| Are hyper coasters really that great?
Many people praise hyper coasters and claim its one of the best coaster types if not the best in the world. What do you guys who have already rode one honestly think? Seems to me its just like another wooden who doesnt go upside down and is fast. Also which Hyper maker do you think is the best? B & M, Intamin, Morgan, Arrow or Giovonola?

Vampire you're in Canada aren't you; devoid of Hypercoasters? Soon you shall drink of the cup and have the knowledge. Morgan and B&M I prefer for the hypercoasters.

Hypercoasters are my personal favorite because of the height and speed. Inversions just do not impress me. Going upside down is not nearly as thrilling as plummeting at the earth, massive airtime, and huge overbanked turns.

I have been on hypercoasters of four different manufactures. (Arrow Dyamics) Magnum XL-200, Desperado; (Giovanola) Goliath; (Togo) Manhattan Express* (Intamin AG) Millennium Force**. The Arrow hypercoasters are more about airtime and tend to be more rugged. The Giovonalas are smooth, powerful, and very heavy on positive G-forces. Intamins tend to be very fast and produce a good mixture of both sides of the G-force scale. Vampiredabeast, I would assume you've never been on one before. ;) You won't know until you've been on one. Then you'll know whether or not they are "really that great." I'm sure you won't be disappointed...unless you ride Desperado. That one is a piece of crap. * Not considered a traditional hypercoaster by many, but still has all the requirements to be considered one. ** Many will argue it's a "Giga-coaster." Whatever. It's just a term coined by Cedar Point and Intamin for a hypercoaster that's over 300-feet tall. Last edited by Chris L; 10-25-2005 at 12:15 AM. |

Intamin is by far the best designer of hyper coasters, followed by B&m. Superman at Six Flags New England is the most amazing ride ever... the airtime is sustained and extremely powerful, plus it provides a relatively smooth ride with lots of lats, ejector air and direction changes in the ending, and huge ejector airtime in the first half. I've also been on SROS SFA and Millennium Force (plus a handful of other Intamins that aren't traditional hypers, like TTD, KK, WT, and S:UE), and can't wait until El Toro opens, since that should provide an experience similar to that of Intamin's megas. I'm not impressed at all with Morgan...Steel Force is decent at best. The floater airtime isn't sustained, pacing isn't anything special at all (other than the fun helix) and there's nothing that really stands out about it. The drop is the worst hyper-coaster drop I've been on (and I'm sure almost all morgan hyper drops are shaped like that). Of the four B&M hypers, I've been on Apollo's Chariot, Nitro, and Raging Bull. Each is pretty awesome, though not nearly as good as something like SROS SFNE or EGF. Apollo is definately the best of the three I've been on, since it has 4 different surprises along the track, some nice ejector airtime, and great floater too. Nitro is full of sustained floater airtime, and is a lot of fun (plus it has a really cool helix) and Raging Bull has a killer first drop-though not quite as good as AC's- and some fun turns, with a sprinkling of perfect floater airtime here and there. The only other traditional hyper I've been on is Magnum, and it's not that great of a ride. It was too rough to enjoy in spots, and that turnaround was pretty terrible because it was slow, boring, overbanked (and overbraked) and rough. The bunny hops on the return run are fun though.

I have been on most of the different types of hypers: Intamin-Melinnium Force Giaovonola-Goliath Arrow-Magnum Togo-Manhattan Express of pain B&M- Raging Bull/Apollo's Charriot In my opinion, I like B&M the most because Apollo has insane airtime, and has definitely aged really well. It was surprisingly smooth (i rode it on thurs.), and amazing in the front and back. Giovonola is second best, as I love Goliath (SFMM is my home park), but if I'd been on more Intamins' they'd probably be replacing one of those two. Arrow was ok, but it was kind of painful. And Togo, well, I'd prefer not to go there...

6/10 of the coasters in my top 10 steel list are hypercoasters, including the top 3. I guess that speaks for my thoughts on hypercoasters :)

Well the hyper coaster has certainly proved to be a worthy $8 million + investement for many parks, except that Son of Beast, but I'm assuming when you speak of a hyper coaster you don't simply mean a coaster over 200 ft tall, that's plain ignorant. B&M and Intamin really tore up the scene in 1999 with their debuts, all 3 coasters smashing top 10 lists. 2000-2001, more of the same good stuff, and not to mention Millennium at CP, possibly one day will be one of the most important developments in steel roller coaster history, just behind the most important, Magnum XL. To sum it up, hyper coasters aren't good, not just great, they are necessary.
Many people praise hyper coasters and claim its one of the best coaster types if not the best in the world. What do you guys who have already rode one honestly think?
honestly? well, honestly people say they are the best because they are the best. i've been on three hypercoasters (plus manhattan express but that is NOT a hypercoaster). nitro, raging bull, and steel force. nitro is amazing. simply the best all around coaster i have been on. the thing that really puts B&M hypers over others is the trains. i dont think people that have not been on a B&M hyper train realizes how much of a difference it makes. on other coasters, you can put your arms up for a more "out-of-control" experience. on B&Ms, you can put your legs straight out and it makes the experience that much better. raging bull isnt nearly as good as nitro but still a good ride. then theres steel force. steel force sucks. imo its one of the worst designed rides i have been on.

I thought Steel Force was fun... then Nitro was built. I'll ride it, but Nitro spoiled me so much, I don't even feel airtime on SF anymore except for the bunny hills. Better turns, better helix, better hills, the air is better in Jersey, I'll just take Nitro please. Hypers are amazing because it's an old school coaster with a new school twist. Where the woodies gave you amazing air, the hypers do that too. But, where the woodies give you lats, the hypers give you insane turns. The crazy, out of control feeling lives on in a different way. The incredible speeds and ferocious pacing are what give hypers their place in the world. It takes you high, it throws you around, and it spine you around

Hypers are fun but not the most exciting coaters. I have only been on a limited number of them (about 5) and i have really enjoyed all of them.

God you people need to hit Kennywood for Phantom's Revenge. Most people rank it number 2 right behind Superman Ride Of Steel in New England. This coaster has more air then Millenium Force. I don't know, I won't ride intamins. I hate the company. But i have ridden AC, Magnum, and a few others that I can't think of off the top of my head. But, Phantom is better then Maggie, period. Katie

I've been only on Millennium Force and Magnum XL and I think that hypers are really the best type of coasters ever. I like coasters with inversions too but I think that hypers are better. |

I love hypers. I love inverts as well. I rank those 2 pretty much equally. I have been on Morgan, B&M, Arrow and Intamin Hypers, and I love them all alot. 3 of my top 5 coasters are hypers, MF, Phantoms Revenge and Magnum.

Hypers (or the junoir/bigger versions of them) make up most of my top 10 list. Some of these are: Goliath (Intamin) MF (Intamin) Apollo's Chariot (B&M) Magnum (Arrow) Desperado (Arrow-sucky) Speed (Premier-awesomely smooth and fast, but a bit short) Manhattan Express (Togo-decent ride in the front) Intamin is my favorite hyper manufacturer, with B&M in a close 2nd (followed by Arrow, then Premier, then Togo). You just can't touch the killer air that Goliath provides.

I have been on a whopping 1 hyper coaster, and it is my second favorite coaster behind Volcano. Apollo's Chariot has a great drop and amazing airtime, especially on the last hill. And CoastinKatie, why do you hate Intamin so much won't you ride their coasters. Their hypers look amazing. I wish their was one in Florida.

I loved Speed, as like willski said, it's extremely smooth and just awesome. In the front row, when you're traveling at 70MPH along the Strip and all the famous landmarks, it just feels great. Plus, being kicked 220 feet up in the sky is just amazing, a great view, especially at night. Silver Star was awesome, but I think the restraints are a little overrated. Sure, they give you lots of freedom and their comfortable, but I thought that they were kind of bulk and just plain ugly. But, even when you're stapled, you get tons of air. |

is speed technically a hyper coaster? isnt it just a shuttle? my favorite hyper is MF, that drop... OMFG. just undescribable. espically in the back, getting whipped over the top. apollo is definitely a great one too. my brother started screaming on the predrop then realized we were moving straight. he started laughing then it dropped down and he screamed even louder. fun times...

^It can be considered a hyper coaster because it is over 200 feet tall. Apollo's Chariot is considered a hyper and it is only 170 feet tall, but I guess that is because the drop is over 200.

Coasters I have ridden that can be considered hyper coasters (I'm putting MF in there too): MF S:RoS at SFNE Nitro Steel Force AC Magnum Manhatten Express To keep it short and sweet, hyper coasters are the best. Full of airtime, height, speed, and intensity. The best one is S:RoS at SFNE, simply breathtaking. On the same note, Intamin is the best hyper coaster designers. Most of their designs incorperate insane amounts of ejector airtime and intensity. And when the coaster doesn't have much airtime (like MF or S:RoS SFDL/SFA) they make sure you feel the raw speed and sometimes height. B&M is right behind them, with amazing floater airtime, smoothness, and awesome trains.
I really gotta ask why, because Expedition Geforce, Superman SFNE, and MF consistently make the top 3.
Well I don't have a very high opinion of Intamin due to one thing. Cedar Point. I will not go into detail on how I feel because my opinion I don't feel like justifying it. It's not that I hate the company. I don't like the restraints, and GeForce doesn't rank high over here due to not many Americans riding it. I have heard good and bad things about S:RoS and MF, but I choose not to ride them. It is my opinion, and I can dislike or hate any company I choose. Just like people don't like Beemers. They have their opinion and I have mine.

Intamin is by far the best. They made MF, but I'll be riding my first B&M hyper in 2007. (I know SheiKra is a Dive Machine but if it lifts and/or drops 200 feet it is by definition a hyper coaster) So for all I know my opinion on hypers may change in only 2 years. Hypers are really worth it. They pull of amazing speed, great airtime, and a great view. In my top 5 steel coasters, 3 are hypers.

B&M hyper coasters are amazing, as are the Intamin variety. Magnum's an awesome ride in my opinion as well. So yes, hyper coasters are that good.
