catapulted Xcelerator is a new breed of coaster they call the 'Rocket Coaster'

Read carefully, please.

What you described IS an impulse. Basically it is any of the Intamin AG 'U' shaped shuttle coasters that are powered by a string of LIM motors which propel the carriage both ways.

That's the only breed of coaster that are tagged 'Impulse' coasters.

All other Intamin AG launched coasters are under seperate titles and names.

Impulse is the name Intamin has for it's U-shaped shuttle coaster family. The general word for describing coasters that shoot you out (instead of falling from a hill) is launched.

It's like car manufacturer has different names for the very same thing like variable valve timing (V-TEC, VVT-i, CVT, VANOS and ....) and continuous variable transmission (Manumatic, XTROID......).

Yeah, an impulse is a certain kind of coaster, and a launch is any kind of launched coaster.

friction? its called friction? its the same thing as a tire drive lift hill except mush faster.

its very simple what an impulse is, its just what they call those types of coasters. just like how coasters are called the vekoma "boomerangs" or the schwarzkopf "shuttle loop", these are the intamin "impulse" coasters.

Well, the newly modified SFMW V2 doesn't have an class to itself. It was a second generation impulse that was modified because the park evaded local zoning restrictions.

I think the first impulse was the one in japan thats grey with black supports. Does it have a twisted spike or a spike with the "hold" on it.
