Roller Coaster T.V Show 10-25-05

Just a heads up. The History Channel will be airing Mega Structures: The Ultimate Roller Coaster, tonight at 8pm. It will feature Kingda Ka and I am sure other coasters.

Quote from www.Gainsider.com

After browsing through the National Geographic website looking for times, I discovered that the Megastructures: Ultimate Roller Coaster (featuring Kingda Ka) will first air on 11/9 at 1am! Then it will be on 11/13 at 4pm, and 11/15 at 6pm.

This is special to us because our pictures should be included on the program!

UPDATE: The first showing of this special is actually Tuesday, 10/25, at 8PM! Earlier (and a better time) than we had thought!

“MEGASTRUCTURES: ULTIMATE ROLLER COASTER”
TO AIR ON NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC CHANNEL

SAN RAFAEL, CA – Kingda Ka is the tallest, fastest roller coaster in the world. Located in Jackson, New Jersey, at Six Flags Great Adventure the coaster stands at 456 feet -- soaring a staggering 45 stories in the air. It launches riders 128 miles per hour in less than four seconds, shooting them up a 90-degree incline and then down a corkscrew. All this jam-packed into a 50-second thrill ride like no other. In this episode of MegaStructures: ULTIMATE ROLLER COASTER, find out how workers overcome some of the most difficult engineering and weather challenges to design and construct the world record-breaking ride. Plus, just days before the launching of the coaster, engineers discover mechanical trouble. Will engineers be forced to alter the entire ride? Find out if Kingda Ka can be built in time for the busy summer season – or if the world-record megastructure will have to delay the grand opening.

Producers at Indigo Films were granted exclusive access during the entire construction process. Meet engineers Jeff Glinter, Larry Chickola and others who guided the project from start to finish in this episode of MegaStructures: ULTIMATE ROLLER COASTER, airing at 10 p.m. on Tuesday, October 25, 2005, on the NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC CHANNEL. For actual times, please check out www.nationalgeographic.com/channel/

I saw this thread and just want to say I thought...
In the Loop and PCast is great and all, but the next roller coaster website that could get a short film each week about roller coaster news, and perhaps video of current events, and/or roller coasters themselves, could really take control of internet enthusiasts.

It's not only digital cable. I'm on basic and my basic cable includes it.

As others have said, you need to check your local listings to see 1. If you get the National Geographic Channel, and if you do, then 2. What channel it is.

On mine it's channel 71, but it's not likely to be the same channel for you.

When DVRing it, would it be possible to send the video to those without National Geographic channel? I'm interested in seeing it, but I don't have that channel.

Apparently at the beginning of the show they said that the 129 foot tall camelback was orginally planned to be an 85 foot hill, then it dipped down about 20 to 30 feet, then went back up to over 100 feet, then dropped the whole way. ( I have no idea what the real heights were, I am just doing guesswork on about 5 seconds of footage, and they didn't tell us) Personally I think that would have had alot better airtime than the hill that now stands, because the tops were not as gradual.

There were a few errors in the show. They were making the claim about S:TE at SFMM. Meanwhile...they showed video of S:UF.

There was another error which I can't recall right now. The research could have been a little tighter.

Otherwise, it was very enjoyable.

I had my friend tape it because I don't get NGC. I can't wait to see it. It sounds like it was great.

Yeah....the truth was finally revealed as to why it did not open on the original April 23rd opening day.

I taped it. I'll find the second error. Not like I don't have anything else to do.

On a related note....whatever happened to the Extreme Rides Series that aired every year on Memorial Day? I wish they would bring those back.

I didn't watch or even know if I get the channel since I'm not at home now. I hope I do since it seems coaster shows are few and far between now. I'm glad to hear the show was good.

The only thing that bothers me is the fact that I guess they made some errors as most of these coaster and park shows do. I know some will say it's because they're not experts or enthusiasts. That may be true but they are journalists and they should get information correct. It's not that hard since there are plenty of places they can turn to for info. And here's an idea for them-how about when they're actually at the park filming, they grab a pen and notebook and write some basic information of the ride. It wouldn't really be that difficult to do.

Guys...it is being repeated at 11:00 P.M. tonight, so set your Tivo or VCR to grab it. It airs again on October 30th.

http://channel.nationalgeographic.com/channel/

It was done well...just some minor errors. Truths were revealed. All of you will definitely enjoy it.

It's not a bad show. I don't think it's the best coaster show made by any means, but it was pretty good. Fun to watch and informative. The minor errors really didn't bug me that much because outside of the coaster geeks around, most people wouldn't know.

What irritated me was all the hyperbolic disasters that could befall them. "If this piece doesn't work, the season is ruined." "If the chamber is damaged, it's all lost since it can't be replaced." Etc, etc. That just got real annoying really quick, since obviously if it had any of the problems they mentioned, they wouldn't be showing the show. dur.

My friend taped it for me and I am going to watch it. He said it was really good. He also said that it was very dramatic as Willow said. For instance, "Could they fix the problem and get the ride open in time? Or will the ride have to be taken down for good?" I'll go watch it now.

EDIT: ok, I watched it. It was very good. It showed lots of different angles of every part of the ride. I liked seeing the pullthrough. I have alot to say about it but can't put into words. Overall, good job National Geographic channel.

It was pretty interesting for sure. They were definetely over dramatic, as others have said. However, it was interesting to watch them building the monster from day 1. I didn't realize that the engine and launch took so much calibrating; I assumed with how few rollbacks KK has that power was never a problem on the ride.
