Height/Speed: Does it matter to you?

How important is a coaster being tall and fast to you? Do you like coasters that are big or does it not matter much? Do you prefer big elements such as loops, cobra rolls hill, etc or do you like smaller elements?

I do tend to go for the bigger coasters generally more, but records aren't necessary for me.

I'd take a B+M coaster (read:Superman Ultimate Flight or Raging Bull) over a record-breaking, super-tall, so-fast-you-black-out-on-the-first-and-only-hill kind of coaster. At least with inversions, twists, and rolls, it doesn't get old so fast. Rides that only feature height and speed (read:certain Northern Ohio coasters) quickly become one trick ponies. Sure, you'll still get your fair share of riders because it's the tallest and fastest in the world, but how weak is it to worry about records?

I think what is most important is the impression of height. think about it - a dark ride feels much faster than normal, but is actually probably slower. Certain rides feel a lot higher, usually by having small buildings around a ride or something. If a ride is built next to tall trees, or with nothing around it to gauge height (any SFMM ride surrounded by concrete) it dosn't seem as scary.

Also other tricks like overhanging (either side) cars on the track (any bm hyper) and having track criss cross (raging bull).

look at this:

http://www.rcdb.com/installationgallery535.htm?Picture=5

compared to this

http://www.rcdb.com/installationgallery615.htm?Picture=9

The first one looks worse dosn't it?

Edit: twisting drops also feel steeper....

Heighy schmeit, speed schmeed. As long as I'm smiling when I get off the coaster, it doesn't matter.

I'm not obsessed with height and/or speed. I prefer ejector airtime and/or lateral g's to raw speed.

One of my favorite rides is The Comet at SF: Great Escape. The Comet is not the hightest or fastest, but sure is fun (great ejector air and lateral g's). The same can be said for Villain at Geauga Lake, though Villain lacks ejector air.

I don't need them, but a lot of the time it just works out that the biggest and fastest offer the best ride experiences.

Height isn't that important to me, on account of my home park is BGT. But don't get me wrong, when I see a tall coaster I definatley want to ride it.

I am a sucker for exceptional height, speed, and theming, but it definately doesn't have to be a record holder for me to say, run to at it the park's opening. Like Andrew said, if you're smiling when you get off, it doesn't make a difference what 'record' it holds (or doesn't hold).

I go for airtime over height or speed any day.

I would be enticed, but a great coaster doesn't really need to be tall or fast.

I'd have to say I love big coasters with height & speed.

If it isn't faster than 70 mph and isn't higher than 200ft than it doesn't get me that excited.

Height and speed are great, no doubt there, but I don't really favor any particular aspect of a coaster over another. I love rides like Millennium Force, which has both height and speed, but I also like KBF's Jaguar, which has neither of those two elements. What matters most to me is the enjoyment factor, a combination of every single aspect of a ride.

I used to think I'm a height/speed guy, until I tried out Ragin' Cajun a few days ago at SFGAM. While it's not one of my favorites, it's just a fun fun ride. The last time I came off a ride with a smile that big was TTD, mainly because I was so surprised such a small ride could be so fun.

I'm glad to hear that about Ragin' Cajun. I've yet to ride it, it wasn't open yet when I was there. So I have something to look forward to when I go next time.

I don't care about height actually. Speed is somewhat more important. What I do love, is if a ride is surprisingly compact. I like all those other tracks and supports so close around, therefore I prefer Superman the Ride at SFH over all other rides there (although the choice is hard), with Goliath being second. I also have the idea that wooden coasters feel as if going faster, while they mostly don't. Therefore. Robin Hood is third. I have never been on a B&M ride, because we don't have any in Holland. Please can someone pursuade B&M to build one in SFH?

Personally I guess that I like height and speed because some of my fav rides are speed machines(SoB, MF, Magnum) But I still like the small guys, after all one of my all time rides was King Cobra*sobs* (rip). MAN I want that ride back..

So you're basically saying you don't like women??? ;)

Height and speed are not enough to make a coaster "great". Like Andrew said, if you're smiling when you get off, then that's all that matters.

If the coaster is big, I'm on it. I love big and fast coasters, that's what makes them fun, I think.

Also just how I like my women....I'm sorry, have I gone too far? ;)

Anyway, it seems from viewing the poll, that most people do care a good bit or even a lot about height and speed. That's how I am. I can like all different types of rides. But speed and how tall a coaster is something I like a lot. It's no wonder my two favorite coasters are Millennium Force and Top Thrill Dragster.
I don't need them, but a lot of the time it just works out that the biggest and fastest offer the best ride experiences.
Ditto. There are some rides that I totally love solely because of speed and height (read: TTD), but most of the time it's just so happens that the height accompanies other ride elements such as airtime (read: Magnum XL200 and Apollo's Chariot). There are also some totally kick ass rides that barely or don't hit 100 feet (read: Georgia Scorcher, Georgia Cyclone, Mindbender, Dueling Dragons, Blue Streak).

It doesn't hurt. I'll admit, I'd make an escpecially long trip to ride the worlds tallest or fastest. But some of my favorite coasters aren't even hyper coasters. Kraken, Phoenix, Lightning Racer, LNM, Medusa, Dominator, Alpengeist.

i dont particularly care about height or speed. MF is over twics as tall as shivering tiombers yet shivering timbers is a much better ride than MF. airtime is my #1 on a coaster and shivering timbers provides it in abundance yet its not the tallest or fastest but its my #1 roller coaster.

Size and speed are in now way that big of a deal to me. Some of the smaller, slower coasters are my fav. Look at TTD, 420ft & 120mph and the ride basically sucks. Size is not everything ;)

Height and speed are nothing to me, I like substance. Case in point: Millennium Force. After the first drop, there is nothing satisfying about that ride. There are spots where the ride used to give off massive airtime, but no longer does. It's incredibly disappointing. Also, my #1 wooden coaster, Phoenix, is not that tall at all.
