| What do B&M actually do?!
Just been searching around RCDB and for the 1st time noticed that B&M don't actually do a great deal with coasters! Example, Ingenieur Büro Stengel GmbH do the design work Local contractors seem to actually put the rides together Giovanola do the track work for at least Europe (some other place does it for America I think) Consign AG and Allen Bradley do the electrical stuff! All I can see they do is act as a middle man just to take cash! I am just trying to expand my website with details of these companies and never noticed it before! |

They actually design the ride, like make sure all the G's and all that good stuff is safe and fun for a ride. They don't have a steel plant along with a bunch of electricians that work for B&M that go out and build there new ride. Its like that A380 airplane, the a380 company actually designed the thing and then they get people from all over the world to make parts for there new plane.

They also come up with the concepts for the ride. Stengel and his team did not come up with the inverted coaster design, B&M did.

Clermont Steel Fabricators in Batavia, Ohio does the US track work. Example: http://donald.extremepki.com/gallery/thumbnails.php?album=20 |

Here is a related example. An architect designs a building. The architect does not make the materials or build the building. They have contractors and other organizations do that for them. B&M is a design corporation, not a construction one.

They design the track and trains themselves, and come up with the layout for any new coaster they're debuting.

I sort of get it - so when it says designed by Strengel, what does that mean, I presume where it is going to be going - where the supports and foundations need to be? Also, is the track made in the US exactly the same as the European version or are the slight differences? Last edited by meames; 10-13-2005 at 05:14 PM. |

B&M are Consulting Engineers. They design or draw a ride on paper and do all the calculations to make a ride rideable and to make all the heights work for the footers and supports. They then hire somebody to build the pieces of steel or fabricat the design from paper to steel material (such as the company in Ohio that makes US B&M track and supports). Then it is delivered to the park where an erection company puts the peices together at the site. Basically B&M are the designers and the rest is all contracted companies that perform the work for B&M under contract. I dont know how the contracts are set up or if B&M are just hired to draw the rides and get the parts fabricated and deliverd to the park Then the parks hire there own erection companies. Or if the whole ride is a package deal where B&M supplies everything. Some manufactures of rides are done (in house) as Mack and Zamperla do design and engineering of the rides and they also manufacture the rides at there facilities by there own people. Same as S&S Power design and actually build there rides out at the S&S factory. Even Morgan if you have seen the Discorvery Channel special on SD2000. Morgan designed the ride, and built the parts for the ride. B&M just draw them and calculate that a particular ride design will work. /\ When it says designed by " who ever " it just means that person came up with idea or worked with an idea to make it a reality on paper along with making the ride rideable by using calculations in engineering to make the ride work properly. Then its up to what ever company to make the peices. Hope this makes some sense. J
