| Paramount and Hyper Coasters...
Why doesn't Paramount have any TRUE hyper coasters? SOB doesn't count, it's in a category of it's own, I am talking about steel with lots of air time and smoothness...I figured they would jump on the hyper coaster band wagon back in 99' when the hyper coaster craze started up. You would think ONE of there 7 or 8 parks would have one. I figure it's bound to happen sooner or later, I just don't know which park would get the first...maybe PCW because they haven't gotten anything big since, what, 95'?

It would be neat if PKD got one. They could put it back near Rebel Yell and Hurler. Of course they have got there fair share of big rides in the last few years. So maybe one of the other parks deserves one.

Carowinds,Great America or Canada's Wonderland desirve it. They seemto be terribly lax about thrills when compared with the other two. I only count five Parimount Parks. Where do you get 7 or 8 Musicfreak?

There's 6; Terra Mitica in Spain is owned by Paramount. Even though they are still the most popular type of coaster in the world (look at the golden tickets), new hypercoasters seem to be on the decline. They hit their peak from 1999-2001, when half of the world's conventional hypercoasters were built (9). Last year, only one was built (Silver Star), and only one (Thunder Dolphin) is planned for 2003. With all that to keep in mind, along with Paramount's history, I don't think they will be investing in a hypercoaster anytime soon. EDIT: Whoa! I just noticed this after posting! My avatar was finally changed! Go me!

Paramount operates 6 parks and then they also have Star Trek: The Experience down in Vegas. I also wouldn't be surprised to see a few other parks included into the Paramount chain in the future. |

lets not forget that paramount also will be managing bonfante gardens. in my opinion out of the three paramont parks i've been to i think carowinds needs a good hyper. i'd have to say B&M. why you ask because carowinds would really thrive with the introduction of a coaster of such magnitude.

That'd be awesome if Carowinds got a hyper. It would be a really nice coaster to go along with Top Gun. In fact, I bet they are getting a hyper in '03, but noone lives there so we don't know it yet because there has been no announcement. Okay, that's a huge stretch but I can hope (I might be going to PC over spring break)

I really enjoyed Carowinds on my trip and yes a nice hyper would round out their collection tremendously.

Although not many true hypers were built, the Junior hypers gained some speed and had amazing layouts, but were 20-40 feet below the height. I do think Paramount should install a hyper in one of their parks. Alot of people like the height and speed of them, and you can do some cool things with them.

PCW doesn't really have a "stand-out" coaster, so it would make sense if they got the first Paramount hyper.

It seems that those rumors about a Morgan junior hyper for PGA has faded away.

Hmmm this is the first time I've ever heard of a Morgan Junior Hyper goigng to PGA. 2003 WAS supposed to bring Rebel Rocket, an Intamin Mega coaster (over 200' I might add), but that's not happening this year (supposedly move to 2004 because SFMW wasn't adding anything). I guess we'll have to wait untill 2004 to see if this is true (and to add credibility to the rumor, just look at Great America Thrill's updates to see all the work that is being done near the bone yard, something big is coming to PGA)

Sorry, I live here in Charlotte and the only things coming to the park this year are a family inverted coaster (which brings Carowinds inverted coaster count to 3, maybe some sort of record!) and Spong Bob is going in the Action FX theater. The next big coaster is looking like it will be 05' and 04' is supposed to be stuff added to the water park. I agree, Carowinds could use a hyper coaster, but right now lack of room is what is keeping me from believing that. I "hear" the next big coaster is going on smurf island...something about they want it to interlock with Vortex... |

not sure if you would know but in one of the pics of hurler on rcdb there is a huge like field behind carowinds. now i know they don't own it, but could it be possible they could buy it. also i always thought that the parking lot that runs along thunder road is unneseccary (excuse spelling), i say you could build a hyper there that runs along with thunder road and then kind of turns inward towards the water park (stengal dive baby, i wish i wish i wish) . you know classic out and back design. also off topic, anyone interested in marathoning a ride at carowinds? if so PM me.

Carowinds property ends right about where that road right next to Hurler is. The big plot of land behind that (which I think is being cleared) is owned by a development company that is building office parks, warehouses, and the such. I would agree that the parking lot on the side would be great for some sorta hyper, but the last season it was season pass VIP parking, and if they have better attendance this year than apposed to last year, they need all the space they can get. They can't support 40,000 guests in their parking lot!! Last summer one Saturday had an attendance of like 38,000. They had people parking on the road that goes into Carowinds, before you even get to the gate to pay for parking! Then they had people parking over at the outlet mall right across from it! So, I don't think they will be getting rid of that lot soon... On a similar note, that outlet mall is getting worse and worse. More stores are closing up, they only have a handful of stores in there now. With the way the economy is going, there is talk of Carowinds buying up that bit of land (if you recall, Carowinds owns most of it already, they had their monorail go all the way around the outlet mall and back) and turning it into more parking lot, then extending the park that much further out into the existing parking lot. Also, the employee parking lot can be pushed back further into the campground, and that is what is planned for 04' and the water park expansion. The other place Carowinds is looking to buy some land is back toward the Pavilion. Behind the bus parking lots and what not is a heap of land, only a tiny bit Carowinds already owns and I think there was talk of buying it up now, then keeping it for future expansion.

Yeah that would be fun and all, but WHY?? Go on your favorite coaster 100 times in a row or something along those lines it would take the fun you get out of riding it. Knowing the track inside and out would not let you experience it like your first time. When i go on a coaster such as Top Gun, I look at it like it's my first time on it and i will get a new experience every time i ride it. But if you know the track and the airtime at exact points in the ride, then that would very much take out the fun of the ride in my opinion. It just wouldn't be worth it IMO. But that's just my opinion. On a similar note, If you DO marathon a coaster at Carowinds, I would recommend Thunder Road or Hurler (in the front, of course) because you couldn't stay very comfortable in the OTSR's on Top Gun for 100 times in a row. On A woodie, you could get relatively comfortable. With OTSR's you would get sick of it after about 7 or 8 rides. Just my 2 cents.

I wouldn't worry about the whole Hyper coaster thing. It's pretty much run its course. I'd say, if Paramount's got the money. to look for a giga to pop up in one of the parks. May take a while, but just wait...

You dont have to have a taller coaster to have more fun. You have Hyper Woodies, but alot of people think the smaller woodies are better. The same can be true of a hyper. You dont need a giga to attract people.

ahhh forget all this talk about paramount hypers... if the rumors are true, and i've heard several... dont know how credible they are or not, PKI will be getting a huge GIGA in 2004... nice as this would be, i dont see it happening... but PKI being the flagship park if im not mistaken is due for a big coaster next year... hopefully over 200... a floorless or flying would be nice... very nice!

About 2 or 3 years ago, a friend of mine and I rode Thunder Road backwards well over 50 times in one day. The joys of youth...Second, I was thinking it wouldn't just be riding the ride. Carowinds is more likely to hype it up and let us do it without getting off the ride if we did it for good reasons...like a charity. That is my wish for this thing. If we got each person who is doing the marathon a coperate sponsor that we could like wear their shirt for their company while riding or what not, the news would be all over that, the companies get mad publicity for themselves while donating so much money for every ride on the coaster. We could easily raise a few hundred dollars for a charity all while having a good time. Well worth it to me and that is MY 2 cents.

Ok, but if you are going to do it, I would not recommend Top Gun. Yes, the harnesses are safe, but they are too restrictive in their line of sight. For example, if you ride a coaster over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and(Getting kind of annoyin' ain't it?) over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over again, then you would want to look at something ELSE other than the ride itself. If you sit in an invert, you get a one-way view: ahead of you. Nothing new to notice. But on a woodie such as Thunder Road or Hurler, you get a 360 degree view of the world. If you know a track inside out and upside down, then you would know what the track looks like and all that stuff. It wouldn't take away from the ride, but it would get boring only looking at the track all the time. I am saying this for the riders' sake. Not downing the idea, just trying to help you out in your selection of a ride to marathon.

Funny you guys should mention this, I rode Thunder Road 16 times in a row one time, and I giggled the entire time, every single ride! I then attepmted to do it on Top Gun, I rode 9 times, and it just got old. At around the 7th time, me and my gf resorted to watching each other and watching the horizon flip around behind us... Thunder Road backwards is sooo awesome.

Hey, I rode Hurler (at PKD) 13 times. I loved it, its got great airtime, its rather intense, and its an awesome ride. Anyways, I also think that any coaster backwards is awesome. Rebel Yell at PKD, going backwards, its GREAT. Of course, how did we get off Hyper Coasters and onto Marathoning? Well, I hope PKD will get a hyper, SFA and BGW both have one, and PKD needs to do something about that. Diamond Falls is being removed, and I hear rumors about Shockwave going, perhaps one in that area.

Diamond Falls is getting removed? I would say it might be a safe bet that the Shockwave is getting taken out; PKI took out there King Cobra and it isn't that great of a ride. Good place for some sort of coaster right in the middle of the park.

thats a bold statement. you never know if a paramount park will put in a hyper. personally if paramount will put a 218 ft wooden coaster that has a loop, i wouldn't rule them out about putting in a true out and back hyper, or a twister hyper. you never know.

I think a good ol hyper out and back would round out their collection tremendously. I want a out and back, but not a twister. Just huge dips, a nice turnaround, then head on back...rump raising (thanx for the term thrillride) all the way back!

PKD needs it but PKI is the most likely to get something like that, but it'll probably be Giga. Oh well. Carowinds and Great America are the one that REALLY need it. If they have the room it should be done.
