| Which coaster truly has the steepest drop?
Is there any full-circuit coaster out there that has a first drop steeper than 90° (almost like an inversion)? If so, lemme know people! I don't think 90° is the steepest designers will go. Currently, the steepest full-circuit coasters in the world are Hypersonic XLC and Dodonpa. Both TA2K's feature 90° drops.

I was gonna say Hypersonic, but you listed it. I heard the tilt coasters are slightly over 90 degrees but I haven't seen stats to prove it, until I do, I won't believe it.

1. Steepest non-launched coaster (shuttles): Oblivion (87.5°) 2. Steepest non-launched coaster (trains): Expedition GeForce (82°) 3. Steepestes launched coaster: Hypersonic XLC (90°) Record nr. 2 will soon be held by 'X', with a 88.5° drop. Last edited by Belgian; 08-08-2001 at 01:08 PM. |

yah thats what i was gona say Gravity max does seem to go 90 or more degrees... For normall coasters yes X takes the trophy and for shuttles lauched well S:TE should be included although its is only a 90 angle thats launched.....

There aren't any that are built that go steeper than 90 degrees, but the Giovanola tilt goes past 90 to ithink 110 or 100, but like i said that hasn't been built anywhere.

I think the tilt coaster goes to 98 degrees; or will do when a park builds one!

I imagine that a coaster with a drop over 90degrees would be pretty uncomfortable. As the drop would go underneath itself, you would slump into shoulder harness. Now if this was a "normal" horsecollar, then this could be very painful. If this drop was taken more than about 110 degrees, the G-Forces would be too great for people, and thay would black out. |

Are tilt coasters really meant to go over 90°? That's awesome! It seems pretty unsafe, but I'd like to ride one.

Actually, the drop on X is 88.5 degrees, but we won't notice 1.5 degrees off vertical. Shaft of Terror or whatever it's called at Gold Reef City has a completely vertical drop. 90 degrees and it isn't launched. It also isn't made by Giovanola. Check it out at rcdb.com. It looks truly terrifying! Don't forget Gravity Max, the world's first tilt coaster. It's built by Vekoma and it's at Discovery World in Tawain. I'm pretty sure it has a vertical drop.

Gravity Max, Shaft of Terror, Superman: The Escape, Tower of Terror, Hypersonic XLC and Dodonpa are currently the only coasters to feture 90 degree drops. Giovanola Tilt coasters can drop at 98 degrees, but none have been built. Coasters that come close include Oblivion, G5, X, Millennium Force, and TOGO Ultra Twisters. No other coasters have drops that are even in the 80's(curved drops not included).

It's pretty believable that Gravity Max's drop could be steeper than 90°. It seems like it. Anyway, a drop steeper than 90° would be great in a 4-D coaster.

GM doesnt even deserve the record for being "steepest non launched coaster" considering its not a full circuit technically glad someone didnt forget ToT :) |

if you think about it all coasters that have loops go more than vertical. at the top ends of the loop at goes up to 180 degrees.

Well the steepest for now I THINK (so don't insult me if i'm wrong) is hypersonic xlc at 90 deg. but i heard that gravity max (vekoma tilt) will beat that...
Originally posted by sfmm2004 what is a tilt coaster? any pix/drawings/layouts yet? any plans for near future construction? if so, where?
Discovery World in Taiwan has one under construction. It SHOULD be done by now, but I went last month and they looked pretty behind... This pic just shows the drop. At the top of the lift, the train is held onto that segment that's starting to drop. that segment will then connect with the track below, and away we go!

cool pic, but it doesn't look that tall. and it certainly doesn't look like it's 98 degrees (no pun intended) like i heard it would be.

From that angle it would be hard to spot 8 degrees off vertical. You're right about the height though, I thought it would be taller too.
