SOB closed.

I was told that Son Of Beast at PKI has been closed since the park reopened this month for Fear Fest. I guess they are going to try and retrack it again for next season. Does anyone here think this will help or is it a lost cause?

I'd be surprised if it is retracked. They probably just chose it as one of the attractions to close and make it easier on the park. Most parks do close attractions down for their "fright"time.

I think I heard they were going to paint it in gasoline and then light fireworks dangerously close to it. That's what I hope anyway.

Too bad that such an awesome idea has turned out this way. :( I'd still like to ride it sometime in my life. I never thought there would be a looping woodie.

I take from those comments that it isn't too good :p

Oh well, I still want to ride it - it features on the TV over here a lot.

Oh man.. Im all for the SOB Fire show.... The ride is a POS and can never be good. Even if the ride was retracked and ran smooth... The layout still isnt even good...

They should have Intamin re-track it :D

I wouldn't mind if they burned it. Its so rough im surprised they don't have first aid sitting there the whole day.

Do an Intamin retrack or burn it after 2007.

But even with new track.. I dont think the ride would be that good. The layout itself wasnt good. No airtime and 4 helixs...

Your right.
The transition from track to the loop and back to the track (wood-steel-wood) is rough.

The first monstrous double helix following the first drop was easily one of the most drammatic (although also painful) elements I've ever experienced on a coaster.

I honestly didn't think it was THAT bad back when I rode in 2002, but I dunno that was 3 years ago and things change drastically...

I agre with James. Even if it was smooth and all the layout is too "wide" and drawn out. But it was a good concept....

I rode it summer 04 and I didn't think it was that bad of a coaster. I rode second car to the front, maybe it is a lot rougher in other areas of the train.

I also think the layout looks a bit boring but what if you put PTC trains on it instead of Primiere? How much do you guys think that would help it?

^ It wouldn't. The coaster is horrible in just about every way, with only one exception- the loop. Everything else about it is bad. The trains, the roughness, the pain, the incredibly boring layout, etc.

There are rumours that PKI will get rid of a major ride in the near future.... I pray it's SOB.

And yes, it would make an exellent fireworks show if it was burned. I would go to PKI just for that.

I have never rode it, but everyone says how bad it is. I hope they don't remove it, I plan on going next year, I want to ride it no matter how bad it is, and I'm sure it cost a lot of money. I don't think they will take it out soon. Do they still have that arrow looper there with like 6 inversions? I think thats the next to go if they remove a roller coaster. I liked the standup one, but they got rid of that. I havn't been there sence like 01 so I don't know all the names.

How come you didn't ride it in 2001 since you were there? I see you're 13, were you too small at the time? I wouldn't worry about riding it, it really is that bad. Although since you're only 13, you might not be that tall or big yet and it might not be as bad for you. If you're 5'10" and over and especially over 6', the worse it'll be.

I was actually scared of things with a loop, and I did get on the standup one eveuntally. I'm about 5'8 and 160 lbs, would it be rough on me? I did see the layout and I agree, it looks boring. I really want to ride it, and go back to PKI to ride everything I was scared crapless to ride before, and SOB was one of those rides...

Yes...do that and you're left with 3 woodies, one under construction and 2 in German and Sweden. ;)

Eh-hem. You MUST be joking.

Intamin woodies, I'm sure, are great. But never would that justify burning down all other woodies.

And all woodies aren't painful. Plus, you gotta distinguish between roughness and character. Clearly SOB is pure roughness. At my homepark (SFoG) we have Great American Scream Machine and Georgia Cyclone ... both of which are far from smooth, but deliver awesome ride experiences. Georgia Cyclone is just plain insane. Second drop is frickin' awesome.

As for SOB, just tear it down, don't burn it, and send the wood to SFoG where GCI can use it to build a quality coaster to compete with Thunderhead at Dollywood. Yeah! That's what I'm talkin about.

^ You defInitely didn't make an A in spelling class. God, I hate people that can't decently make a sentence!

And pardon me for using a park I'm most familiar with.

Now, go read some of the rest of my posts and see if you really think I'm a fanboy.

Smartest thing ever said on these boards.

5/26/00; objectively one the crappiest wood coasters ever designed
and built is legally able to run for the public. Once again, it's
proven that there's no domain for giant wood coasters

And . . less than one year later Intamin breaks all those rules with factory assembled track, Colossos shoots to the top of many enthusiast polls. And we look at SOB, we look at Germany, and we call PKI management SOB's. You know, in the amusement industry, it's ok to mess up a little, a single misjudgement won't break a park, there's always room for redemption. But to screw up like PKI did in 2000, you really need to show up, that takes true effort. And in light of Tomb Raider, Italian Job, not the worst move ever, but I keep getting notions of Skull Mountain SFGAdv running through my mind, I think PKI ought to consult with a few coaster clubs before they make a move. Anyone think Legend at HW is good?? And that's why.

They should take the track and use to build a woodie that doesn't have a loop and is less then 160 feet tall.

Does anyone else here realize that the pre-fab woodies are not the only ones Intamin makes. There would be more then 3 left if all non-Intamins were burned down.
