Kingda Ka bit on TV

OK, dont have the time to explore otherwise, so I saw a preview on History last night...and Kingda Ka will be featured on television. It is NOT just about Kingda Ka, but tonight (8/24) at 9pm Eastern Modern Marvels subject is "The Worlds Fastest" or something like that, and Kingda Ka is supposed to be on it.

Sounds cool. I'll tune into the History Channel tonight. They will probably only have a small part on it with a fowards and reverse POV like they did on FOX with the "Making of the Golden Kingdom" show.

Sounds good. I will tape it hopefully. I wonder if it is just about coasters or if has cars and planes and what not.

The World's Fastest.
Airs on Wednesday, August 24 at 9:00pm ET

Perhaps no field has experienced this revolution in velocity more acutely than transportation. We look at five blazingly fast technological marvels that have pushed the speed limits to the very edge, each with its own unique and dramatic history: the world's fastest production car (Sweden's Koenigsegg CCR); the world's fastest train (the Maglev in Shanghai); the world's fastest boat (The Spirit of Australia);the world's fastest roller coaster ( Kingda Ka) and the fastest thing on earth (the Holloman High Speed Test Track), used to test highly sensitive equipment for many branches of the government and commercial clients.

I Will Replay Tv It

That bit was actually decent. It help me better understand how the launch system works.

It was a decent little bit. I'm tired of the Discovery/Travel Channel shows that refer to Superman:The Escape as some out of this world ground breaking coaster (and they were modern enough just to show the supports for the HUGE coaster 'Goliath' going up). Nothing against those two coasters, but I just wish these shows would update (i.e. how about MF, TTD, Shiekra, etc.) At least they did a decent job and didn't screw anything up too badly.

just watched it, anybody else notice, they got the year wrong on MF? I also thought it was funny that the design "all came from a computer", when later in the show, they showed TTD.

Just watched it. Didn't tell me nothing I didn't know about it. Is kinda neat though seeing that on tv. What really got my attention was that hollomand or whatever launch sled, 6000mph!

^ yeah I found that amusing. The whole thing was good, but I thought they could of showed the other coasters more, like MF. The program showed me more of how it was launched, but for the most part, I knew most of it. I wish they had a video of a roll back, or atleast explained it.

I liked it. I really enjoyed the MagLev, KK, and Hollmand segments. There were some good animations of KK and it discussed the brakes which has not been done before on a show.

I believe that Six flags had some say in what was able to be said or they wouldn't be able to do this program. Some things I noticed was the "unforseen problem of building a ride this tall" TTD is only 36 feet shorter and at that height 36 feet would be minimal for wind. 2nd the "unique launch and break system" There are now how many coasters using this launch and howmany use magnetic breaking? I did like the fact that before they mentioned Kingda Ka they did the article on Maglev trains as I see the 07 coaster in CP to be the first Maglev coaster. Laugh at me now but it will happen (maybe not this early but at some point it will happen.).

In the little info box before the commercial they said KK gathers 21,000 HP before its launched..I thought it was only like 8,000.

That may have something to do with them saying "successful" before that.

At least we now know we won't be going 635 mph on a coaster. The military testing sled segment after the rollercoaster segment mentioned the military official sitting on the one sled and being crushed and temporarily blinded after riding. That's harsh!

Even though a Six Flags park is my homepark, I bet several other people wanted to join me on knocking some sense into the Six Flags Engineer for fibbing in the ride description. I was so glad that TTD got it's mention in the segment but the shot of it hardly clued it was the same type of coaster as Kingda Ka. The animation explaination helped in visualizing the ride system working. I liked how the mention of military technology launching hydraulically was thrown in there. It's like a salute as well from Kingda Ka to the Lakehurst Naval Station nearby SFGADV that does develop those launching systems.

I really am interested now in the Maglev technology. The US should tinker with it. :sun:

I just finished watching it, and yes, I know it is about 5:30am - but even I have to work. It was interesting since the show itself was not specifically about coasters. But glad you guys to check it out whether it taught you anything new or not.

Even my namesake was featured in the segment. I think that was the only time the Batman side ran this year. :D

(Of course that's a shot of it running a few years ago.)

I felt like they should have mentioned a bit more about TTD as well, but maybe I'm partial (granted CP is not my home park either). That and/or I think they should have mentioned Xcelerator when speaking of developing the technology.

Not a bad show I have it replay TVed now converted to DVD
I already knew about the hydraulics but the animation was good for the average Joe to understand. TTD was shown but as of today it is NOT the fastest in the world if they did the show last year then yes. And yes bring more MAGLEVS here.
Overall a good show now they need to do a show just on new coasters and new coaster technology

enjoy

The six flags engineer did not seem very knowledgable. Also i am getting tired of seeing that bald guy with the earring on. The one that wrote some kind of book. He's like paul reuben and says that every coaster is the best, lol.

Also there are 8 hydraulic tanks pressuring 500hp each. That would equal 4000 hp and not no 21000 hp,lol.

I broke my finger playing b-ball like 30 mins before the show, so I did not get to watch.

well i seriously doubt ever goin 600+ miles per hour in a coaster, it was the extremely brief brake run that caused the man's tempoariy blindness etc, he pulled 41Gs forward when he stopped, while i dont know the speed of which space shuttles take off, i believe it only pulls 7-8 Gs so, you never know how fast we might get, as long as we have a BIG'ol brake run

YoungStud TTD has 10000 hp i would think KK would have to have alot more to make it faster. I didnt get to see the show because i dont have cable. But i think one of my freinds recorded it so i will watch it.

It was a good 8-10 minutes devoted to Kingda Ka on TV and that's remarkable accounting for it being a documentary section devoted to a single ride. See, this is part of the reason why record breakers are still built - they generate a lot of attention and free press which in turn is basically advertising to millions of viewers without paying a cent. So whoever thought Kingda Ka was a dumb move on Six Flags' behalf should put their feet in their mouths. And don't give me that Six Flags is "in debt" crap, because a select few of their parks including Great Adventure have heavy cash flow, which allows them to splurge on massive capital investments.

Shuttles don't exceed 4G on launch.

Yes TTD has a 10000 hp motor, it is not used to its fullest cause it was a prototype. I have heard that ka's in the 7000hp range.

Cedar Fair still did pretty good with its airtime. Corkscrew was mentioned for it's role in the beginning and got a partial POV. MF and TTD shots made for the additional time.
