arrows that have aged well

I was wondering What are some of arrow dynamics coasters that have aged well? All i seem to hear about them is how painful they are. But I went on the demon at PGA and it is fairly smooth. The only rough part was the turnaround. What do all you think?

All Arrow coasters? You might only be speaking about Arrow loopers. Suspended coasters like Top Gun PKI, Vortex PCaW, and Big Bad Wolf are still great rides. In terms of loopers, Vortex at PKI has aged pretty well, it seems like some years are better than others with that one. The thing with the loopers is how they were designed. The track layout is engineered using the cars as the center of gravity, while it ought to have been closer to the riders' heartline. Arrow's technique worked moderately well with simple looping coasters but it wasn't as effective with large scale coasters like Great American Scream Machine SFGAdv, Steel Phantom KW, or Shockwave SFGAm, and Drachen Fire was a nightmare.
Arrow's last complex looping design, Tennessee Tornado might fair better in the future. I don't know for a fact, but that coaster feels like it was engineered better. The pullout of the sidewinder feels much different than say the second half of the bowtie element on Dragon Mountain.

Runaway Mine Train at SFoT has aged well. It's not a looper but it's an Arrow.

An arrow looper? Hmmmmm

Tennesse Tornado and Python. Those things were built the right way! ;-)

I think Carolina Cyclone has aged very well and still gives a great ride.

I have never had a problem with Arrow Loopers really, but I think as far as the mega loopers go, Viper at SFMM delivers an excellent ride. It is pretty fast paced, but the layout does not involve any harsh transitions so it is not rough at all IMO. Others may have had different exeriences, but for how rough some can be, for Viper's size it is amazingly smooth.

Well, the only Arrow Loopers I rode are CP's Corkscrew and SFDL's Viper. Corkscrew aged quite well, and wasn't painful, just kind of bouncy. Viper was also pretty smooth on most parts. The only parts of Viper I complain about are the Sidewinder/batwing and the Corkscrews. Those hurt like crazy!

I second this motion. Carolina Cyclone is now as smooth as a B&M. Carolina Cyclone is actually smoother than Vortex, Carowinds' B&M standup. It is almost as smooth as Top Gun, the park's invert.

The cyclone wins this thread easily.

Out of the ones I have ridden:

BBW, Lochness Monster, and Canyon Blaster at Circus Circus have aged the best.

Agreed, I had totally forgotten about Canyon Blaster, it blew me away and I got off the coaster thinking "THIS is arrow?!"

/\ Exactly my thoughts. Canyon Blaster is well over 10 years old and it is among the smoothest "old school" Arrow loopers I have ever been on - and one of the most fun to boot.

Magic Mountain's 16 year old Viper has also aged very well, considering its size for a looping coaster back in 1990 was pretty big.

I'd have to say Dragon Fire at PCW
Never really give a rough ride.

I dont think many ever started well. I guess Thunderation at Silver Dollar City because that one is fun and old as well. Python at BGT is always fun too. Orient Express was my favorite though, but was rough.

Not really fair since its only 7 years old.
and Python. Those things were built the right way! ;-)
LOL I thought Python was the biggest piece of crap out there. Currently my least favorite coaster for its slowness, boring layout and horribly rough corkscrews.
I second this motion. Carolina Cyclone is now as smooth as a B&M.
It's never given me a smooth ride, and I think that Vortex isn't THAT bad.

It's given me rough rides. I can't believe I was dumb enough to re-ride it

Nessie wins this award for me, its a great ride. Even Viper at Magic Mountain and Anaconda at Kings dominion were pretty good rides in my book.

Ah! Thunderation! AWESOME ride. Rough enough to be wild, but not what I would actually call rough. Mostly smooth ride, GREAT speed, (I am guessing it is the fastest mine train coaster on Earth. What are some other fast ones?), and great use of terrain. I think that Cedar Creek Mine Ride at CP is also incredibly smooth. It still has the old school trains and is WAY smoother than Runaway Mine Train at SFOT. Very dull ride, but the smoothest mine train I think I have ever ridden. Just to mention it, though it is kind of rough, I love Adventure Express at PKI.

I guess I have a bigger tolerance for pain (remember, I like Manhattan Express) and I have to say I enjoy CP's Corkscrew, and the very smooth Canyon Blaster. Not to forget Viper at SFMM and I liked X too. All the mine train coasters I've been on were smooth (but some had horrid transitions) so I guess they're all ok...

Call me crazy, but I think that Double Loop at Geauga Lake gives a good ride. Probably because the layout is too small and simple to cause much damage! But check this - it's a tradition with the folks I go to parks with to rank the coasters after the trip, and compare our lists on the ride home. Last time we were at Geauga Lake, 3 out of 4 of us ranked Double Loop higher than Villain. (The dissenting vote was me, BTW. I don't care for Villain's trains, but loooove the speed.)

Other good ones are the BGW coasters, of course. And the mine trains, aside from some really awkward track in the earlier ones (but that doesn't count, because that's a fault of the original design, not of poor aging). The king of the mine trains, Gemini, is still as smooth as anything anywhere.

Loch Ness Monster is excellent. So it Tennessee Tornado and Viper at SFMM.

Gotta reference BobFunLand- I'm guessing that you haven't been on very many of the original corkscrew coasters since you consider them to be boring. Python is a standard clone of the very first inverting coaster ever built- it most certainly wasn't considered boring at the time it was built, and really only is when compared to our modern deals- especially what's sitting in the same park, and that's not a fair comparison. Otherwise it's pretty typical for a corkscrew, and really isn't that bad.

A good suggestion if you think Arrow corkscrews are painful- put your head back against the headrest, and then to the left so it's against the otsr. That'll eliminate most of the head banging on the corkscrew portion. Works on some SLC's too. :)

I havn't been on too many, but I would say that Dragon Fire at PCW has aged quite well considering some of weather it has to put up with each year.
Except for the entrance to the first corkscrew and the bottom of the drop off of the MCBR it is exceptionally smooth and solid feeling.
You must have not ridden the cyclone lately.
I last rode on opening day this year.

I don't think Vortex is as rough as its made out to be, but it just didn't pack the same punch as, say, Scorcher. But those are B&Ms.. wrong thread!

I've been on two Arrow Corkscrews, assuming you aren't counting the custom ones like Cedar Point's, for example. Call me a product of the 90s coaster boom, but it has an uninspiring layout. Sure, I know it was popular back in the early 80s (my Dad remembered riding it back when it was new) but with a kickass coaster like Kumba next door, it just makes it even more lame. Heck, the one at Myrtle didn't have much competition, and it still sucked.

Loch Ness is good for a coaster in the 70's, but your head bangs up and down a lot at the end of the first loop.
