| Trick Track - What does it look like?
While at Carowinds for Winterfest I was talking to someone about a woody that had trick track. Does anyone have a pic of what it looks like on a coaster? I've never seen one like that had it and rcdb.com didn't have any pictures of trick track. Thanks

It basically means when the track of a coaster is banked to one side for no apparent reason;

It's basically a piece of straight track that banks one way then banks the other. Traver was notorious for them. Big Thunder Mountain also has one.

There is quite a lot of trick track on Mantis, and you can usually find some on woodies. You can also look for pics of the Crystal Beach Cyclone by Traver. That thing has a nasty bit of trick track.

Mantis doesn't have any trick track, just quick transitions. Shivering Timbers has a left-then-right trick track, and there are a lot of other coasters that have one-sided trick track. They're usually found on wooden coasters, however I believe the standup at Kings Dominion has a trick track (as seen in picture above).

I believe the section before the final, or next to last turn has some trick track on Mantis, though it could just be a wide turn.

The Villian has a rough section of trick track at the bottom of one of its taller hills...kills me every time.

Now that we're off topic... after the inclined loop you curve to the left then snap back over to the right and turn up to the mcbr. From there you drop into the corkscrew and climb into a left turn for about 235 degress then snap over to the right for a ~270 deg turn under that snap then climb into a left turn over the track of the 2nd half of the prev left then bank to the right to climb to the brakes. :) You should know better than to doubt my memory of CP's coaster layouts. ;)

If Mantis has a trick track then y'all are using the term far too loosely. The idea was to maneuver through the element at high speeds causing the riders to terrifyingly be tossed from side to side. Traver was the best known user, though some of the aforementioned CCIs also deploy Trick Tracks. That's about as good as I can come up with. Kieth did that a while back, and even though its not totally accurate its the best I could do. There are some old Crystal Beach cyclone photos out there, I just couldn't find any. I have a ** history book but didn't feel like scanning its photo (not to mention that would be illegal ;)) |

About Mantis, B&M fully heartlines their coasters and a trick-track can hardly be heartlined and still have meaning. What your thinking of is just quick directional changes.

You know on the bottom of the first drop on the cannonball the track does a slight turn down the entire hill then at the very bottom as the track levels out there is a slight banking to the left and then back to a flat position then it goes up the next hill. well that is trick track. John Allen invented it! Last edited by cannonballer; 12-03-2005 at 04:00 AM. |

^Traver was way before John Allen my friend. I hope you were kidding. I thought that Traver's trick track also had some hills to it though. Along with the banking and zig-zags, I thought there was up and down motion. It looks like it would throw you every way possible. It just looked so brutal and unbelievable. I have photos in books.

I happen to know that Shivering Timbers at Michigan's Adventure has a trick track on the way back to the station. I saw this on one of the coaster shows on the Discovery Channel a few years back.

You got me Mav. Well at least the question "Does Mantis have this element created by Traver?" didn't come up in the CP Jeporday game on PX. ;) Hmmm...Does Voyage have any, or are those just quick transitions as well?

Big Thunder Mountain railroad definitely has one. I use it as an opportunity to slam into my friend. I remember Timbers having one as well, on the return trip, as everyone has stated. That picture isn't of a ride at Paramount's Kings Dominion. Maybe its the stand-up that was at Kings Island. Shockwave most definitely does NOT have a trick track. That'd be way too painful.

Ok, I knew it wasnt King Cobra because the colors were wrong, and couldn't remember the colors of Shockwave. All I know is that TOGO=pain, trick-track or not.

Skyrider is not painful, at all.

I think Mummy's trick track adds to the ride, unlike other coasters.
Ok, I knew it wasnt King Cobra because the colors were wrong, and couldn't remember the colors of Shockwave. All I know is that TOGO=pain, trick-track or not.
It's not painful really. The trick-track is a nice effect near the fence. |
It's a clone of PKIs King Cobra, is it not? That ride hurt.
Yes it is. However, Pcw's version has very little vibrations and headbanging throughout the entire course. The only thing that hurts on the ride is if the rideop does not lower the seat thing low enough.

www.rcdb.com defines tricktrack as "A crooked section of track that was made famous in the 1920's by designer Harry Traver. http://rcdb.com/glossary210.htm. They only list Shivering Timbers and Villain as having tricktrack but there are many others with it.
